Now list down your rules,
Then we can start this game up.
However, you'll see...

I'm telling you now,
Since you guys started this, don't
Go crying later.

And while we're at it,

Enigma at work.

I'm so sorry sir
You will never win my game
I say, fuck your code

Word games are my thing
No one can compete with me
I wont allow it

We may not like it
But we must work together
Two bitter rivals

We need sets of rules
I cant think of them myself
I might need some help

I think well do it
Our differences aside
This thread will not stop

It will never end
never, ever, ever no
I say, it will not

And I must say this
I will see your five poems
And i'll raise you two
 :slowpoke:

: Re: Haiku Topic
: Dark Pulse April 10, 2010, 10:33:24 PM
You folks don't get it.
It's not the volume, it's the
quality that counts.

Now, I could school you
all day long on how to write
haiku, but no thanks.

See, speaking like this
takes some time and effort so
you had best get it.

But all you two are
focused on is "quantity!"
You both make me laugh.

It's not quantity.
It's quality. Always was.
Numbers are nothing.

Anyone can write
sheer numbers of haiku, but
it don't mean you should.

Frankly, that contest
makes it seem like you two have
nothing else to do.

It's saturday night.
You should be out partying
or playing Melty.

Instead, here you are
sitting at the PC and
thinking of dumb rhymes.

So as I close this,
facepalming my head at it,
I shall say one thing.

It is quality.
That is what always counts most,
Eleven aside.
: Re: Haiku Topic
: Kiiroe April 10, 2010, 11:55:57 PM
Well, I guess you win
This will  be my last haiku
I'll see you in hell

I must say farewell
I commend you my brother
I am at a loss

My life was so short
This sad life as a poet
I knew it would end

Im sad you are right
It IS about quality
I just didnt know

Yea im sitting here
I have no melty to play
No tv to watch

No close friends to call
No family to hang with
No bed to sleep in

This took a sad turn
It took a turn for the worst
Depression sets in

Sleep will be needed
A recollection of thoughts
One small chance to rest

But dont sit judging us
Dont get on your high horse just yet
You just wait and see

About quality
One day you will see defeat
You just sit and wait

Ill be showing you
We will all be showing you
You shall be prepared

Now ill take my leave
Sorry to bore you with this
Hope you stayed awake

I know well be friends
The man who knows his words well
The man with no fail

This has been so fun
But you need to remember
How I wrote fourteen
: Re: Haiku Topic
: ShinMasaki April 11, 2010, 12:12:14 AM
@Kiiroe

(judging from your first verse, you found my code. Good job, you get a +heat)

Your lines kinda suck.
Normal flow, control, style
Need to work on those.

You don't just add words
So you hit syllable count.
It makes them sound dumb.

Your line's poetic,
Make them flow like you're talking
And then try again.

@ Dark Pulse

As for quality,
Take a look at my last post
I am trash talking.

Typical for games,
Talk trash to your opponents
Then beat them senseless.

(did you find my hidden message in my last post? read it one more time)

That's what hype's about.
And if I wanted to rhyme,
Trust me, I've got time.

I spend my days off
Playing Touhou games mostly
or Evo training.

Of course anyone
Can write lines with metered verse,
It's not all that hard.

What should be looked at
Is if they sound natural
As if they're spoken.

Take this post of mine,
This would fit normally
In a paragraph.

You see the verses
Because I'm spacing the lines,
But say I didn't...

then it would end up looking much more like a post. Just like Loli said, "This shit is mad lame". You're not proving anything by quantity lines. It's rather doubtful that you could 'school me' on verse, please don't waste your time. I've gone to college and I've minored in English; my focus was prose. But what I wanted was to take some classes on creative writing. While they did have some, there were a lot of pre-reqs...I really hate those. English 120 was a real waste of my time and same with 212, and then they cancelled the creative writing class. I had to take prose.  :emo:

Now after all that, I've got myself a minor but it does nothing for my current job. I manage a sushi bar, schooling was useless; don't have a major and I stopped taking classes. Gen Ed classes suck. I do like to write, and prose is easy to do, and thus...my day off. After all my years, metered verses and haiku are easy to write. Oh, and FYI, metered verses and haiku are two different things. This thread is metered while haiku deals with seasons of nature and stuff. Oh, and just for fun, I made this entire post at 5-7-5. Break them up and see, I really don't care about quantity at all, but if you're counting then I have no idea how many I wrote.  :toot:

Oh, I go to college now, and I took a lot of classes in English. Including creative writing, and I've got the poetry, flash fiction, and short stories to prove it. I'm working on a Bachelor's degree now, and I think I have a fairly more verbose vocabulary than most people. Minors really don't mean jack once you have more than an Associate's Degree, anyway.

