Is anybody else here picking up Dark Souls? I am a huge huge huge Demon's Souls fan and am totally picking this up. (preordering the game nets you the fairly snappy looking collector's edition (http://www.preparetodie.com/en/preorder/))

Also, this dub of the newest trailer (http://www.tubedubber.com/#aRbbAv68rr8:BuCf5qG4gFI:0:100:0:49:true) is hilarious.

I don't plan on it for several reasons:

1: I don't own the system
2: I'm not particularly fond of the genre.

Yeah, I know what it would play like. From what I gather it's the exploration/RPG genre, I'm not saying it's bad but that I can only stomach it either with scifi or a higher magical content so I don't get bored from seeing bland rooms over and over.

And no, I don't own either.

ahahaha

I had a dex build char (dual uchigatanas, yum) so I needed one. After some reading and planning I went in with low-luck, pure black world tendency, no large sword of searching. This is because luck actually fucks up your chances of getting one.

Took about an hour and a half of grinding that one black skeleton.

..Worst part is, I still need a second one at some point for the other katana (it's a Moon+5 right now, and does less damage) but I can't be bothered to do it.

Is it fair to guess that you only play japanese rpgs and not something like, say, planescape torment?

Also I will probably be getting this on 360 since I think that what most of my friends will get it on. I hope the coop is a lot better in this one, since even doing coop in the last game felt like single player and you couldn't legitimately progress via coop, it only progressed the living player

googled planescape torment...   :V
....Even if it is a decent game, I refuse to play any RPG that could easily be named "Wizards and Goblins" and people not give it a second thought.  I did see that the game is very well accepted though, so I'm sure it's good. Just not something that I personally find interesting.

Anyways, it really doesn't matter to me what kind of RPG I play, as long as the game gives me a reason to spend 70+ hours with the characters I'm playing as.... Like, I can't just be running into dungeons without knowing a backstory or something to make me care about what I'm doing in the game. Otherwise, it feels like I'm just doing whatever for the sake of doing whatever.

If you ACTUALLY play RPGs for character development then yes Planescape Torment is fucking good on that part. The setting is also pretty nonstandard (Don't assume it's typical just because it's DnD).

Demons Souls had a garbage story but the gameplay was fun and the atmosphere was good, which I'll take over story anyways. Fuck goddamn motherfucking son of a bitch crystal geckos though and fuck the obscure alignment system.

faith builds are pretty weak at the 100+ level range. the regen from blessed equipment is pretty nice but not nice enough when faith doesn't offer anything you can't get from something else. knockdown + wrath of god would also be pretty good if players weren't so ridiculously durable at that level range, too. so it's basically just The Mirdan Hammer Build. which is pretty strong, but not very flexible.

hands of god -are- cool though.

up there mostly what you'll see is strength(dbs, knight sword, great axe), dexterity(kilij, uchigatana, spiked shield), or magic focused builds.

There's a new (Japanese) interview. Probably spoilers ahoy, maybe not though. http://news.dengeki.com/elem/000/000/401/401145/

Someone on gamefaqs summed up a fair amount of it here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/606312-dark-souls/60211421

-There is a new weapon category called "giant bow," which is a bow that is as big as the player and fires projectiles the size of spears
So. Dragon bone bow?

: Re: Dark's Souls's's's
: MasterT October 19, 2011, 10:15:26 PM
So for anyone looking to do end game pvp/coop/finish covenants/grinding/farming/whatever, do not go into kiln and fight Lord Gwyn, its a point of no return once you beat him.

Thoughts on Dark Souls, guys?

I'd say its better in almost every way than Demon Souls. The only thing I'd really concede to Demon Souls is the main plot (Dark has better lore surrounding it) and the "open world" is more of a hindrance before you get the ability to warp: something they really had no reason to hold out on considering you're limited on which bonfires you can travel to (which is a good thing). I actually liked Demon Souls more at first but Dark won me over once I got past the first area.

If you haven't played Demon Souls I'd recommend this game to anyone who doesn't mind a challenge and enjoys RPGs, action-adventure or hack and slash (as long as you don't assume this is Ninja Gaiden or DMC).

Time for some copy paste:

Just beat the game (SL 77 I think)...

Ending sucked, didn't realize it automatically took you to new game + (complete with auto save going off every second in case you want to hit that power button) so I can't go back and finish my covenant and dick around with pvp. Pretty irritating, really bad note to finish the game on. Buuuuuuuuuuuuut at least the last boss was fun and had some good atmosphere.

: Re: Dark's Souls's's's
: Sashi April 23, 2012, 12:06:40 PM
It doesn't matter if it's a Steam release. People aren't complaining that it's not on Steam. It's that it's on GWFL and GWFL encrypts saves, corrupts saves, have lots of multiplayer issues, is not available in certain countries, and stops working if you change hardware or OS. I've had so many saves stop working for the most random reasons. Why would upgrading OS break my saves? Adding RAM makes my saves break too? Scumbag system.
: Re: Dark's Souls's's's
: Roy-Kr April 23, 2012, 04:49:02 PM
Indeed. I don't care if it's on Steam or not; i just don't want GFWL. I have one GFWL game in my Steam library (my brother bought it) and I've never been able to play it. Of course, everything else works perfectly, even the games which are supposed to be incompatible with my OS.

: LoliSauce April 23, 2012, 05:33:30 PM
Well regardless of the fact that everyone's tripping out without even having an actual confirmation, there's been a petition going around to not have it on gfwl.  Go look it up and sign that if it bothers you so much.

Thankfully, the difficulty is highly over-rated, and i had no trouble getting through the game after finding out there's actually a lock-on function.

Planning to start a NG+ since i got bored of trying to be a helpful phantom. I like assisting others in boss fights, but the time between summonings is ridiculous. I'm sure there could be a much better system in place for this if it was just made for PC.

I would've been interested in playing Demon's Souls, but they're apparently killing that game in may.

Demon's Souls servers are still alive, actually: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/05/25/demon-39-s-souls-servers-staying-online.aspx

On that note: http://www.justpushstart.com/2012/06/dark-souls-pc-coming-to-steam/
I do NOT know how legit this is btw.
If it is legit, this is the best of news.

My PS3 stopped reading discs yesterday, and the box is sealed with a fucking torx screw of all things, meaning i won't be able to open it and attempt to fix it until Monday when the stores are open.
I hate consoles.

I've been playing Dark Soul's whenever I've had free time lately.
I bought Demon's Souls two or three days ago thinking it'd be interesting enough even without online stuff. I was pleasantly surprised when i saw blood stains and messages all over the place as i ventured past the tutorial level.

As for that link; a lot of sites seem to be saying the same, so hopefully it's all true. If it is, that means i should be safe as long as i don't buy a retail copy.

EDIT: I think the article is just badly written. The game is likely sold through Steam but still requires GFWL.

Here's the steam page, if you're wondering. (http://store.steampowered.com/app/211420/)

Not a word about GFWL, but that doesn't mean much.

Wondering if it's really Steamworks or is just on Steam. Would be lame if it were on Steam and still used GFWL.

EDIT: Yeah, retail still has GFWL. I REALLY doubt that they made it so that retail plays with 360 and other retail players and Steamworks plays with other Steamworks players. Much more likely that it's all GFWL and they're just selling it through Steam.

Not getting the shitty game.
Tried for hours to get fucking GFWL to even run and it DOES. NOT. FUCKING. WORK!
Doesn't help either that every time something goes wrong I get some really smug asshole error message.
