BigBangBeat 2nd

So, Frontier Aja has announced that they're starting work on BBB2.  It looks like it's keeping the same mechanics, despite the new engine being built completely from scratch.  Here's to hoping for some serious improvements over the first installment (and since it's not being made by NRF, that's actually a possibility).

Before you get all uppity and label this prematurely as shit, lemme throw down some backstory that some of you might not know.

Frontier Aja was formerly a part of NRF, the creator of the original BBB (they also made MKV, but that was after the split).  After NRF gave up on BBB, the portion of the team that is now Frontier Aja wanted to continue work on it (building a netplay and further balancing, among other things), but the NRF head denied it (he sounds like an asshole).  This led them to split off into Frontier Aja.

Well, now that they had their own group and agenda, they could continue work on BBB right?  Well...unfortunately NRF had control of the license to the BBB engine and wasn't going to give that shit over for a winning ticket to the megabucks lottery (or whatever the Japanese equivalent of that might be).  So Frontier Aja said, "Fuck it, we'll build our own engine and just make the sequel!  That'll show those NRF pricks!"  Shortly after, they realized just how annoying making a fighter engine from scratch was.  This brought them to the realization that maybe they should take it slow.  Maybe build an easier engine like a side-scrolling platformer or some shit, you know?  Get some experience under their belt before they tackle the big boss at the end of that gay warping forest half way through the game.

That reference is unimportant.  What IS important is this spawned Koumajou Densetsu, aka Scarlet Symphony.  Why is this so significant?  Well, apart from it being a totally awesome Touhou themed Castlevania clone with minor danmaku elements, it showed that they actually paid attention to their international audience.  Frontier Aja's english spokesman was actively posting on the Doujinstyle forums asking for input and making announcements on new patches.  They even went so far to patch in an English (and French for that matter) translation for the game.  That, to me, is fucking amazing.

With that done, it appears they are finally confident enough to start work on BBB2.  I look forward to seeing what they manage to do with the game.

I knew all that am I special?

I haven't really bothered to get all that interested in this though, if only because its probably going to be quite awhile until its out. I am however looking forward to losing online a lot with Heita. I hope they fix up the special meter (not the super meter, the other one), after 1.1 (or whenever the horrid rape patches came in) it became really annoying managing the meter, especially if your name is Burai.

In other news I'm glad NRF decided to ditch BBB for the masterpiece that is MKV, that really worked out well for them.

Scarlet Symphony was great because it did a superb job of being a Castlevania game unlike that horrid abomination on the Wii.

The first BBB was pretty fun when it came out but oddly enough all the subsequent patches just made the game unfun to play. Hopefully the next one doesn't follow the same path.

That has to do with NRF not caring about BBB anymore and the split, but I don't remember the specifics anymore.

I doubt that'll be the case, since Frontier Aja cares a lot more about what the players/fans have to say.

Seriously.  I would say it's sad...but I have a pretty negative opinion of NRF at this point so I just laugh.

Looking forward to BBB2, really enjoyed the first game, the patches were meh though. Interesting concepts, poor execution, and terrible sorting of moves. Otherwise was a solid game. Especially pre 1.2

I agree.  I liked a lot of the characters, the dash cancel gave a lot of freedom in combos, and gaining stuff from the taunt made things interesting.  I hope they step it up with the sequel.

Touhouvania is pretty fun, but I hate how HUGE your hitbox is while flying (hueg box + slow flight + danmaku = haet).

Also Patchouli, I've never beaten her without randomly lucking out (Tips would be awesome, this makes me wanna cut myself).
Combos so bright I gotta wear shades.

Same here I'm looking forward for BBB2 and touhouvania.  The only thing that really bugged me from BBB were obviously the patches, but overall like a couple of you guys said...more freedom of doing combos and the dash canceling was epic(in my opinion).

Well, it looks like they're shooting to have a demo out by this winter comiket.  Seems like they're a little behind schedule, but I'm betting we see first full release of the game by next year's winter comiket.

And, apparently, by that much closer, you mean "a year or so to go at least."

This is massively barebones shit haha. It's more like an engine test than a game. "See, we got some frames and animations and shit!" Already some infinites found and some sillyass combos, but that's not really relevant.

Though I fully expect to see match videos of this, in its horribly unfinished, untested state, on serikamo's account shortly. Because he loves shit like that.

Oh, thanks Mauve.  I'm interested to see how the new engine is coming along.

A couple days ago I wanted to do another run around the doujin gaming blogs for updates, since it's been quite a few months since the last time I checked around.  I forgot about it by the time I got out of work, but this is a good reminder.  *thumbs up*
