I've seen a bunch of people talking about this on irc before, who all plays this stuff?  It's coming out of beta pretty soon, I just bought it myself, what are all of your usernames?

Benny0 is my username.

Isn't this the DotA clone?  :psyduck:
: Re: Heroes of Newerth
: Benny1 May 07, 2010, 06:22:27 PM
Yeah, maybe I should have a more detailed first post >_>

I haven't played DotA really myself, the last time I played was RoC and it was super casual stuff always, but people tell me overall HoN has more emphasis on carries (fuck S2 agi heroes, they're broken 90% of the time) and is a little faster paced.  I've had a lot of fun playing it, and though I do hope it eventually gets more polished over time, I figured it's worth the 30 bux I tossed at it.
: Re: Heroes of Newerth
: Alfonse May 07, 2010, 06:53:29 PM
The TFT version, DotA Allstars, is a far cry from what it used to be during the RoC days, due to it being developed by another guy (Icefrog) rather than the original creator (Eul). Perhaps someone more adapt can fill us in on the history of DotA, because I remember only bits and pieces of it.

: MagnusXL May 07, 2010, 07:40:16 PM
I don't play this anymore because League of Legends is better.

As far as AoS maps go, I always found DoTA to be a little ho-hum anyways.
: Re: Heroes of Newerth
: Rei May 07, 2010, 10:14:23 PM
Yes, it's a dota clone. They use a lot of the same heroes with some balance changes (though S2 isn't the greatest at "balancing")

But yeeeeah... I've played LoL, but I'm not too much of a fan. It just feels too slow to me. Also the balancing in that game isn't the greatest idea. Though one of my favorite things about LoL is the fact that you can buff all of your spells with items.
: Re: Heroes of Newerth
: Cornix May 09, 2010, 07:28:18 AM
The username I bought is Cornix, though through beta I used faelirae and LonePenguin as well.

HoN's emphasis on carries dropped significantly recently, the big reason for the emphasis was that originally some 'orb' effects stacked in HoN as opposed to DotA. I.e. you could stack lifesteal on top of shieldbreaker or sange and yasha. You now no longer can (other than abyssal skull but that's the same as DotA iirc.)
Overall I like HoN more than DotA and I despise LoL, I know DotA is the original, and neither of my two favorite characters have made it to HoN (yet) in Windrunner and Enchantress, but HoN just feels and looks smoother.
People bitch every time a new hero comes out that S2 sucks at balancing, but the same thing happens in DotA.. they release a hero and it's either complete shit or omg awesome... and then it gets tweaked and it all works. Forsaken Archer was omg terrible and engineer was absolutely ridiculously amazing, and now they're both heroes you only see some of the time. Chipper isn't even all that good, he needs rockets less often but otherwise he's fine. I'm sure Belphagor will either be stupid or outstanding when he comes out, but that's what always happens.
Besides.. none of the new characters have measured up to the 'top tier' yet anyway... Jeraziah Tempest Plague Hellbringer Demented Shaman Behemoth are still omgridiculous... and the only really difficult one to play is behemoth, and even that is a stretch... but those characters were absolutely ridiculous in DotA too (Omniknight, I forget who tempest is, lich, warlock, dazzle, earthshaker).

The upcoming patch is said to be the largest patch yet, has major changes coming for Engineer, Fayde, Rampage, and Gauntlet, a new item, and enough balance changes to make it the largest patch.  I am extremely excited, and it's supposed to go to the test server in about a week.

Rampage is my favorite hero, to put this into perspective.  Nome and Idejder are claiming the remake is competitive, and considering Nome is an old, old DotA player (I was quite surprised to learn that Meepo was a suggestion from him!), I have a feeling he does have a decent idea of what's good and what isn't.

So excited!  Did any of you watch Dreamhack Honcast?  KDe beating txl without H4nn1 was incredible.  They really deserved the win.

oh they got dreamhack up already? damn ill have to watch that. the patch is also sounding really good.

: Rei June 22, 2010, 10:29:24 PM
Yeah I'm kind of looking forward to the new patch.

I just hope they don't create any stupid bugs...

Since they said it will be on the test realm, I'll go ahead and test it out.

also, tempest in dota is enigma

If you're super interested in the new patch like I am, http://replays.heroesofnewerth.com/match_replay.php?mid=5168873 is a replay that... I have no idea how they did this, but Rampage is played by Nome in the updated version, AND it has Admiral (but he is completely invisible).

His charge warning is gone, his movespeed aura is changed into an active skill, dunno how it works, his bash has some sort of charge thing going on, and his ulti is like... well, whenever Nome used it, he dragged people behind him.  It was weird lol.

