What not to do when netplaying
« on: September 10, 2007, 07:12:52 PM »
  • Don't use a wireless connection.
  • Don't run torrents while playing.
  • Don't run a million programs in the background.
  • Don't bitch about how you lost because of lag. Deal with it. Its just netplay. No one cares.
  • Don't be HarmanSmith.

Thanks.

If you're having frame rate problems and the ping looks ok, try to get the person with the better computer to host(aka don't host on a laptop).
Choose a stage with a static background, like any Tohno Mansion stage.  Avoid the animated ones like Warc's, Shiki's, Sion's etc.

What does laptop have to do with it?
As long as your plugged in, I don't think it's a problem. Especially with recent laptops nowadays sporting core duos.
Unless they're running on wireless...

Laptops are less powerful than desktops in general.  This is not always the case granted, but in general an equal specced laptop is slower than a desktop.

Wireless is bad because while the speed might be fine, wireless routers will always have spikes, and its the spikes that are the most aggravating.  I'd rather play at 55 fps than 60 fps and have it spike every 10 seconds.  Of course wireless is better than no connection, but if you have a choice, try to get wired.

Desktops are always better that laptops no matter what ever your processer is, it going to run slower on a laptop. A pentium 4 1.8 Ghz is faster than a Celeron 2.5 just because it is poorly made and is made to run with less power. Running one program it is ok but more than one program or a high priority program (aka mbcaster) it will be slower. Also a laptop has to run more processes than a desktop. The fbs (frond-side bus speed) of a laptop is slower than on a desktop as well as the RAM. Laptop DDR2 (fastest RAM out for PC) runs at 400Mhz. while DDR2 for desktops runs at 533Mhz.
As for the wireless, my wireless MIMO runs at 1Gig a second and it runs just fine.(Faster and better than 100mb wired).

I've never ever had this problem occur with netplay.  Perhaps if your wireless router is made from a tin cigar case and paperclips as antennae it would spike every 10 seconds.  :-\

My laptop is faster than my Desktop(processing wise) both runing 400mhz FSB, my laptop is a dualcore turion and desktop is a single core Athlon 64 runing dual chanel memmory and OC'd to 2.5ghz(about 4000+speeds) .. the turion is just a simple dual 1.67ghz.

My laptop hosts very well especialy when setting the priority on MBCaster to higher than normal, doing this on my desktop just kills it.

btw, "good" desktops are runing 1.3ghs FSB and the most common FSB's are 667 and 800, not that its all that important with the right timings and settings theres allways a middle ground to be found.  theres also DDR3 which jumps up to about 1.8ghz for FSB ovbiously price vs performance vs size its not even worth it.

The comparisions are for comparable computers not with different cored processors the core is another processor so you are actually runing 2, 1.67ghz processors.
and DDR3 is only in video cards now.

Actually,Check there are some chipsets that support them too, they use the same 240 pin slots that DDR2 uses aswell.

I guess my comparison isnt valid since Turion cores do not exist for the desktop market, but what i said would be "valid" if you were looking at single and dual core athlon chips(turion is not quite an athlon 64) also Pentiums and celerons arent excactly the same core either.

Were going to endup going way off topic -_-.

I play a friend in SoCal flawlessly with only 1 frame of lag with a wireless connection.  Never had a problem at all.

  • Don't be Dipstick.

Fixed.

You're not supposed to do that offline either.

Laptops are not worse by default.  If you want to compare same price, yes they are worse, but if you're comparing same spec, they are the same.  If you want to say something like 'but laptops don't have this' then you aren't comparing the same specs.  That said, most of the time if you have both a laptop and a desktop, the desktop is going to be better unless its horridly outdated or bargain bin desktop vs best laptop you can get.
