Your first fighting game.
« on: October 27, 2010, 04:59:14 AM »
Today I got asked about my first encounter with fighting games. It made me think, so I thought I'd share (OMG SHAREFAG).

My first encounter with arcade FG - and my dad loves to tell this story - was me kicking some guy's ass at Mortal Kombat when it was new. I was so small I had to stand on a stepping stool to reach the controls. This guy was raping everybody, 50 win streak or so, at a mall arcade. Time Out kind of thing. Dad and I waited in line, he held my hand and all. I remember this very clearly because there was a KB Toys across the way where my grandpa went to buy a Supersoaker. I remember watching him go into the store while waiting in line (that's how long the line was, coming out of the arcade about 20 people deep). I get there, finally, hop up on a stool, and body the dude. I think was 7 or so? Stay free, America.

What was your first fighting game? Any interesting experiences?

Street Fighter 2 on SNES. Still the only console I ever owned. And will ever own. Though that game sucks as hell from a recent point of view.

This x infinity.

My first non-arcade FG is kinda blurry. I can't remember if it was OMF or SF2. I definitely played a lot of both. EC as well, but that was hell without a 6 button pad. Sup pressing start to switch between punch and kick.

I still play OMF to this day. I still find my favourite 'bot to be Shadow with the ice mod, but Gargoyle could do some crazy shit.

Double Dragon.

As in, mode b of the original Double Dragon, not the spinoff fighters.

Other than that, I guess getting absolutely destroyed by a friend at some version of SF2 on SNES when I had no concept of how fighting games worked. What a dick.

SFII on SNES as well, and then years of family&friend Alpha 2/3 and Mahvel 1. Though it wasn't until MBR/MBAC that I started playing competitively. :toot:

KOF '98, in 1999 when I was in vacations on São João de Meriti, Brazil. It was a PS1 inside from an arcade cabinet.

I've really began to dedicate in F-games in 2004, playing a KOF '98 arcade in a bar (Bar do Tião) near to my house, and not using the "special shortcuts" (L1, L2, R1, R2 from SPECIAL config mode) anymore when I was praticing in PS1.

I started off playing SFII on SNES. After that it was just different Tekken games as they came out and DoA3/DoA4.

SFII CE on Genesis.  With a three button controller.  I could switch fast enough to handle top difficulty, not that the AI was much to talk about for that one.

Is this first serious fighting game or first fighting game?  I think most people in my generation mashed streetfighter (or if they were cool, PowerStone) when they were younger.  But first time I bothered to seriously learn the mechanics?  -  Melty Blood.  Deal with it.

Fun fact: The first character I saw being played was Kohaku.  I thought the game was dumb, hated fighting games, and even when I picked up the game as an "exception" to my rules disliking the fighting game genre, I probably liked Kohaku the least out of the entire cast.  Atleast half a decade ago, Melty Blood was my first experience with Type Moon.  I had a passing interest in anime and the like, but I wasn't at the level anyone would call an otaku.  I disliked people who were "too into" anime.

My first fighting game was SF2 for SNES.  First time I ever played a fighter in an arcade was Marvel vs Capcom in like mid-late middle school I think?  First fighting game that got me interested in learning and playing above scrub level was Guilty Gear XX.  First time I played in a tournament was in Evo 07, Melty side tourney.

Like many others, my first experience with fighters was SF2 on the SNES and I was like 4 or 5 at the time. Believe it or not, I learned how to do a hurricane kick before a fireball. I just couldn't understand why I couldn't get fireballs to work and nobody bothered to show me what I was doing wrong. After I dunno how many tries, eventually I got this bright idea of reversing the hurricane kick motion and pressing the buttons that were located above the kick buttons. Lo and behold I learned how to fireball. It was one of the greatest (and most embarrassing) experiences I've had with fighters. :slowpoke:
