Isn't it because Len's orb absorbs some hits and only a few hits hit Len?

no, a lot of moves in the game are set up that you can only be killed by the final hit. for example get someone's HP down to 1, then throw them with someone who has a multi-hit throw. they won't die until the last hit. the hits before that are set such that they aren't able to kill someone. the same goes for hiero, it doesn't kill until the final hit, and if that final hit never comes out, len doesn't die