Does it mean I could school you? Maybe not; it was a bit presumptuous of me. But I'd say I got a good shot of being at least equal.

And yes, I know the distinction between metered verses and Haiku, but unarguably this thread has never been about Haikus, but metered verses. Not to mention "Metered Verses" being much harder to stuff in since that's four syllables.

Also, yes, I did find your hidden message. Very clever. To that, I have to say...

If that isn't hint enough, then I'll spell it out, but I think that should suffice. Since I always appreciate that +HEAT. :P

Anyway, I could try (and easily top) Kiiroe's 14, but I'm beyond caring. Plus the last thing this thread needs is posts that contain 30+ 5-7-5 metered verse posts. Let's keep them short, like 1-3 per post, kids. Reading those longer ones suck, to be honest.

I have writing to return to, anyway. One month has produced an 80,000 word, 2/3 complete fanfic. It might even show up here, sometime. As it is Melty/Tsuki related...

(http://www.meltybread.com/forums/akiha%27s-tea-room/haiku-topic/msg71131/#msg71131)  Shin's post was metered, even when he stopped spacing.  Yours seemed like plain talk.  If you're his equal, then you should be proving it.  Haiku at all times!

Ha! Nice to see that. I prefer Reimu B too, strong but not too fast. As it is, the only one I have cleared in full would be Touhou 6. Working on the rest, but it is taking some time, are you good at them? Touhous 6-8 are among the best Touhous, but 10 has Aya.

So, what do you mean by this thread being derailed? Look again closely. Loli has his post metered in 5-7-5, and then look at mine. Every single one of my posts within this thread are all metered too. The last one as well (except for the edit part) was metered correct. Same goes for this post, me and Loli are following the topic rules.

Would it be better
If I spaced out every line
In this format here?

As I was saying,
A true metered post is one
Where you sound normal.

Not unnatural
Nor awkward sounding either,
But everything flows.

Or would you rather
That I wrote a real haiku
Instead of lecture?

------

Nighttime, a full moon
Cold wind blows, the city sleeps
Dawn breaks, birds chirping

------

What's that? Too boring?
Well that was a REAL haiku
Not this metered talk.

Shut up faggots

Now back on topic

I agreed with him

But also notice,
it was a jab at myself.

I'm no lunatic, but I hard cleared 6-8.  This was in the past.  I haven't played since...probably one or two years?  My skills must have dulled.  Eleven's demo, I think, was the last I played.  It was good and bad.  I liked some of it (namely the sub characters), yet it still fell short.  The new engine's wack.  Ever since Mountain of Faith, I lost interest.  Sorry for Aya, but there's still Shoot the Bullet.  Double Spoiler, too.

Nighttime, a full moon
Cold wind blows, the city sleeps
Dawn breaks, birds chirping
Hey, where's all the leaves?  Sounds to me like you're a hack!  Go back to Type Moon.   :V

: Re: Haiku Topic

I've an idea,
How about we play a game
Using metered verse.

I will write a verse
Then the next person follows
Up with another.

But don't end your verse
With a sentence. It will go
Something like this.

: Anon2
: Anon1
: ShinMasaki
So I guess I'll start. I've got a really big question to ask. What is
a man? A miserable pile of secrets. But enough talk, have
This pokeball. This
Device will help you capture
Wild pokemon.

And thus Anon2
Broke this game by ending with
A sentence. That jerk.

You can space your lines
Or you can leave it open.
But follow the rules.

Your verse must still be
Metered in 5-7-5
And must end open.

Basically this game
Will keep on going until
We hit a moron.

What do you guys say,
Do you want to try this out?
Who wants to start this?

