I agree to that Lolisauce, but yeah anyhow if you start out with H-Nanaya Shiki or H-Tohno Shiki then it'll be good for sure.  There combo's are nice and clean and give good damage to your opponent.  You can go to these links here to begin practicing--->http://mbaa.mizuumi.net/index.php/Shiki_Tohno

Yeah, H-Nanaya is pretty easy to pick up. I personally started off with C-Ryougi, but that was more personal preference than anything.

Yeah, usually it depends by preference...most players start out with those character and then once when you feel comfortable with one of those characters you move to another character(obviously), but just experiment with different characters and you'll see who suits you best.

And remember to always go to the MBAA wiki for preference and go on IRC for advice as well.

C-wara. Really long range pokes and easy-to-mash normals. Multi-hit 5b, jc and 2c makes it easy to hit confirm. Regular BnB is simple to do and force heat on wakeup is as american as apple pie.

Any Nero

But expect (well-deserved) hate if you pick him

Might have to disagree with you here. Nero's an odd character with a set of unique mechanics. He doesn't really teach you the game like other characters. Moreover, while getting a couple of simple things down with him is easy, learning to use the zoo effectively, the core of the character, is not a walk in the park.

F Roa is good for beginners because his whole game relies on two combos, two or so major mixups, and one good reversal.  He's really simple, yet effective.

C Roa, on the other hand, is probably one of the most complex characters in the game.  To use him effectively you have to understand all sorts of orb setups and charge setups, and you have to be able to use the setups effectively to make him any sort of good.  You have to have a strong understanding of spacing and placement, and that kind of thing only comes with experience.  He's basically one of the worst characters (along with others like Aoko or F Akiha) for a beginner to be able to just pick up and understand high level play easily.  They're just too complicated.

The best character for a beginner to pick up is the character you like best at first sight. Start learning the game with him/her/it, before proceeding on to tier-whoring for wins  ;D

I usually stick with my first character as the main though (character designs matter more than tier rankings for me).

I'm going to have to agree with Loli. I wouldn't recommend C-Roa to someone looking for an easy character to learn.

@Sevalle: Because Tier whoring is totally necessary in melty. :V

I think "best" is reliant on what you can already do from other games, If you already have a good execution, then one of the more execution heavy characters with a simple game plan might be good. Or if you're used to only being able to go one way down the gatling chain an F-character could be good. If you have terrible execution you could play KOUMA, or someone that uses a simple launcher j.bc j.bc air-throw combo. If you're BRAND new to 2D fighters then try Shiki or a Nanaya, they can get you familiar with all the game mechanics, but he only one you'll have to REALLY practice at first is re-beating.

tl;dr Play to your strengths in  previous fighting game experiences.

For whatever reason I was thinking about this today, C-Wara seems like he'd be one of the more ideal characters to start with since his normals are pretty strong in the general context of Melty footsies.  He's got a fairly strong anti-air in 2B, his j.B is pretty good air to air, and he's got decent tools in 5B, tornadoes, and summons for controlling the ground.

Also, between Nero set-ups and air throw/j.421C finishers you get to experiment with the higher damage/better oki exchange, getting a decent grasp of when you want one or the other (not that this is entirely specific to Wara, but it is a basic part of his game).

I would think that having a firm grasp on those facets of his gameplay would give you a solid foundation for picking up basically any other character, or for going even further in depth with Warachia stuff if that's the route you choose to take.

I still find Nanaya easier for a new player to pick up, considering he has very good normals and with the usual dp and stuff.

C-roa is not good for beginners (in fact, I probably shouldn't even play him), my bitching about him is the stuff of infamy, but I'll try to keep that out of it.

The basic problem with C-Roa is that in addition to a game of melty blood you need to play two side games of resource management and bookkeeping, those orbs and lighting charges aren't free; you need to give stuff up for them.

He's got low damage without meter, lightning, or orb setups; and if you want free TK orbs or orb>lightning charge you need to give up even more  damage and go for a combo ending in 2C trip for knockdown. In addition to having to give stuff up and work for your resources you can lose them easily; getting knocked down wipes out your orbs, and you lose all your lightning whenever you use it in a combo or a setup. You also need to work for orb activations, it's not like Aoko where you just negative edge them, you gotta input it again and do an animation to set them off. Orb combos are hard and you need the perfect setup to do them.

When you add in stuff like his near-zero crossup potential, and his air-blockable DP you get a character that's not friendly towards anyone in general.

That said he's awesome, he has awesome combos, and his 236C is some sexy shit.
Combos so bright I gotta wear shades.

Wara's just a very average character. He has o.k everything but it comes at the cost of nothing being that good and you have to put in extra effort to make some of it work.

He's not terribly complicated but I don't think I would say he's the best idea for a beginner, considering there are even easier characters that are just better. You also really need to be able to do consistent iads with him and newcomers to melty often have issues with that.

Most people will simply say Nero, not Nrvnqsr. It's how it's pronounced, anyway. (Go play Tsukihime if you want to know why.)

That said, I do agree with initially picking who you like best, though a lot of characters are very complex and hard to grasp initially. I've heard fairly consistently that Tohno and Nanaya are decently beginner-frirendly, Ciel as well. Half of Melty's game is learning the mechanics, then half of the other half is learning opponents, and the other half of that other half is learning the character you pick yourself and getting them into good little combos or effective positions or whatever. All easier said than done, of course.

Me, I personally pick C-Akiha most of the time, but I have no idea where that lays on the "pick up and play" table.

Full Nanaya is the easiest character to pick-up-and-play in this game bar none.

Yesterday I got three SF4 players who had never seen melty blood before and only heard of it in he SRK vote to play some melty. After about a minute of coaching they were doing rekkas into dive kick mixups, fastfall tricks and blockstrings.

That's because Full Nanaya is the most like a Street Fighter character out of everyone in the game. Yang rekka, Dive kicks into Akuma mixups, and a Shoryuken.

This is true, mainly if your really a beginner then it' all about learning the actual mechanics of the game.  I mean just for me it took me a couple weeks to know all of the stuff.  But if your a SF player then F-Moon would a good startup because learning F-Moon characters is kinda like SF based(this is just my opinion of coarse).

Also Nrvnqsr Chaos= NEVER SCARED!Chaos!!  :toot:
