On shortcomings, and overcoming them.
« on: October 04, 2007, 03:22:58 AM »
I'm in desert hell, as I've made apparent numerous times, and with nothing to do but technical work and combo practice, I'm beginning to run up facefirst against several of my bad habits and technical failings.  What I'm wondering is what kinds of stumbling blocks have you had as you progressed to your current level, and what did you do to overcome them?

Currently:

IADs, lots of practice after switching to an arcade stick.
TK moves, learning the input mechanics (repetetive practice was fruitless until I realized SJ TKs had been disabled in B2.)

Now I have to contend with my lopsided right-side play (can't 421 consistently to save my life.)

Lolz I get caught in those all the time, especially when I'm playing vs both tohnos. Try to jump in, they do dragonpunch. Shield shield! Crap, 2nd hit connected.

Aside from that, I am having trouble getting used to new equipment (for some reason my IAD going right isn't coming out properly O.o)  and consistently landing shield & shield follow-ups.

There's nothing to fear now.

EDIT: I just realized I posted what I have trouble with right now, not what I've overcome. Oh well, who cares.

I screw up tons of execution (IADs from 2p side, instant airthrow, superjumps, etc) because I'm not completely used to stick yet despite having played on it exclusively for... 6 months or so? I also end up eating a combo whenever I try to stagger a blockstring because the other player is mashing hard, due my stagger timing sucking. And I keep screwing up wakeups with some characters due to differences in wakeup time. I need to figure how to punish/beat antiair Len 5c too...

I used to be unable to execute 421 (a.k.a Dragon punch) properly, so i practiced alot on the 2P side until i overcame the problem...

Now...

I cant execute 623 properly! :psyduck:

Well, I alternate between attack mode and defense mode, I can't play as both. Either I rush the opponent like there's no tomorrow, or I block, block, block like my life depended on it.

Oh yeah, try ending a BNB with an airthrow on a keyboard with default P1 controls. Have fun while doing it.  :V

I haven't been getting mad as of late, and it's helped my game plenty.

Shortcoming and cure, I assume?   :V

I'm forcing myself to face down opponents on the left side to grind out my lopsided habits.  Still can't 421 to save my life, or IAD reliably enough yet.

Don't force yourself to anything. Just take all the courage you can build up and charge at your opponent with it, thus overwhelming him with sheer power and will.

100% guaranteed to give you victory.