Sucks Admiral was invisible.  Oh wait, I mean Gladiator, silly me :3
: Re: Heroes of Newerth
: Cornix June 23, 2010, 12:29:58 PM
The charge warning being gone is going to make him better right away... still no pesti with just that change though.

I'm pretty sure his bash is going to work like chronos' bash works now.

Now we have puck rexxar and admiral in game.. I want my windrunner god damn it S2!

Though really, I think HoN needs more tanks
: Re: Heroes of Newerth
: Benny1 June 23, 2010, 08:18:40 PM
I like Legionnaire, but the niche he excels in (double melee lanes, high physical damage lineups) aren't exactly generally good lineups, so he's fairly bad in most games, and Armadon... I don't know if he's good or not.  se'busca played a really good game with him, in one fairly well known in house, but I dunno...

Armadon is a really good tank if you have an ally with Nome's wisdom and he has tons and tons of regen. He can just spam snot and quills, then turn around to take a lot less damage and let out more quills. He's a good character IMO, just doesn't help the team much other than giving out -armor, slow, and some damage to everything.

He's good at harassing early game, but is easily countered by mana battery.
: Re: Heroes of Newerth
: Nebi June 23, 2010, 11:37:42 PM
The flaw with "tanking" is that no one's going to bother with you if you don't dish out enough damage to bother being focused on.
Mock of brilliance fixes that but it takes a lot to farm. (also good initiation)

Yay more gankers \o/
: Re: Heroes of Newerth
: MagnusXL June 24, 2010, 03:13:43 AM
Unless said tank also has sufficient CC, a taunt, or was damaged at some other point.

In team fights, tanks are usually best at being annoying by initiating and cock blocking enemy champs from attacking your allies. No one says you can't draw turret aggro in a team fight if that's what it takes to push the lane / wipe out the enemy team. You don't need a creep wave to push if your tank is bulky enough and your team can drop a turret in any decent amount of time.  There's more to an AoS than just killing enemy champions.

But yeah, generally focusing down the tank first is a bad idea.
: Re: Heroes of Newerth
: Mikros June 24, 2010, 04:05:11 AM
HoN needs more ganking and pushing Heroes in my opinion. That's what speeds up the game and keeps it dynamic. I'm really glad about the addition of Bubbles, Tundra and Kunkka.

Even gank/push heroes can take a beating after initiation and still pose a threat. The tanking heroes of the past really dont fit into HoN anymore like Centaur. Legionnaire is the only hero I'd accept as tank at this point. But I'd also like to see Huskar added to HoN :)

also, yey at first post in hon thread  :psyduck:
: Re: Heroes of Newerth
: Benny1 June 24, 2010, 01:13:34 PM
Pushing needs a nerf, not to be made better.  We need anti-pushers.  They are doing gankers though and I like that.  Ganking is indeed fun.

If you've ever played against Armadon, you don't want him to be lasting the longest. Every time he does his quill which have a REALLY low cooldown they do more damage. And every time he snots you, it stacks the -armor buff.

If he farms up a shieldbreaker, (not hard) he's a prime target lol.
: Re: Heroes of Newerth
: Nebi June 25, 2010, 10:27:25 AM
I don't know about lasting the longest but first priority targets are usually...

1) Initiators before they use their initiation (plague, behemoth, etc)
2) Squishy disablers
3) Healers?

Something like that.

IGN Irysa

Unsurprisingly.

HoN metagame still doesn't reward pushing strats enough for them to be really viable right now, that's my only real problem with it.

But I did carry a game as torturer and win in 20 minutes the other day in AR with Polly, Jester, Dsham and Plague rider on my team. Fun stuff.

New boots maybe being added, give 100 MS after not attacking, being attacked, using items (other than runes, heals, and wards), and casting spells.  Super good for roaming/ganking.

Care to post the entirety of the changelog here? I can't get on the test client forums at all due to a forum issue.

BUT THE KRAKEN WILL BE RELEASED

I pmed it to you lol.

Forsaken Archer has the worst attack damage in the game, not counting Soulstealer, who has one less max base damage.  Kinda funny.  People say she won't carry anymore but her animation is so good I'm almost sure she will still.

Oh, there's supposed to be a new hero throughout the week.

EDIT: IT'S DWARVEN SNIPER ROFL.  That's okay though I've actually wanted him ported so I could outrange towers.

Oh, Kraken remake is coming.

Shameless doublepost bump because Starcraft 2 kicked us off the front page.

New test patch up tomorrow.  Kraken and Deadwood reworks.  Chronos finally getting seriously nerfed, Nymphora taking some tweaks, Sand Wraith fixed finally too, Engineer taking some tweaks.  New 3v3 map.
