MBCaster Problem
« on: June 10, 2008, 05:59:40 PM »
MBCaster's worked fine on my old computer, but on this laptop, whenever I run it, all it gives me is:

Quote
MBCaster version 080424, protocol version 2
Command version : 144
You are identified as: Lupo

Any ideas what the problem may be?

Try running it directly from the command line -- it might be spitting an error you're not aware of, and since it's a CLI application, it's closing before you can see if anything's happened.

Both computers run Vista.

That is Bad with a capital b. If it is freezing after printing that, then it's not even making it to the menu in that case - And all it does between what you printed and when it gets there is it sets up the other threads for networking. it does nothing else. Meaning it's freezing up trying to set itself up. I have never heard of this problem before and don't know what would cause it, and don't see any way to find out without pointing a debugger at it.

(If it's not freezing, try setting a different myPort value.)

make sure you copied all the files for MB caster I think there are 2 or 3 not having those could cause weird errors, aka just dl it from scratch you may of just copied MBcaster from your old compy after you installed MB on your new computer and forgot about the other files, make sure they are also in the right place, but I have not seen this error with caster before so im not sure.

Uh, I have mbcaster.exe, config_caster.ini, and info.ini in the MBACWIN folder. Still not working.

uhh all thats left is a complete reinstall of both MBAC, and MB caster don't forget to grab the latest versions again.  It may also be some weird preference that got checked or something thats causing the error I would try the command line thing again before you attempt a reinstal and see if you get any also search google for similar CLI apps problems.

Not working still, could this being a 64-Bit OS be a problem?

noradseven: As usual, you're blabbering without knowing what the fuck you're talking about, so shut up. I get enough headaches with Caster without people making suggestions that are flat out wrong.

If it's freezing at that point, guess what: the MBAC install itself doesn't even factor into it because it never even gets a chance to run MBAC. Additionally, lacking any particular files from MBCaster will not cause this problem. Congratulations, your suggestions will now accomplish nothing whatsoever. The only possibility is that MBCaster.exe is somehow corrupted, which is enough of a possibility that redownloading MBCaster might not be a bad idea: But since zip files have added in protection against corruption I find this highly doubtful as well.

I also do not think it is Vista 64-bit's problem. There is nothing that occurs at that point which can cause that, and I have heard of no issues with MBCaster on that. The only things between that point and where the main menu are reached is where it initializes the networking threads and waits for everything to be all ready so it can continue. Literally nothing else happens in this time. Period.

So obviously it's either failing to setup its threads or blocking for something that never happens. In either case, I do not see how it could be Caster's fault but there is the possibility of memory corruption somewhere. It's entirely possible that hMutex is never freed up, so it blocks for it forever. But then that would imply that something is blocking with it, and I don't have a clue what that would be.

I'll look into a debug build here, as this is very, very, very strange and probably more indicative of a screwed up Windows install than anything else.

Thanks for putting in an effort to help, mauve.

Here's an image of what it does when I boot up mbcaster.exe. Don't know if it'll help at all.

'kay. It's a networking failure of some sort. GetMyPort() is what's holding things up. And all that does is send packets to localhost (127.0.0.1) so either the echo thread is failing or your routing tables are extremely weird.

...IIRC there were some changes to that code in the upstream Caster versions that didn't make their way into MBCaster 'cause I didn't think it was too important. You might want to try running IaMP's Caster since that has those fixes.

'kay so I'm just a dummy then. No one ever complained about it so it kept slipping my mind when it came to porting in fixes from stock caster.

Try this build.
