I'd like it if you guys didn't argue about whether keyboard/stick is better in this thread, do it somewhere else

A quick tip for dps. Most games will lets you do a 236236 or 6236 for a dp. Can help you with them until you  want to do them properly. Its also easy on a square gate. Just press forward, then do a fireball, but jam the stick into the corner of the square gate so you do get a forward input. viola dp motion

Another problem that I had when first transitioning was with my right hand. When you hit the buttons make sure you don't hold them down, it will screw your combos up. You don't actually "press" the buttons you tap them and move your finger off. With this also comes the tendency to hit extra buttons for a combo that you don't need, since melty likes clean inputs; just hit the buttons you need, no more.

I'm actually surprised there are still so many non-stick players, logically if you consider fighting games originally designed to be played on an arcade stick layout then it'd be the best way to play them.

It's not logical to assume that just because it was designed to be played on a stick that that's the best option.  For an easy example fighting games aren't designed to be played with turbo controllers but there is the obvious benefit to using one.

For a laptop?

I like to carry a USB keyboard if I have space for it. Personally, I can't play any game with my laptop keyboard. The keys aren't comfortable enough for me.

I just tried using a stick I bought a long time ago but neglected using because of giving up but recently picked up again because this thread has sparked my interest in trying again. And I just found a neat tip for anyone having trouble with special inputs.

In the case below, I was trying to input a 214B but just couldn't get it to come out right and almost always getting 2B instead. I turned input display on and here's what I got:

In the case on the left, it shows that I pressed the B button a teeny weeny bit too early, during when I input the 1 direction, which resulted in the 4 direction in the 214 to not be read. This causes the game to read the input as 21B, not a complete 214B, and a 21B results in just 2B, thus F-ing up everything up.

To solve this, I delayed my B button press a teeny weeny bit which resulted in my button press to be right when (or after) I input 4, resulting in a complete 214B, as shown in the case on the right.

Hope this helps someone.
