Let's analyze episode 26 of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
« on: May 24, 2007, 05:23:44 PM »
Copy and pasted from /a/nime.

Shinji's mind was unable to understand the difference between shape (God's creation and the outer appearance and other's perception) and image (one's own perception); the ideas that he was taught and given to him by society were simply seen as the truth without giving that truth an image. Since Shinji saw truth as this, he was unable to form his own image and only saw himself as other saw him, thus he was dependent on the praise of other and could not bear the consequence of failure.

He began to see that his image was tainted by the ideas of other and Shinji's shape. He then begin to realize that he is capable of having subjective thinking and view the world in a slightly skewed image. After realizing this, he sees that the World around him is not cruel and bad, but that is due to viewing the World in that manner; if Shinji imagined his World in a slightly different manner, then his image would become much more positive and become more optimistic of his life.

The hatred that Shinji had for himself (created from his shape) was the reason that he had no image of reality; he needed to learn that ideas taught to him are only one person's perception of truth and is not absolute truth. In order to overcome that and begin to form his own image of truth, Shinji needed to realize this. With the help of the image of the others close to Shinji, he saw that the truth of the World is not grand and the rule of One, but rather an almost insignificant view of reality. Once Shinji saw this, he realized that the image of others should only be used to help form the image of self and not define it. Coming to this epiphany, he is able to shatter the ideas of his mind created by others, and gave Shinji the will to form his own image and path and life.

------

I posted this because I actually LIKED the TV ending of the series.  Shinji's teenage angst is what really drew me to the series.  No, really.  The fighting angels in giant mecha part was just a treat.  So with TV Ep. 26, Shinji found self-worth in himself and that was the resolution to his angst.  Which is why I liked Evangelion.

I'm glad somebody else liked and actually understood the ending of Eva other than myself (even though that was just repost, I'm assuming you did as well mailorder).  There was one thing that I never really understood though.  In End of Eva movie, why did Shinji start choking out Asuka after the world was being destroyed/reborn?  Like...he just finally gets to that point where he understands that he doesn't have to kill everyone off and stuff, and chooses to save them all...and then he just ends up choking Asuka for some reason?  Wtf?
<LoliSauce>   Yeah, so I live right in between an elementary school and a middle school about a block on each side of me

i thought the director actually admitted that, "oh yeah, we really didnt know what the hell we were talking about" They just threw out random stuff and what stuck was what stuck. Anyway, with Eva, like Karekano, GENON proves they they're really lazy with their animation. As a former animator, i actually said, "wow, thats goddamn lazy animation"

anyway the only thing i remeber from ep 26 was- congratulations congratulations congratulations congratulations congratulations congratulations congratulations congratulations congratulations congratulations congratulations congratulations congratulations congratulations

I used to know the answer to this.  Had to do with all the past experiences he had with her.  She just confuses him.  There's moments where they just kiss randomly, then there's times she's just pissed at him.  You know what, screw it.  I'm just gonna say angst.  Teenage angst is why he did that.

I'll ask on /a/ later, I'm curious too =.=

Oh, come on!  You know you wanna prove me wrong and drop some crazy stuff about Evangelion.

I dunno if Hideaki Anno really said that or not, but he was genuinely pissed that nobody liked the TV ending.  He got even got death threats and stuff, fans claiming he wrote a piss-poor ending for the series.  Which is why End of Evangelion happened.  Anno's sort of an unstable guy to begin with, it's amazing he's collected enough to direct stuff.  Check out this article:
Hideaki Anno talks to kids

I thought GAINAX did the animation?  While I also think Evangelion and KareKano's animation is poopy, there's stuff like FLCL and Diebuster which had beautiful animation.  But to be fair, they were 6-episode OVAs with higher budgets... but hey!  Gurren-Lagann's a TV series by GAINAX that is gorgeous.  So yep.  Maybe GAINAX just has more cash to spend now.
