It's not strange at all. The game was insanely popular, revolutionalized fighting games period, came out right when consoles were getting really mainstream... etc, etc etc
clmelty: great roku! lol / I like roku lol

Then the question of which version of SF2 did people play first comes up, or is that too technical? lol

Well, I only remember seeing SF2 once or twice in an arcade, never played it before. I did not like fighting games too much when I was little. (mostly because some random high school/college student would always RAEP me without mercy)

First games that I played and enjoyed were Super Smash Bros was Tekken 3 and, later, Tekken Tag Tournament.

First 2D game was KoF 1998 or 2000 (can't remember exactly). I sucked at it big time. First 2D game I liked was Melty Blood Act Cadenza  :toot:

Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition on Sega Genesis. My older sister used to kick my ass with E. Honda's Hundred Hand Slap because she could mash the button fast enough and I couldn't.

To be fair, I was about eight and she was fourteen.

This reminds me of the trouble I had attempting to mash fierce/roundhouse (honda/chun) to get the fast version to come out when I was a kid.  I could do light and medium versions fine enough, but couldn't ever manage to do the heavy version.  Later I felt like a genius when I realized I could mash light+heavy or mid+heavy together and somehow still get the heavy one.

I also remember reading input instructions on some game or another (MK2?  SF2?  One of my earlier ones, I dunno) and seeing "Down, Down/Forward, Forward, Punch" as attack notation and confusedly trying to press 2266P.  lol, made me so frustrated until I realized Down/Forward meant diagonal.

I can't remember what my first fighting game was. It was either Mortal Kombat on the PC (I got one of those multiple games-in-1 CDs with it on there) Battle Arena Toshinden for the Gameboy, or KoF 96 for the gameboy

My absolute very first FG was this lame-ass Power Rangers game in a bundle of emulated games from the SNES. I played some other fighters in there too. Ah, my childhood...

But Melty was my first serious fighter. The first original Melty Blood. Then shifted to ReAct, Act Cadenza then Actress Again.

Lame? This was absolutely epic, and still is. Just look at the music, it's EPIC! Also, only 2D fighter I knew that can hit opponents when they are knocked down. 2A+B all day!

Wonder if we're talking about the same game. It's the one where you can select the giant robots, not the rangers. Story mode involves choosing either the classic dinosaurs version or the white tiger one, beating the crap out of the other versions and finally fighting Ivan Ooze. I was really a little kid when I played it so I had no clue what to do. I still have it in fact. Should try it out one day...

Yes, I'm talking about that one, too. And I still have that game module for SNES as well.

In MAX mode, the super move was something like 623623623B, one of a hell flashy fullscreen laz0r beam.

I vaguely remember that game.  I only remember that there were a lot of cool zords to play and that it was really hard to randomly mash out the cool moves.  =<

What was the actual title?

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers - The Fighting Edition.

IIRC only one character was able to do advanced combos, and that was Zedd. Maybe Ninja Megazord, too.

This game is basically New Mobile Gundam Wing: Endless Duel, only with Zords instead of Gundams. Even the same engine.

Everyone of you should give Super Cosplay Wars Genkai Toppa a shot. It's a poverty fighter, no less - but it's surprisingly addictive.

I imagine 90% of people will say SF2 (given that they're old enough), same with me. I didn't play competitively until Reload though.

That should be the question, imo.  What was your fighting game that you were serious about, and starting studying to win?

Myself, the first fighting game I played I actually don't know.  It was this game where you played either a white guy who street fights, or some asian dude who uses karate.  Anybody know it?  Came out when I was a kid, so maybe...early to mid nineties?
