Fast Overheads
« on: November 16, 2007, 03:52:02 PM »
I've been having lots of trouble recently with moves like sion 6B and warc 5. I kind of assumed I would get better at blocking these as I got more EXP against these characters, but recently I've been doing this weird thing where I try to pre-empt overheads and block high before it even starts up, which I've had limited success with.

Do higher-level players actually block moves like sion 6B on reaction? Is it even doable?  Or is it better to invest my time into trying to predict the overhead? What do the top players do?

You definitely don't want to preempt blocking, it'll give you bad habits later and it also means you're fighting against someone predictable.  Training your reaction time to block overheads is the way to go

... This is, of course, for overheads you can react to. For stuff like Akiha instant j.2C, Kohaku instant j.C, and other similarly extremely fast overheads, guessing them is the only way to go...

You might want to try recognizing the different strings that the opponent is using to set up the overhead (in your case Sion's 6B and Warc's [5B]?) because throwing out overheads by themselves without some kind of protection is usually not a good idea with the exception of the above two.

Try not to get trained too much to block low at certain times and you won't find yourself going "Oh no he's doing 6B!! I need to block high!" two frames before you get hit. Just focused and don't go on autopilot, and V./Sion 6B and W/Arc 5[ B ] won't be that hard to block on reaction (other examples: Shiki/Nanaya 5B[ B ], V.Akiha 6C, Hisui assist)

As Tropsy said, the REAL fast overheads (especially instant Kohaku j.C) you really just have to guess. I swear, that Kohaku j.C....it's murder.

become psychic!

its more of training urself to see the overhead and react is mostly best bet.. sometimes you just have to guess it if it is one of those extremes...

Moves you can block on reaction:
sion 6B
V.sion 6B
Warc beat edge 5B
arc Beat edge 5B
Aoko 6[a] and 4C
Kohaku 236[A]
hisui 6C[C]
Red Akiha 2BBB and 6C
Shiki beat edge 5BB
Nanaya 5[C] and beat edge 5BB
Miyako 623B
Satsuki 214B and 214A xx IAD C

Moves that require preempting and full awareness to block on reaction:
Kohaku j.early C
Mech Hisui fuzzy guard
Kohaku fuzzy guard
Miyako IAD AC land 2A or IAD ACB

Moves that most people cannot block on reaction:
Akiha 82C
Arc Fuzzy guard.
Ciel Fuzzy guard
Aoko Fuzzy Guard
Ren Fuzzy guard
Chaos Fuzzy guard

these are pretty much all the options I can think of that realistically could be used on you in a match.

Everyone has that setup and they all suck and get blocked for free by fuzzy guarding. Miyako is really an exception because of how she floats.

Unless a mixup has a high/low hitting point on the same frame it is fuzzy guardable when you know it is coming.  Thats the problem with those types, you can see them coming a mile away.  When you are jumping in on someone unless you have a j.early attack(like kohaku's j.c) as an option(either after landing or with a double jump), there isn't much you can do to beat a fuzzy guard.

Granted if you're using fuzzy guard it's because you can't react to something, but the catch is you don't need to.
