Keyboards for tournaments: Yes or No?
« on: September 12, 2007, 07:18:11 AM »
Ok, it's become increasingly apparent that there are an actual (GROWING) number of people out there that play MB:AC on keyboard now that it's back to its 'pc roots'. Hell, even MB at EVO had a keyboard player (to the dismay of a few folks).

But what do you guys think? Should it be a tournament standard to allow keyboards for use or should they be banned?

I'm personally against their use.

Discuss ;p?

Meh people should be able to use whatever they want... as long as they don't bring something weird like a DDR pad...
There's nothing to fear now.

Dude! Didn't you know that its been my dream to play a fighting game with a ddr pad?!

Okay, seriously, if people wanna play keyboard its their money they're wasting. Its like consciously deciding to use a bottom tier character. Sure, you can win with keyboard, but its 100x harder than just using a stick or a pad.

If people use them, let them use use them. Their choice.
Playing: Arc, Kouma

American Tierlist:
Top: players just play the fucking game instead of asking for tiers. Low: players ask for tiers.

There's no feasible reason to disallow keyboards. The argument of possible cheating is more or less bullshit. There are ways to prevent and monitor any and all possible forms of cheating via a keyboard.

Note: This does not make up for the fact that keyboards are a pain in the ass to setup and an eyesore.

you can let them, but it'll just be too much lol :/

and, there's also a reputation to hold(or something like that).. It just looks bad to have someone using a keyboard. D:

Heh, but I guess to each their own, or something, atleast it makes it easier for other people to beat on him/her.

Apparently, you people haven't gone up against a good keyboard user yet. :V

As for the topic at hand, it really doesn't matter to much to me, though I tend to agree with Magz:

For purposes of principle, I ban keyboards from West Toasts since some of them were run on PS2, some on PC, and in the future (if ver.C ever comes out on Arcade/PS2), there won't be any people left behind again. Also, the process to disable certain inputs or to make sure that the keyboard player receives P1/P2 side is, as magz said, a royal pain in the ass, and that's time better spent keeping the tournament running smoothly instead. However, they're allowed for casuals on-site.

I learned to play default keyboard controls and adapted at EVO because I wanted the tournament to run as smoothly as possible and I didn't want to whine about not having the patch. I can now play both controls (1P & 2P) to the same degree as my old custom controls.

Keyboard users aren't handicapped at all, in fact some difficult techniques are easier to pull of on keyboard. Veteru and I were having some keyboard duels (both of us on keyboards) and something I can do on keyboard easily that is very difficult to do on stick is TK 7 ribbons with Akiha.

I also have this stupid dream of going to Tougeki though so I've started to learn stick. I mean it sounds pretty stupid that I want to play Melty competitively with a keyboard. Everyone should pick up a pad at least and if you've got the money, go for a stick 'cause going at it in the arcades is what it's really about.

EDIT: Clarified a few things that seemed vague.

Then you need to show up with a keyboard bag strapped behind your back just for show. Represent your fellow keyboard players!

My issue with keyboard is that it's far too easy for the player on the keyboard to hit the other players controls, either intentionally or not.

If it wasn't for that I wouldn't really care.

Well Tom is banning it from WT tournaments, and I'm 100% sure it will be banned at W2Z from now on. It's also banned from NEC8.

Are we going to work on a tournament standard or should we keep discussing it @_@?

.... How much would you like to bet?  =p

Sorry for thread derailing.    :psyduck:

I think keyboards should be allowed, it's just a handicap for us right?

I think keyboards should be limited to the one that's plugged in though, no unplugging/replugging.  If it's a laptop, probably stuck using pad.

Well I don't care what Tom does (that's a lie, I'm aiming for a tournament standard here), but if you keyboard commandoes ever come over to the EC you're royally boned. I say ditch that shit already.

The issue with keyboards, is to many keys avaliable for macros, thats so easily solved. You guys do realize I could make a Keyboard stick ehehehe, with just the keys you use, take out all others ones, so that would be completely legal, and nice to look at, though I'd still never use it.

I dunno why people insist on kb controls, but I personally, have no problem with people using em, I think they should be allowed as a tournament standard. Just same rules apply. However I agree with Chibi, we need to decide 100% on one standard, either way I am using stick, so I am not worried, but I would prefer that everyone is in the same page, then hopelessly lost  :slowpoke:.

If you have a keyboard with everything disabled except your character's controls then you can use it.  Keep in mind you might need to switch between player 1 and player 2 side.  For casuals I don't care.

And DDR pads are allowed if there is enough room.

Enforcing the use of pelican ps2 converters(provided by tournament organizer) is something I've considered, but I'd rather not go that way unless its necessary.

Keyboard >>>>> pad > stick btw.
