When's Melty on Steam?
ahaha that's no--wait, what?
: what should i do with out competition?
: THCxWADE November 16, 2010, 11:55:29 AM
okay,

i dont live in a major city, or near anyone who plays meltyblood at all.
i really like this game, it has things alot of other fighting games don't.

but im not into "casual" play but there is no competition. theres the bi-weekly in brooklyn (im in central PA so thats not gonna happen) even if i did go i'd get scrubbed out immediately since i have no human being to practice with. (i also wouldn't have anyone for 2v2, since its just me)
and i can't go to NEC because i have a test that day.
my method of play is also different. im playing on a hard-modded 360 pad (its way better then normal, almost better then a fight pad) on my PC.

so what should i do? i have no competition, no modded ps2, no ps2 arcade stick, all i have is the will to learn and combo perseverance (since all i do is practice combos)

Read. Watch. Play. Playplayplayplayplayplayplayplayplayplayplayplayp layplayplayplayplayplayplayplayplayplayplayplaypl ayplayplayplayplayplayplayplayplayplayplayplaypla yplayplayplayplayplayplayplayplayplayplayplayplay .

A good start for a better opponent without an opponent in MBAA is by training in Boss Rush Mode instead of normal training mode. You learn combos by watching other players. Learn the insight by studying the wiki. Discuss on the forums. Ask. Try. Play.
I too have noone to play with. And I still play Melty on a daily base just to don't lose the hang of it. I train, I STILL try to develop or extend combos. For months now.

Once you've finally got ur combos down you can crank up the difficulty to very hard and have a go at survival mode.
Its the closest to fighting a real player u'll get while playing by urself, as the pc wont be shy about ex sheilding and interrupting ur combos.

I have to agree with boss rush mode. They're way better than the standard AI even on the highest difficulty setting. They can combo reliably, mixup, exert pressure, etc.. I've lately been using them to work on my throwbreaking.

: LoliSauce November 16, 2010, 04:46:05 PM
Boss Rush is not a good training partner.  I beat it by throwing all of the enemies (with the exception of Dust and gAkiha, which can be AI exploited in other ways) repeatedly.  It falls the the same AI abuse as normal play.

If you want the best practice without a partner to play, watch high level videos and use ALL of the tools available in training mode to emulate the things you watch.
1. Practice combos.  Reliable execution is an easy way to step up your game.
2. Set the dummy to Crouch, Guard All, and Recover A.  Practice staggers in blockstrings to beat mashing.
3. Set the dummy to Crouch, Guard All.  Practice longer blockstrings including blockstring resets and mixups within blockstrings.
4. Record blockstrings that you see other players do for the Dummy, and practice how to defend and escape them.
5. Practice okizeme mixups, both after a BnB and after a random far range sweep.
6. Record the dummy to do wakeup reversal or mash 2A or shield.  Now after you sweep them, you can try to find out different methods of baiting it out (as if you were going to do oki mixups) and punishing.
7. Learn about option selects, how to use them, and what to use them against.  Use Dummy mode to practice.

When watching videos, the most important thing is to try and understand WHY the high level players do what they do.  Pay attention to everything: their movement patterns, when they use each normal, how they get out of pressure, how they make use of meter, etc.

Come to St1ckbug's tournament and start asking around for gatherings and all that, you'll get help.

any AI is arguably a bad training partner if you abuse its flaws lol

things that the AI is good for is practicing your hit confirms and zoning.

i dunno about practicing pressure or working on your defense though

Here's my thoughts on boss rush, aside from it being AI and thus stupid.

Wara: Throwbreak practice, IAD mixup practice
Miyako: Throwbreak practice, Baiting practice
WLen: Frametrap practice
Aoko: Zoning practice, anticipating overheads
KohaMech: More Zoning practice
The rest, I don't know. All of them also have shield counters since they're eclipse style so you can try to bait them.

MBAC Netplay. :)
Imo, that's how Kusa placed so well.