Sure, the game sounds fun, but someone could troll with ease.  What would you do then?  Ignore all "end" posts?

I'll stick to just conversing.  It's more fun to me.

By the way, you guys, calling him SM sounds weird like some bondage shit.  In that nickname thread, he mentioned something about being called just Shin.

Sry, was at work. I work almost everyday going 10 till 10 and the restaurant is full all the fricken' time...no time to write shit.

I was wondering who you were talking about with that SM name...I didn't realize that you were talking 'bout me. Feels kinda dirty...  :-\  Read the nickname thread (http://www.meltybread.com/forums/sacchin-toast/your-nickname's-origin/msg67201/#msg67201), the nickname I use is "Shin", so please call me that.  :blah:

I don't like my game, trolling is way too easy...let's do something else. I suggested that around 5 in the morning, I was damn tired...didn't think about the possibility that someone would troll it. I have to admit, if I knew this game was being played, I'd troll it. Heh, especially BECAUSE it is a word game, I'd be trolling it.

And, in other news, what the hell is the meaning of this screwed up count (http://www.meltybread.com/forums/akiha's-tea-room/haiku-topic/msg71204/#msg71204)? Your first line's a wreck. Go fix that shit up right now. I'm ashamed of you. :slowpoke:

It's just as you say. I wont make excuses, I wrote that purposely. Merely seventeen syllable count does not make a line a haiku; space each of the words as they should be. if the count is right, then you're good.

Well, I'll accept that.

No single syllable 'style' for me, I guess.

Okay, next subject - Touhou Pocket Wars Evo!  It's a doujin game based around Touhou (obviously) and plays like a card game (sort of).  I enjoy it so much that I have started to translate simple things.  Well, most of it is just inserting stuff that's seen prior translation.  The game is easy to code monkey around in, so I'm like, "why not?"  I would need major assistance to translate the main story's text though.  Honestly, I could care less about the story's mass of dialog.  I just want spellcard effect translations so I can play with ease, lol.

Yeah. Swahili, Traditional Chinese, and more of the usual stuff one can expect (German, French, Italian) but no Japanese. It sucks. I'd take it in a heartbeat.

I find it difficult to learn from tutes or CDs. That crucial human feedback is kind of lacking.

That said, I've heard a lot of people say good things about Rosetta Stone.

If you got any recommendations or anything, feel free to toss them my way.

Oh wow, Swahili?! WTF is up with that? You should teach yourself. Almost all of the Japanese that I have learned, I have taught myself.
Really? How'd you do that?

I couldn't say much on using Rosetta Stone. I've never used it. But for Japanese, I'd start with the alphabet, learn all the letters. Of course, that's basic. Here are two (http://www.freejapaneselessons.com/lesson02.cfm) sites (http://www.learn-japanese.info/) that I used when teaching myself. Install the Asia Language packs  (http://newton.uor.edu/Departments&Programs/AsianStudiesDept/Language/asianlanguageinstallation_XP.html)on your computers. That will help too.

There's a program called "Translator Aggregator" (http://www.hongfire.com/forum/attachment.php?s=48fe0ee4b653a4f8fbc5ddcf62f29e3e&attachmentid=159424&d=1271103151) that can help translate; and for copying kanji, you can always use the IME pad. The IME pad is a tool in the options of the language pack. This is "easy mode" for translating Japanese, works for everyone, however you should pay attention to all the translations. Using this will help by giving you valuable vocabulary. Use the sites above for learning grammatical usage correctly.

But this will only get you so far with learning, books will help the rest. You can also chat with Japanese speakers like penpals or something. A lot of people in Japan also want to learn English as well; there's a site I'm on, "Japan a Radio" (http://www.japanaradio.com/), where you can meet people. Well, by "meet", I mean finding people online that want to learn as well. You can chat via IM, email, whatever works the best for you. This helps cover the human feedback part you miss from using programs.

That's just one option. You don't have to join the site if you don't want to. You can find someone on most message boards that can speak a bit of it, but some translators are dicks and they wont bother to help you out at all. Simply chatting in another language will help, you don't have to talk.

Finally, there's one more way I'd like to mention. Manga translations. Translating manga (particularly children's) will help you learn words. The most important thing with Japanese is the vocabulary. The sentence structure is based entirely on using nouns and verbs.

