Broken LCD monitor? Cool lets fix it.
« on: June 22, 2009, 02:35:16 PM »
There was a "broken" LCD monitor at work today so I was like' "cool, new LCD for the price of 'fix this shit yourself'"

Only I have never done this before lol.

It is a HP L1906, the green LED [ON] indicator comes on when it is plugged in and turned on, however there is no display. Furthermore there is this quiet, kind of high frequency/pitch "hmmmmmmmmmm" noise that I hear when I plug it in. Like what you might hear from a TV.

Could this be a backlight and/or inverter problem? If so would the following guides help?

http://www.inventgeek.com/Projects/shorts/overview.aspx
http://www.instructables.com/id/Replace-LCD-Backlight-Inverter-on-Any-Monitor-for-/

Thanks

i love that price, that's my third favorite price after "Free" and "Cheap"

very good instructions...i had to trial and error my way through that crap the first time i did that.

as far as the monitor goes, the L1906 is a fairly decent monitor, especially for the cost of free...or damn near close to it. if your LED power indicator is working fine but you get no image, i would suspect an issue with the backlighting. i'm not too sure what to make of the noise you hear from it, but be careful with the replacement bulb if that's what you decide to do...those things are damn fragile...i've broken a ton of those...real easy to do.

i would suspect a backlighting issue, as if it weren't the power LED would not go green but stay an amber color to indicate power received but not turning on. those guides are fairly good guides that tell you what to do and everything, i approve of those guides.

Alright, I'll give it a shot.

Any recommendations for back lights?

Yeah, I think it got dropped one too many times or something, as the casing is really worn out of shape.

It turns on and off as you push on the bottom edges, particularly at the bottom and middle of it.

Edit:
Oh yeah, does it matter what color cathode kit you get?

You'll fix a broken monitor, but won't put in the effort to make yourself a stick, damnit Kirbeh :\

looking around a little bit online,
http://www.lcdparts.net/ccfldetail1.aspx?ProductCCFL=MS26385
is perhaps the best i could find for that particular size monitor.

To make a good stick takes a lot more effort than fixing an LCD. :psyduck:

Doesn't it just?

Speaking out of my ass, hum means something is drawing lots of power.  Look for magnets, transformers, or large components and check them for damage.  Turning on and off as you press the bottom makes me think something is loose or exposed, and that you're shorting it out when you press.  If you can, put up some pics for us all to see.

This video may not be a monitor, but i'm pretty sure you could apply the same technique.

Oh shit, the amateur technician in me is lmao. I don't know how plasma TVs work, but if that's all that is needed to fix them, I could easily make some money off this. I know a bunch of people with crap plasmas that have those same annoying lines on it and would just rather give the thing away.

I don't want to be held responsible for what ever comes of this. (unless its money, i'll take money)
