get a stick either a 360 for like $80 someone posted some, or the wii one and mod it like $40 bucks plus parts to convert and mod.

as far as pads go PS2 get a pelican adapter anything else, until then stick with keyboard at least in my opinion keyboard>>>xbox 360 controller.

Use whatever you're comfortable with.  Most people use a ps2 controller (usually a stick, couple pads) with a converter.  If you have money to spend try everything out and use what you like.  If you're only getting one then go by past experience.

I got mine(pelicans) from amazon.com, but I'm not sure if they still have them.

Pelicans go for like 50+ dollars right now, just buy an ex2 for like 40$'s from ebay.

Since ps3 controllers are already usb can't you just plug it in to a computer?  If that doesn't work you might need special drivers or joy2key usage which wouldn't go well in tournaments but would work for at home.

Yes, as a matter of fact you can use a PS3 controller via USB cable.

I used a DS3 in the past, you can find the driver needed by searching google.... however:

1: Before each use you need to load the driver
2: MB/IaMP/SWR/etc. does not recognize the maping well, you'll need to use Xpadder or Joy2Key to set up the buttons
:: If you do this, netplay works fine but if you want to play by your self, you need to unplug the controller, load MB then plug it back in since MB will try to load the controller as a pad and jack everything up.
3: Feels good but NOT build to last, Broke mine in 4 months of fighting games. (buttons require more force, '6' direction has snapped off)
:: Plus the inside is weird so you cannot fix it yourslef.

Just get a DualShock2, half the cost, half the pain and it will work for double the time. All you need is a adaptor.
(yea, I go through controllers like hot cakes)
They can't get enough of me

I use a PS2 Controller, I bought an adaptor from amazon (Twin USB) and it works great. Just Plug it in and play.
The only problem with it is some unoffical Sony Controllers work and also PSX controllers work.
Here are two links:
