So i never really thought much about shielding, until I played someone by the name of Slowpoke who punished me for 3k+ after a successful shield. How did he do this? It wasnt a shield bunker and it appeared he 2C'd me.

And in addition, what are the benefits of shielding that would make you use it over blocking, shield bunker, or using a DP?

lol slowpoke

Most risky, most benefiting mechanic at least in Full Moon styles since you can do 236D when successfully shielding a hit to immediately execute a counter hit which launches your opponent so you can connect a combo afterwards which can easily result in 3000+ damage.

H-Moons autocounter upon successful shield, however they can only execute ex-shields, unlike F-Moon which can only execute shields. C-Moon can execute both but you have to manually input the counter move.

What rowan just said is mostly right but cmoon cannot do shield counter followups.

I love CMoon shield. You get to freeze them up for like 4 frames or something like that so you can giggle if you have a 4 frame (including first frame) attack.

Err for c-moon.
If you ex-shield you can input either a Normal, Special or super.
For regular shield you can only input a special or super.

I mean you have to input 236A or sth for shield and 5A for EX-Shield etc.

I don't know if this is the right way to explain it, but the way I understand shields is that when you successfully shield, the opponent behaves as if they hit something, so they go into their hit-stun animation, while you do not (or can cancel out of it) and have some invuln frames to input a move that will counter. EX-Shields have more invuln, I think.

C-Moon does whatever on EX-Shields, and special or super cancels on regular shield. H-Moon auto counters, or manual counters/special/super cancels vs projectiles, and F-Moon manual counters or special/super cancels. This stuff usually leads to a counter hit, or an untechable launch, both of which are comboable at prorated damage, unlike shield bunkers.

If you know they are doing a frame trap or staggering predictably, you can use shield, among other things, during the gaps. Also, shields are easy to time vs meaties on wake-up, and IAD resets. However, they are also easily baited. Some moves need to be shielded multiple times before countering.

In a lot of cases, it's difficult to reversal during pressure b/c you have to input directional motions. But, shielding is just hitting a button and doing a follow up counter. So a good answer to some char's pressure, like F-Warc, is to shield it.

I'm just trying to think of more places where shields are commonly useful...

I've seen people use shields in awkward situations where players aren't sure who has advantage, or as an 'oh shit, I just fucked that up/miss-spaced that!' button to 'avoid' miss-timed punishes.

If you put out some move that covers a certain space, they reacted and spaced around it, and you are now at disadvantage where hitting an attack button will lose, but you know they will hit an attack button to counter you, you can shield it and counter.

Can you cancel C Shield into Exshield? I remember doing that in MBAC for multihit moves so I get to be lazy with autoshield and so I can lame out and still get Exshield options.

You can as far as I know. It is possible to fully shield Wara's j.c but it takes a lot of practice.

Multi-shielding is very 3rd strike. Fun things to shield:
Ciel's Multi-knives
Neco's Lasers
Kohaku's Plants

In addition, you can Jump Cancel after an EX-Shield ;D. Try EX-shielding Kohaku's spinning plant and jump canceling out of there.

Since you were playing Slowpoke, I assume he did the F-Nero shield counter combo. F-Nero is an anomaly who can do more damage off a shield than his standard BnB. Most characters can't get that kind of damage off shield.

f-nero can get 5k off shield counter. He gets between 5-7k off traditional combos.

Slowpoke plays ryougi. Also fnero damage is generally low lol

For the shield counter combo he needs to do a tap shield instead of held shield counter or you cannot cancel into a special iirc

Full Moon shield dash cancel

Can anyone explain this?

Is it a 1 frame shield? You can probably do 6D~AB and have that happen.
: Re: Shielding
: Numakie July 14, 2012, 01:40:59 PM
Seems like a 1 frame shield. I tested against a Hisui Book (214a>6)

After a 1 frame shield, I did 6A+B with some success.
Doesn't work with a held shield though.

It's the same trick Kusanagi did during Evo2010 against Garu with that shield throw as HAoko, then, I guess.

That is something I'll have to try out with C moon. Shield backdash could be interesting.