I dunno...maybe the Rosetta Stone might be easier, but like I said, I have never used it before. I hear it works well.

I was wondering...
Where is your 5-7-5?
Haiku thread, people?

Basically, learning (5)
Japanese is about you (7)
wanting to learn it. (5)

If you have the drive (5)
teaching yourself is easy. (7)
It just takes some time. (5)

If you mispronounce your words, people will likely help you out with it. But given that there that there is no one you can speak to, learning to reads fine. If you take classes, they will likely focus on reading anyways.

But back to business...Loli, I want a copy of this Touhou game. I don't mind helping with the translations...I want danmaku lolis.
: Re: Haiku Topic
: Ice Queen Lotus April 16, 2010, 09:28:31 PM
Japanese... That crucial human feedback is kind of lacking.

I had a very hilarious sexual conversation with a Japanese guy today at work. In front of the receptionist.

Best part was when we got onto the subject of "manko" and he mentioned "I like them" in English. I said I did too, and he goes, "because you have one".

Is that what you mean by human feedback? :V
: Re: Haiku Topic
: Dark Pulse April 17, 2010, 12:36:36 AM
Partially. Although hopefully I would not be told that I have one. Last I checked, I didn't, and I don't exactly plan on adding one, either.

But by feedback I also mean things like making sure I'm getting the right pronounciation for a given kanji, right usage of the right kanji, right reading of it, and so on. For all intents and purposes, once you get the jouyou kanji drilled into your head, all that's left to learning Japanese is the grammatical structures and little nuances.

This haiku thread is losing all of its haiku.  I'm disappointed.

I know what you mean. I'm kinda disappointed. Everyone else fails.

You and me, Loli. It seems we're the only one who care to haiku.

Why, thank you Fabro.  Hisui doujin or not, you're cool in my book.

Shin, it's funny though.  See, I don't even have a degree in English, nor do I really have an interest in writing.  This is just for fun.

You won't believe it, but I eventually started the doujin.

I don't believe it. There is no Hisui doujin. The doujin's a lie.  :slowpoke:

You're forgetting me, and all my contributions. Jeez, short memories.

That's phenominal!  As usual, I'd love to see the work you've done.

You're forgetting me, and all my contributions. Jeez, short memories.
Shin and I haven't made an unmetered post yet.  You, mister Pulse, have.

Shin and I haven't made an unmetered post yet.  You, mister Pulse, have.

I beg to differ. Shin has made a few of them, or rather, errors.

Here's Exhibit A:
Webster (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/style) disagrees. According to the dictionary, it's two count.
Splitting words? That can't count, man.

Here's Exhibit B:
I was wondering who you were talking about with that SM name...I didn't realize that you were talking 'bout me. Feels kinda dirty...  :-\
Five-Seven-Five, and then the word splitting happens. Shin fails it, sorry. LoliSauce has won, and so this silly metered post crap can end now.

Or keep on going, and eventually you'll miss, then nobody wins.

It would be awesome if the doujin was like this, but mouse drawing sucks.

I made mistakes too.  It's not about winning or losing some big game.   If we make mistakes, then we fix them.  Just stay in meter all the time.  Isn't that the point, and for that matter the fun, of this whole damn thread?  Yeah, it's pretty tough to converse normally while pulling haiku shit, but hey, as long as this thread's still alive then I'm gonna stick to it.

Goddamn it Rowan.  Your MSPaint drawings make me lol every time.

: Dark Pulse April 17, 2010, 05:48:18 AM
Well that's the problem. This is not haiku really, it's just metered verse. There's a difference.

Maybe we should rename it? It would make more sense.

Congrats on 2k. Then again, I'm one-eighth there, so my life sucks too. :D

are slowly fraying apart.
You are lost to me.

Bottom line kanji is read as "eni" instead of "enishi", to keep within 5-7-5.

Two more on my way home from work.

We locked our fingers,
a promise made with pinkies,
"I'll love you, always."

I cannot return,
even if I could go back,
there is nothing left.

Those are awfully depressing haiku, missy.  Let that old shit go, and try cheering up.  I hear that new happiness thing is contagious.
