SWR has not had an update since its last demo patch in November or so. Tasofro's blog is silent.

According to your profile you're in CA, and there's a pretty large number of CA players... have you tried netplay?
: Re: IaMP - Immaterial and Missing Power
: mir February 26, 2008, 04:06:19 PM
CA is a big place, at least I haven't seen any that are less than say 60-70 miles away. That, and I kinda don't know where to find them <.<

As for netplay, no not really. If it's anything like melty netplay it'll desync every 30 seconds due to sbcglobal adsl being a pos.

He's talking about his ISP. I've been using SBC since I was 12 (I'm 18 now, 19 this year) and I've never had any problems with them. Except the two times the DNS servers died... then I switched to OpenDNS.

Well, desyncs are not disconnections. Very, very different things.

But it doesn't hurt to point out that there aren't any problems with it, anyway!

Let me drop a little math on you guys.

Let p = max/potential skill of player.
Let i = player's skill in IaMP.
Let m = player's skill in MBAC.

p = i + m

Thus, the better you are at one game, the worse you are at the other.

That said, I play Patch and Yukari. I suck though.

⑨⑨⑨⑨⑨⑨⑨⑨⑨

I agree about the p=i+m formula, so I've been putting off IaMP so my friends can focus on Melty.

But shouldn't it be:
Let P = max/potential skill of player.
Let I = player's skill in IaMP.
Let M = player's skill in MBAC.
Let a = player's skill in Arcana Heart,

Therefore,
I+a+M=P

High level IaMP is about mind games, strong defense, spacing, and long rushdown strings.

Patch vs Yuyu (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Baazgkh2KLM), probably the most famous IaMP match ever
Youmu vs Remilia (http://youtube.com/watch?v=1LmbLO2c544)
Alice vs Suika (http://youtube.com/watch?v=-jjPWviI8kw)
Sakuya vs Yukari (http://youtube.com/watch?v=SbkOmd4Y4uU)
Reimu vs Marisa (http://youtube.com/watch?v=QsKus5sI1Lo)
Meirin vs Reimu (http://youtube.com/watch?v=26tghGQoa2A)

What about that 3.DB? Try dashing through that.

Also, can't it be said that you can dash through most of almost every character's arsenal?
: Re: IaMP - Immaterial and Missing Power
: Alfonse March 02, 2008, 12:10:13 AM
I know, it's low level play for a reason, it's so easily counterable is funny.

Patchy suffers the most out of projectile grazing because the large majority of her attacks are projectiles, and she's almost hopeless in melee (save for her j.C? The jumping book of death  :V).

Oh, what does it mean when there's a sound of glass shattering when you hit an opponent with a heavy attack, i.e. an overhead?

j.C is a bullet. C button is universally bullet attack. You're probably thinking her j.B.

The loud sound and starshitting is indicative of a counterhit. They're very clearly broadcasted in IaMP.

Also, can't it be said that you can dash through most of almost every character's arsenal?

Patchouli has far less effective melee than anyone else in the game, and while other characters can stagger melee-melee strings, it's not that practical for her.

10 characters seems to be the new default standard for Arc System fighters without a previous installment: SBX, HnK, BlazBlue. Given that Tasofro's games are highly influenced by Arc, this isn't too unexpected

In the context of IaMP 11 characters is fine, although the 11th character is a bit out of place since she wasn't planned to be in the game originally. SWR had up to 20 character slots in its data files but god knows when we'll be seeing that game; I don't expect more than 16 characters anyways

That's, uh, usually why we don't recommend starting with Hong. She needs a solid understanding of movement to use effectively, and you tend to get tunnel visioned when playing her. Youmu sort of has a similar problem, but not as bad.

Lunatic story mode is excellent for learning proper movement and grazing, think of it as a tutorial mode.

Lunatic actually trains your graze instinct to a tee. When I was running Lunatic story for every character the only one I couldn't finish was Suika's final with Reimu. Circling 1 frame opening Spell cards for the rape.

That's probably because Reimu's grazing is the worst in the game, tied with Meiling. She blocks well though! (Unless you mean final spellcard when playing as Suika, then the answer is just to go under her and spam 2c. A lot. Seriously.)

Unrelatedly, I wrote a utility a few days ago to display the hitbox data, for dorks interested in that sort of thing. Check it out. (http://iamp.mizuumi.net/index.php/Framedata_displayer)

So, after not having played IaMP in over a year, I am thinking of trying to get back into it. What are the changes in the year that I was absent? New caster? Different tiers? etc.. I'll be picking it up using a stick now, though. That might improve my execution, which used to suck pretty bad before when I played pad-amp.

The game itself hasn't changed, it's the same as it's been since 2005. There have been lots of new techniques and tactics discovered. There is a custom caster client with support for a million things including custom colors, player names, auto replay saving and naming, and spectate mode (watch a game without sniping it) as well as an improved training mode dummy that you can set with a large number of predefined actions.

The tiers have shifted a bit and generally people agree with this list now:

A Tier: o 56.5 - Marisa Kirisame, o 55.0 - Sakuya Izayoi
B Tier: o 52.5 - Alice Margatroid, o 52.0 - Remilia Scarlet, o 51.0 - Yukari Yakumo, o 50.5 - Suika Ibuki
C Tier: o 49.0 - Reimu Hakurei, o 48.5 - Youmu Konpaku,  o 48.0 - Yuyuko Saigyouji
D Tier: o 46.0 - Patchouli Knowledge, o 42.0 - Hong Meirin

Specific matchup information is on the FAQ page of IaMPWiki.

The thing with IaMP though is that everyone is still competitive, with the exception of Meirin whose inherent handicaps makes her difficult to use even with highly skilled players. Perusing through the reps of any average Japanese tournament will show that the character spread is typically well-rounded with the exception of Meirin, and due to the nature of the game's offense every character has tactics that they can use to be effective at high level play.
