Countering JC spam
« on: June 04, 2008, 06:05:14 AM »
I'm having serious difficulty playing against good Nanaya players due to this annoying little strategy. I play Shiki Tohno, and his 623X's simply don't take priority over Nanaya's JC. I'm trying to air throw but the startup time for Nanaya is pretty short and I can't seem to reliably do it at all, let alone EX SHIELD the thing when it comes down.

Any suggestions at all? I'd had to rely on just holding down shield which isn't very practical.

Maybe you need some better comprehension skills, because last I checked "blocking" isn't considered a "counter" to anything.

Some non smartass answers would be nice.

new players really need to get over this "blocking = bad" phase

if you want to beat nanaya j.C beat its slow startup, if you can't do that block, and block whatever he's going to do after that, because it's nanaya and he can keep you in block for a longass time

If Nanaya's above you and you're on ground and he has thrown out a jc, then block it. It's not the only choice, but far far better than any others. Blocking is very practical since, as you have stated, Nanaya's jc even stuffs shoryus.

Nanaya's jc has massive priority, but it has a distinct contact point of below him. That hitspot is smaller than you think, and the move comes out relatively slow, also. You can avoid having hard time with it by maneuvering your character so that such situations don't occur. In fact, try playing Nanaya against a computer and try to land jcs. You'll be able to find the many weakness of the move through that.

I never said anything of the sort. I'm simply looking for a better way to counter it because, as you said, Nanaya's good at keeping you in block, and copious amounts of it start to get disorientating.

Get used to it, that's Nanaya, he can keep you in block for ages. Just hold down and back since he has fuck-all for mixups so the only way he will ever land a hit on you is if you do something stupid like poke. Just get used to his pressure and try to spot a pattern and either DP it or jump out. You have to accept that Nanaya WILL lock you down and there is very little you can do about it, that's the character he is. Your character doesn't have that same strength, but instead you have long-ranged and fast 2C/j.C, more damage, a slightly better high/low game, etc.

As a Nanaya player, if I'm playing someone for the first time and they're throwing out lots of pokes or jumping out a lot I just smile because it's free wins. When I pressure a guy for 10 seconds or so and he's still blocking that's when I start to get serious as I know it's a match that I'll actually have to put effort in to win. Just sit there, block, force the Nanaya player to actually use effort to keep you locked down, while you wait and look for a spot to break out. Just trust me on this, the people who know how to block are the bane of Nanaya players because if you block there's pretty much nothing he can do about it other than throw you.

If nanaya is really spamming jc, shield it. It has a pretty slow start-up and can be shielded with ease if it's spammed.

If you shield it everytime though, it's getting unsafe because then he just could not do a jC and else land and punish the stand shield by crouch attacks > BnB. It's mostly as Sabator says, block and eating a tickthrow is okay, it's just about ~800 damage. With stupid chars like Sacchin or even Nanaya, too, you have several possibilities on wakeup then.

if you're in the corner, he doesn't even have to empty jump. Just something like doing an airdash where you would normally j.C is awesome heat/shield bait with pretty much any character in the game.

I've always thought the real issue with fighting against Nanaya's j.C was not the vertical range (it doesn't go down nearly as far as people think) but the horizontal range (it goes out way further than people think). The vertical hitbox only goes down to the knife handle, but the horizontal range seems to past the tip (wtf).

I used to airthrow my friend a lot whenever he jumped. But now he counters it with jAs. Maybe this would apply as well? You can cancel the jA into a short air combo too.

Airthrow usually beats j.A spam, work on your timing.

you could try super jumping into an air throw it you move faster and makes it more all surprising and stuff.

Well, I do super jump and air throw immediately, but he still beats me with jAs. I guess it really is my timing.

It's also character-dependent. Good luck air throwing Len out of her j.A.

Clash it first, then throw!  (Then again, I play Miyako whose j.C clashes basically anything, so I have no idea how that would work out with another character.)

Yeah, sometimes when I press Q too early, a Shield comes out, so I shield his 2A. Then, since I have a slight tendency to spam, I canceled the Shield into an airthrow.

I think anyone who perfectly shielded lens 2C at least like 3 hits in a tournament should automatically get a prize.

It continues whatever airhits Ren has done = safe landing everytime with combo opportunity.

Ex: Low jc-djC-2jc = When blocked correctly, Ren can safely continue into ground pressure. When not blocked correctly, the whole thing combos all the way into a full ground combo.
