When's Melty on Steam?
ahaha that's no--wait, what?
-
Yo. I started a similar thread over at Dustloop and figured I would try it here. So what do you use to play MBAC? Stick, pad, or keyboard?
I play pad at the moment.
-
I got into Melty not too long ago and I've found using stick is more natural.
-
Both but more familiar and natural with Pad
-
Stick. Preferably Sanwa, but I can handle HAPP.

KEYBOARD SMASHER

Stick.
-
i play pad...mb is the only game that i cannot play on stick..but im working on that
-
I play pad cause it's cheaper than buying and learning to play stick. :V
-
I used to play stick, while I was training to not suck when I visited Japan. Didn't help, and incidentally that was basically the last time I touched stick.
-
power glove
-
Playing a fighter with a power glove would be freaking BADASS.
-
KEYBOARD CRUSHER... currently transitioning to stick.
-
Pad, though I wish I had a stick of my own so I can do more combos at the actual arcades.
Playing a fighter with a power glove would be freaking BADASS.
So would doing Hisui's arc drive require me to swing my arms around in front while saying "SATOODAAAY NAYTOOOO FEEEEEVAAAAAAA!!!"?

Do want. But really, the Power Glove is too unresponsive to work that well for a fighter.

The best keyboard user in existance.
EDIT: No wait thats Emil. :(

Stick

Hori Stick
If need be though, i can be a Pad Warrior.
-
Started D-Pad controller, Half Circles were a pain.
Play on Hori sticks. Will get one of my own eventually...
Strength cut in half if on HAPP.

I'm much more comfortable with a pad, but I recently invested in a VSHG. It's pretty sexy, actually. I just wish I was more accustomed to it. As is I almost got the hang of it but lots of random shit tends to come out from time to time XD
-
My stores suck at having sticks or converters, and I can't buy internet things, so....keyboard. And I like it.

LIES. I don't see how it is possible for anyone to do a 10-second Len against Black G 666 using a keyboard. :mystery:

It is very possible. Keyboards aren't nearly as bad as people think they are.

It all comes down to what you are used to playing imo. :blah:

Werd. I refuse to come to the fact that I am going to be shitty player "because you can't play stick". That is the most retarded thing I have ever heard.

well on some level there is legitimacy to the claim. granted i'm not in a position to tell you guys how to play this game (especially since it's officially been only 3 days since i was introduced to the game). in the grand scheme of things, it IS a fighting game we're playing....a genre of game well-known for having mainly been using an arcade-style stick to control. it just feels more authentic IMO.
one example i can give is, say, Capcome vs. SNK 2 for xbox/ps2/gc (whatever floats your boat). in my case, it just didn't feel right playing it on a Controller S. i then proceeded to buy one of those Street fighter AC arcade stick, and even a stick like that is more of an improvement over the pad.
but at the same time, i can sympathize with the idea of playing on a pad. i myself have been using an xbox360 pc pad to play the game.....well only because i don't want to go through the effort of figuring out how to set up my tekken5 AE stick on my comp LOL. but in any case i guess i've been able to play the game fine with the pad. i guess what it boiled down to was the fact that MB isn't the typical 6-button-style game that would utilize a traditional arcade stick.
-
I play on Pad and Kinda play on stick ... My execution is far better on pad than stick but i love stick because no sore thumbs and wrist pains.
I dont really know why i cant play MB on stick it must be japanese style sticks ... i have no problem playing Tekken and Soul Caliber at the arcades. . . well i lied i have troubble with Tekken 5 since the cabs use japanese style sticks ... back in the tekken 4 and tag days it was NP, for Tekken 5 i had to be halfassed and use a pad for directionals and using the arcade buttons <.<

not really, it comes down to what you are used to playing.
Some people just don't like the "feel" of a stick which is why they stick to a pad. If a stick is always better than you should automatically be able to improve your execution by switching to a stick.
What I mean is, say you are playing Street Fighter on your brand new SNES. You got your quarter circles and dragon punches down pat.(for this example we'll assume you've never played the arcade cabinet). You go to your local arcade expecting to put up a decent match only to find that your Hadu has no ken, and your Dragon is hardly punchy. In this case the pad is far better than the stick because the user is used to it and is comfortable with the muscle memory. I've seen plenty of pad players that could kick the shit out of a lot of stick players. It just has to do with what they are used to using.
I am one of the people that prefers the stick controls, but I disagree that a more "authentic" feel is better than something that will give you(just you personally" better execution.
Obviously if you get used to a stick and only play on it, it will be much better than a pad FOR YOU, not necessarily person X.
-
8 out of 10 times, if you commit to a stick, you will be a superior fighter,
simply because of the range of motion a stick provides, also for button combinations its also more reliable, and easer to use.
It comes down the whatever YOU practice in the most, aka most comfortable with.
-
I can play stick and keyboard....and I'm actually better with the keyboard.
Keyboard inputs are more accurate, and it's easier to do moves like 2C > 6B without triggering 236B, so it works better for me on complicated combos such as Arc's wallslam combo, which can accidentally trigger special moves if not done properly.
On the downside, movements are more clumsy with the keyboard. It's very tiring to play characters that are fast such as V Akiha and Sion.(I like Sion, but Miyako and Hisui are my main.)
-
I am keyboard crusha
-
The only reason you guys are good in keyboard, is because you practiced it.
This is becoming redudant, no one is arguing keyboard or pad are bad choices, there is someone out there that can beat me on stick, with those two mediums, however if we take into consideration. Stick has the highest potential out of all 3. I am scrub, and I can pull any move without messing up on the stick, pro players will own your soul, and if we get equal talanted, which is impossible but lets pretend or use close examples, like top tier japanese players. Any pad or keyboard player would lose.
Bet on it.
Its all about ergonomics, range of motion, reflex speed, a joystick makes all those easer to do. Keyboard will fatigue you, despite being accurate, its also not ergonomic,
a pad is sometimes somewhat ergonomic but by limited and forcing you to grip the pad, your already using tension, and fatiguing the player.
A stick needs small flicks, and two hands are being used, much more comfortable, once and if netplay becomes stable and quick, and I practice this game enough, Ill open challenge any keyboard or pad player to a 1 on 1.
Believe it ;)

heh i guess that's the reason why pad controller ports are included in the tekken dark resurrection arcade cabinet we have over at school. i actually haven't bothered checking to see if pad ports are in the MBAC cab that we have here though.
-
pad for me, although i really wish i was better with a stick. It just seems like i would unlock some super-secret crushing hidden skill i hold inside of myself if i used stick....or at least that seems to be the general consensus everywhere.
-
Bet on it.
I will.
Believe it ;)
I don't.

The perfect controller gives fast access to every input available. Regardless of this, a player is best off with whatever controller they are most familiar with within certain limits. An extreme example is if a DDR player decides to pick up fighters they aren't going to be doing their best by playing on a DDR pad. As long as you are executing everything you want reliably, then your choice of controller is fine.
A custom keyboard that requires very little force and movement to press a key is about the best example of a perfect controller that I can think of. Like a custom stick with more buttons in place of the actual stick, however standard stick buttons are too large. 10 Keys aligned to fingertips, leaves one for each direction and six attack/action buttons, which I believe is enough for every commercial fighter to date.
-
that would be one awkward setup to get used to... :psyduck: :slowpoke:

Playing with pad, might get a stick some time.. If I ever find one :slowpoke:

Actually, playing MBAC on a DDR pad does not sound too bad theoratically... it could potentially be a new and innovative way of playing the game?

I'm using pad at the moment.

Good luck playing a 1337 Satsuki or VAkiha without a stick :P
I can do Satsuki's combo motions perfectly with pad and still fail horribly due to the fact that only using your thumb sucks for fighting games.
It's a whole different story on my VSHG. Fingers FTW!

PLUS A GREAT WAY TO BURN CALORIES!!!!!!!

You will have lots of fun doing BNBs on a DDR pad. :V
-
Using a pad right now but very seriously considering getting a stick. Pads give blisters and swollen wrists, :'( vastly reducing effective practice time.
As for which is better consider playing an FPS between a pad and mouse and keyboard. I will admit there are some pretty badass Halo players (one of my friends is obsessed with Halo 2) however a mouse and keyboard setup provides quite a few more advantages and at a high level of competition this definitely comes into play. The same is true about pads and sticks, although the point at which the advantages start to make a difference won't come up with 90% of players as there isn't a huge advantage with a stick.
At least thats how I see it.
-
Pad. I haven't played many arcade games and I
never leave my house have been a console gamer for the longest time.
It's all about personal preference. I'll get around to trying MB with a stick eventually.