It helped me a ton, although that may be due to the fact that my main (Hisui&Kohaku) didn't change very much from MBAC to MBAA.

I also dont have anyone near me,so I netplay MBAC,but I guess it's tougher for you, since america doesnt netplay AC anymore.

Uhm.

theres the bi-weekly in brooklyn (im in central PA so thats not gonna happen)

Though it might be tedious, I was using a weird hybrid of AC netplay and practice on AA. It helped, though I'm not sure how to gauge the effect it had on my playing, since I am in a similar situation.

He beat us because he plays a lot of MBAC netplay and has great fundamentals and execution, not because of Boss Rush :V

Both of which Kusa also possesses, so don't take his reply seriously either.

If you don't have competition then Find/Make some; you'd be surprised how many people play fighting games (especially now that super is such a monster), and often they'll either play Mb, something similar, or be more than willing to learn with you.

trying to do this requires such dumbing down of your play to not piss new people off it's so frustrating though. And then people get too lazy to put effort in anyway...almost worse trying than just grinding practice mode, at least the training dummy doesn't keep asking to play something else.

like seriously, practically everyone I've ever succeeded at getting to try the damn game can't chain into ANYTHING even after I try and give them advice and never blocks no matter how much you politely suggest it. Most people who actually have the drive to learn games are usually so dedicated into their own game it's difficult to make them really care too.

Go to meets anyway though...they are fun as fuck once you get to know some people and goof off, shit isn't all just about playing videogames.

thats a good idea and should be tested ofr example as i did here (argentina) the outcome was very surprising we are going around the 3rd tourney and still more people are coming.

in other words thats the best solution for this matter :V

do you think playing net play would help some?

or is just playing hella bosh rush enough, for training until i can play in real life.
: Re: what should i do with out competition?
: Komidol December 09, 2010, 03:10:08 AM
What Coren & LoliSauce said.  You can resort to Boss Rush if you have to (it works for some people, but you'll have to play footsies with it and NOT just exploit the AI).  Lolisauces recommendation for abusing the hell out training mode is the best option if you plan to sit at home, but if you're in Central PA you're not far off at all from a melty scene.  There were tournaments just recently, you'd have to make a real effort to get out to them (a lot of players do, most tournaments easily run you 100$).  Playing melty - or any game - competitively is just a commitment you will have to make sacrifices for (like any major hobby, such as a sport).

The only remaining alternative I know is to start getting equipment together and promoting the game yourself in your area.  The easiest way is talk to other local fighting gamers in your area but anyone enthusiastic enough about MB to learn how to play is fine.  Saying "I don't have a mod, or a stick, or a PS2" is just saying I don't have the game.  You can't play a game you don't have.  There are several knowledgeable people about how to OBTAIN those items right here in this thread if you're willing to ask and put out a little bit of time and money.  It's actually not that expensive to get the game via a modded memory card and disk so long as you a normal PS2 already.  As far as a stick, you don't *need* one, especially when starting, infact the runner up to NECXI in both teams and singles had pad players (though I personally would recommend one).  So you're really not far off from "having the game" but you will need the game to promote it and find competition, or just to outright play before going to competitive events you CAN make it out to.

If you're willing to grind out training mode all day and you get spacing fundamentals from other games or bossrush, that might work (it did for Kusanagi, who placed 3rd in Evo as mentioned above), but playing on the PC isn't going to help you at all because the buffer is affected by your computer and the timing on combos will not be the same.  MBAC Netplay...I don't feel like this is going to significantly help you either.  I don't see what else we could really help you out with  :o

Netplay will help to a certain extent even though MBAC is different from MBAA. But it still helps in fighting against other human players.

Just that when switching back to MBAA, there are quite a few things to look out for.

I find that MBAC helps me in training my offensive approaches as there is no guard gauge so people could just block indefinitely if you are not throwing them.

Well just my 2 cents worth of opinion, having some improvements is better than have none.
