How to beat a turtle?
« on: April 05, 2010, 11:04:18 PM »
Me and a bunch of my friends play MBACPC online, and most of my friends have found a glaring pattern in my plan of attack.

I always go low.

So, I'm tinkering around on training mode, with the dummy set to crouch guard, and none of my attacks (on the ground, at least) can break a crouching guard. How am I supposed to go about this?

I play Kohaku+Hisui, by the way, as Kohaku.

As Kohaku, you've only got two ground overheads; 236[A] and 214C (Hisui table assist). But note that unless you've got your opponent under plant pressure, 236[A] in my experience is pretty unsafe, with canceling it into 22C only helping in some cases. Plus, it's kinda slow sometimes, so sometimes the opponent may see it ahead of time and jump out or at least guard high in time. This is why you mix it up with 236[ B] sometimes to counter the jump outs (charged b version is air unblockable), and 214D sometimes, which looks somewhat deceptively like 236[A] but actually hits low.

It also helps to IAD in to start with overheads at times (basically, IAD jB or jC). I'm not sure what else to add at the moment.

This also would've fit better under Kohaku MBAC Specific or Maids MBAC specific but I guess it works here too if you want to talk about in general. >>;

Planning on switching to H/C-Kohaku soon.

Oh dear. I'm not familiar with IAD.
Guess I better get down to practice.

As for the 236[A,B] mixup game, I can't imagine that working with my friends, they're way too headrushy. XD (so am i <<)

Even though I mentioned I play KohaHisu, I play a few other characters from time to time (Ciel, Nanaya mostly), so I'm wondering if there's any universal solutions on top of KohaHisu specific ones.

In addition to what's been said, instant j.C is also an option for Kohaku against most characters in AC if you have them pinned with a plant.  Deep, half charged j.C/fake and go low can work, too.  You've got good range, decent speed, and Hisui assists; you can make use of them to catch jump outs and punish pokes from ranges most characters have difficulty dealing with.

Step 2 - instant j.C
Step 3 - ???
Step 4 - Profit

The easiest way to force someone to press a button is to go for a throw. If they actually respect you enough not to mash out of your strings, throwing is a very simple way to make them think twice. Kohaku has a ton of throw mixup tricks and gets great oki off of throw. Just keep throwing them until they crack and actually try to mash out. After that, it's up to your yomi to decide when to counter.

Likewise, if someone is turtling, it's not a big problem turtling yourself. Just stay on your corner and wait for them to make a move. If they try jumping, Kohaku's j.b or 5b takes care of that. If they try dashing, well, at least they aren't blocking. MBAC Kohaku isn't really designed for monster rushdown anyway (play MBAA for that). What she has are great long-range normals and excellent air mobility that make it hard to lock her down. If you have the life lead, lame it out and force the timer to make them come to you.

Well some birds of prey like to lift turtles up into the air, then drop them from great heights to break their shells.

Turtles are usually bad at chasing people.  If you can get a lead just run away and your opponent will suicide into your j.b.

You're fucked if you're against http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FRzmTY7wrk though.

if you dont like turtle mode, what is sad, you can turm your opponent into non-turtle grabbing a lot and doing mixups after it. anyway if your opponent is too much on defensive you can always use throw -> mixups, you can j.b on block dash j.b as a kind of slow fuzzy guard (using it you will make your opponent try to jump out of your pressure more often), so you can use the kohaku classic anti-jump style, but dont forget a throw isnt suppose to do damage, its suppose to get you time to do a mixup, which, no matter if your opponent is turtle or not, will be hard to block.
A little bit of console ain't too bad.