Seconded. Why limit yourself to just one thumb when you can use all of your fingers? As an example, I find it much easier to do Kohaku's BNB with 5c(one hit) 5B j.c B etc. on an arcade stick as opposed to pad, where I have to be satisfied with the inferior 5c(all hits) j.c B.
-
Bodypad!!
-
Don't have an arcade around here. Never got used to stick. I play pad for now. Might transition eventually, if I decide it's worth the money.
-
so I downloaded MAME at work where I only have access to a keyboard and omfg I hate it with a fiery passion. HOW THE HELL DO YOU GUYS DO CONSISTENT COMBOS ON THIS GARBAGE???!?!?!?!?!??!!
-
What's it doing? Lag spikes?

We learned how to play on a keyboard.
That's how.
-

nah I just miss quarter circles a lot, and dragon punches....... and double quarter circles.......oh well, all will be ok when I get my stick, MULTI HURRY!!!!!!!!!! :emo:
-
i just switched to pad from keyboard and it feels really uncomforatble and im pissed for paying 20 dollars for it >:[. But i think ima stick to it cause peopel said it has more potential than keyboard? true? o_o
-
General consensus says anything > keyboard. I say use whatever.
-
currently pad, when i get ps2 to usb converter it will be stick :D
-
I'm they keyboard player of WA for both melty blood and guilty gear :3
-
After playing stick for a month or two now it's become alot more comfortable. Certain things on pad just because troublesome, even though my movement was better on a pad. Still, loving stick now, and wouldn't go back.
;p
-
The new 360 Guitar Hero controller has a D-pad on it.
I'm thinking about playing Melty on that.
-
Tilt the guitar up to activate heat?
-
Epic.
I used to use keyboard until I got the hang of my pad. My thumbs do not forgive me, however.
-
mmmm multiplat arcade sticks are a god-send. i have a generic xbox-usb converter that actually works and have been playing mbac on it for a few days.
-
Hey guys, I've been looking for a stable but inexpensive stick to last me a PS2 converter.
I've been looking for the Hori Fighting stick 2s without any luck, and the CD Japan FightStick for PS3 doesn't look to be PS2 compatible.
If you can find me something online for <50$ or around that price range, I'd really appreciate it. PS2 pad... used it in the past, never again. However, I can't get a Real Arcade Pro or the Fight Stick Pro (> 90$)

I was in your same situation when I got my stick. I paid attention to eBay for 1.5 weeks or so until I managed to score a Tekken 5 collectors edition set in new condition (including game) for $40+$10 shipping. I need to sell the game still, I'm going to sell the game to my friend for $10 next time I see him.
Pros of the stick: Pretty solid, large (i prefer it that way), heavy enough to not move around.
Cons: Not easy to mod/replace parts if anything goes wrong. Buttons are hori ones of medium quality. As long as you don't abuse it, they *should* last a long time though.
-
Stick!I'm more natural with pad in other fighters though>.>
Edit: Actually I founded out my controller is more like a ps2 controller. So pad with this stick thingymabobber!0_0

Big metal DDR pad at my freinds house. works if you can move FAST.

I used to use keyboard( i can only play nice with Wara with the keyboard) but the controls get all mixed up, i mean the inputs, f.e: with wara i do 2.C > 2.B > 2.CC > 'launcher' but in the keyboard most of the times i do 236.C cause the input time is much acurate and faster : |. The same thing with the game-pad it works but im not fast enough with the input and the combo doesnt conect, lack of practice imo :slowpoke: Anyway i got used to game-pad, with the practice the input became faster but i still cant play right with Wara with game-pad lol :mystery: Sooo...lol...currently i play and prefer gamepad, no more finger pain ;p

[off topic]-.-'' i was giving and exemple of a simple combo with Wara(lol and the 2.C is actually a 2.A :p) 2.A > 2.B > 2.CC > 6.C <--- Wara's 'Launcher'[/off topic]

its only 1 2C not 2.CC its 2C(#) for # of hits 2CC is too confusing, its liek saying Ciels 2CC launcher :/

Keyboard. I've been trying some Logitech Gamepad, but it just doesn't feel right. :psyduck:

I just recently got my PS controller adapter and it's pretty cool. I don't use analog stick though because I find pretty hard to defend and dash around with it. You can easily do half and quarter circles with the directional pad. Btw, how the hell do you perform Kohaku's Drug-on Install? The instructions for it are just weird. Pretty much impossible to do with the pad and the stick doesn't help either.

its a raging storm pretzel motion, haven't you ever played geese?
-
I managed to pull it off twice with my directional pad. I'm not quite sure how I did it but it was like, From back to front half circle, then from front to back, then from back to front.
