For those of you looking for a fighting stick
« on: May 24, 2008, 09:16:33 PM »
This assumes you are playing the PC version of Melty. All wired Xbox 360 controllers work as PC gamepads, not just the standard 360 pad, but everything. There is a wired fighting stick for the 360 made by Hori:
http://www.hori.jp/us/products/xbox360/fighting_stick_ex2/index.html
I bought this today with the intention that I was going to use it to play something on my Xbox 360. Then I remembered that it could be used as a PC gamepad. I have been using it for Melty and I really like it. The button layout can be mapped so the controls are arcade perfect for Melty.I got mine for $60 and that's not a bad deal considering what you pay for a custom stick or something like that. If you are looking for a stick and are fine with the Japanese style ones, this might be worth looking into.

Its the same exact stick as the DOA4 one.  I like it but mine has some issues with hitting 9 propperly dunno if its just my stick or if its a design flaw.

So far I haven't had any problems hitting 9 but I haven't had mine long enough to really say for sure.

Design flaw. The diagonals are hard to hit.

My DOA4 is now broken after a year or so (middle-top button decided to stop working) and i recently got a Tekken 5 for $55 + $15 shipping (from EC to WC). It's working a lot better for me, the buttons feel a little nicer and the stick is definitely much, much better. I'm actually finding myself accidentally doing some motions accidentally because the diagonals are so much easier to hit than on a doa4/ex2.

If you already are on your doa4/ex2, there's a way to ghetto mod it easily to help out this little problem.

-Screw out the plate in the bottom
-Screw out the stick
-Carefully unlatch the "bottom" of the stick
-Take out the black switches, and remember where each goes
-Duct tape or put clay or something around the knob-like bottom of the actual rod part of the stick, make sure its evenly distributed
-Reassemble

And you're done, your shitty doa4/ex2 is now less shitty and your dead zone has gone from crater-large to a bit smaller (depending on how much you put on)

I've got this custom 360 stick and its great - http://www.joystickvault.com/showgallery.php/cat/598

Only prob is that you need to DL drivers for it to work. Even though it only takes a minute, might not be internet at some tourney locations/people not willing to get drivers.

Could always throw them on a thumb drive, I'm probably going to end up dual PCBing with a 360pad soon if I can't find a good PCB to hack to throw in for my second one. Jiyu, also, give me that stick, it is far too sick.

op for the everything, get the wii one its $40 and has 8 buttons, and is still hori, grab your PS1 controller and mod its motherboard in instead, buy your pelican adapter, and tada for like $40-60 bucks depending on what you have.

Ends up being compatable with

Wii (GGAC, lol)
Xbox 360   (Virtual fighter 5, and some other 3d's)
PC   (critical)
PS 1-3  (critical)

I ordered a PC/PS2/Xbox 360 custom stick from a friend. Was a bit pricey at $250 but the Xbox 360 compatibility was a bit hard to hack in. Shame it's been stuck in customs for the past 2 months and I'll probably never get it ;_;

Lame, though why would they hold it in customs is the question.

iirc the wii hori stick still uses a hori stick, hori buttons aren't that bad but as we said earlier the hori stick has diagonal trouble

so the doa4, the ex2, and the wii stick (pretty sure) are the ones with that ecky stick, maybe the PS3 sticks (FS3) do too, not sure

i would really recommend the t5 for that amount of money, also saves you the modding. no one cares about wii compatibility (besides you can always just get a convertor to GCN if you really really need it)...also to be compatible with xbox 360 you can't just be woo usb you actually need to have a 360 pcb in there and shit, same goes for ps3

in the end the best option is (not surprisingly) ps2 stick with ps2->pc convertor (unless you hate this game) and maybe a ps2->ps3 convertor in the future. if you dont have a ps3 and have a 360 instead then you really just have to go with a seperate 360 stick. i myself am going to just pad my way out on the 360 since i don't expect the new fighters are going to be too execution heavy....gotta appeal to the casual crowd

http://mycarryingcase.com/PS3-PS2-USB-Adaptor-Cable-for/M/B000YGH3RS.htm

Some folks are calling it the new pelican, and some testing done by tekken players is pointing towards it being just that, so PS1 PCB + that adapter = WIN! If you really want 360 support in a stick you can add a mad catz 360 PCB into a project and dual PCB as well.

-Edit: If you try to procure this on ebay there's no guarantee it's the actual real adapter, this is the only known reliable source for it so far.

or you could just replace the stick with a JLF, I did that on my T5 mod I'm doing and the difference is ridiculous.

Breaking news, HRAP EX is being released for xbox 360. Like any other xbox 360 control device it should work just fine on PC.

It's pretty hard to replace the stock hori stick with a JLF on the Hori ex2, the bottom sticks out on the bottom, so you have to cut out etc. etc., IE: It's a bad stick to mod.

Just replace the ugly ass buttons and you're gold :D (Hori buttons feel weird.)

Could always preorder from Akihabarashop, they're giving a discount on buttons that you order with it (If the EX is like every other HRAP, mod should be mad easy, just need a phillips head, a 7mm Nut Driver, and maybe some pliers)

who plays VF5 :V

SFHD I don't know enough about to argue but is it really gonna be near-carbon copy of ST besides the graphics?

either way i was just seeing it from a standpoint of a beginner, a custom stick with extra capabilities seems too expensive for someone just getting into a game

not to mention VF5....usually VF5 players only play VF5 super seriously since its so hord so they could be happy with just a 360/ps3 stick :V
