An idea that could help pull Japanese players
« on: February 06, 2010, 10:37:46 AM »
Is it possible that the community could approach Sega/Ecole and ask them about potentially funding players traveling to Evo? On the basis that it this is probably the best possible opportunity they have to market the game to America, and also because they've been out of the loop with SBO for 2 years now?

It sounds kind of farfetched but it's a possibility I would hope.

Something along those lines, I was thinking if a major arcade held some sort of tourney, and the top 5 or so win funds (that we fund raise or sega/ecole subsidize) to come over here and play... I have no idea how that would actually work or how to do it though.
They can't get enough of me

Ask someone like curbeh who can actually communicate in jap.  I dunno if we'll get any sort of positive response (or any response at all for that matter), but it's still worth a try.

Maybe it would be easier to talk to SEGA of America and ask them to introduce the idea to the Japan side of the company? I mean technically it's their market this would be affecting.

I was talking to teruta today and learned the follow:
  • There are a couple of Japanese players that would like to come if their plane ticket was payed for (for example: kamei, GO1).
  • teruta is trying to contact more players.
  • Nobody really cares for MBread accounts or IRC.
  • Kubo wants to go if there is a MBACverB tourney.

Other:
Zar is talking with JefferyManson.
We all know about CL by now and will be trying to get him over.

I definitely need to talk to Arly to find out how funding would work so that I can tell them. Since I'm sure thinking that we can pay off a couple of round-trips from Japan is not realistic, at all (Melty Ballers?).

This is were that sponsoring idea Irysa was talking about comes in, it would help if a higher source of bank were present.

Approaching American companies might not be the best course of action; since the game isn't even released here, there might be trade laws being violated, etc etc. Japanese companies would be a better option, but still a long shot. Ecole or French Bread might be worthwhile, but I'll have to leave it to our moonspeak-fluent Melty Breaders to communicate with them.

You could try Tepelin, the guy who is in charge of West Coast Warzone.  That guy is baller and has pretty much given money out of his own pocket for the WCW events.  Not sure how he feels about Evo and MBAA, but i doesn't hurt to ask/try.

I talked to teruta again today, and he gave me some encouraging news

  • Teruta talked with GO1 and a friend that works at ECOLE
  • GO1 definitely wants to come if he could his hands on some money
  • If we could get EVO to send a formal email to ECOLE, we might be able to get some funding from them (he wants me to send an e-mail to him too if that happens)
  • Teruta used to work for ECOLE so he knows some people there
  • He also knows a lot of famous players all over Japan, so he wants to have his hand in any selection process
  • He stress getting someone to to send that email to ECOLE for formality, so we should talk to someone from EVO (Mr. Wizard?)

.... God sent?
I need to talk to Mr. Wizard or someone else deeply involved with EVO, to send an e-mail to ECOLE.

pretty fucking godlike, I must say.

@Curbeh

I really appreciate what you've done for me personally and the community thus far. I got a reply from JM (thanks to your help) and he appears to show much interest in attending...but of course dat yen is an issue.

"We want to participate in it by all means if our purse permits.
And I want to watch WWE or TNA ^^" (JeffreyManson)

And yes, he's quite serious about RASSLIN'.

Japan invades US (again)?
zar are you even aware that your attitude is what drove people off in the first place. i think zar's attitude is worse than all of that. cause neither of you guys mean anything. but zar can poison shit around him. zar's the one that gets personal online and does realtalk that's out of line.

A bit more, things I would need to ask Mr. wizard.

<teruta>
I would like you to ask the company "Ecole" if they can sponser a few of the Japanese players to fly over to America for your tournament. If they do agree to this, is there any chance you can give space for their logo to be shown in some way, for example a mini commercial on the big screen or generally tagged in different parts of the building. Also which players would you be most interested in bringing over to the U.S? If we do get some sort of amount from Ecole or from the U.S players/organizers I propose they split all the sponsored amount in equal sums, and they all can pay for the rest of their journey with their own funds.

He will try to contact:
Kou, Leo, Ieda, SII, AI, Highspeed, Yuu, Kanna, Yoshino, Hagi, JefferyManson, GO1, Kaimaato, Lucky Star

Jin want to come to EVO and can pay for himself

Jin @Evo? Hype! Now I would like to see You there, but that already looks like a big list to work on there.

Thanks for the work there, Curbeh. Also, not sure if he'll see this, but an enormous thanks to teruta for being proxy MeltyBread in Japan.

Should we even be helping some of the poor jp people that are being dicks (as per sp00kys ranting on irc today)?? Some sound like they dont deserve to come cause they only showed some interest after mbaa was dropped from sbo, and they still want their trip fully paid for...

I don't agree with this at all. I don't think we should be paying their ways entirely (maybe helping out, but who really deserves a free ride?), but if the community really wants to be accepted in America, then giving JP players a real reason to trust and care about the American scene is by offering our good will first. We don't really know what happened when GO1 got Spooky's communications, but I'm not in favor of saying "fuck Japan" over that when we have an opportunity for a domestic release. We've all worked too hard for that shit to happen.
