When's Melty on Steam?

Yeah, it's a side tournament -- what else did you expect?[1] Yet, somehow, I can't seem to get away from this game. I honestly thought last year was the last time I was going to have to do this. Maybe I just need to close the forum and open up virtuafi... oh, wait.

I'm just starting this thread to get an idea of who here is going to Evo this year and would play in a side tournament. I was told by a few people two years ago that they were disappointed that there was no side tournament (?!), and I don't care if it's only 12 people. Furthermore, it's Evo -- who knows who would end up showing up (Go1 does play UMvC3 and P4A...).

Tournament rules are going to be pretty standard:

  • When's Melty? 1PM Signups, the day P4A is not running pools -- which is currently Saturday, July 13th. I'm guessing that pools will not be split across two days (and given prior history, it almost certainly will not be). The tournament will be in the Beta hall (where all of the BYOC setups will be this year).
  • Standard double elimination bracket, $10 to enter, standardish prize split of 65%/25%/10%/can of Coco-Cola. I reserve the right to expand this (and shit my pants) if we have a LOT of entrants (80+), but I know that isn't happening. If a lot of the P4A players who used to play sign up, though... yikes.
  • 2/3 rounds to win a game, 2/3 games to win a set. I'm tempted to make it 2/3 straight through WF/LF/GF.
  • All characters are allowed.
  • Either player may call for a double blind pick before game one; after game one the winner of the previous game is character locked (winner is still allowed to change their moon).
  • Any tournament-regulation wired joystick and controller is allowed. Keyboard play is NOT allowed, unless you're crazy like Maidscientist and wired up a keyboard to a PS2 PCB (then at that point it's a PS2 controller).
  • No game-breaking glitches allowed (getting your ass beat by maids is NOT a game breaking glitch). This includes the infinite flight glitch with C/H-Archtype Earth! Granted, this was fixed in 1.4 but still.... This does not include the F-V.Akiha infinite. Do it and I'm beating you with a sack of potatoes anyway.
  • Shower and bathe before the tournament (I know you all are weeaboo as fuck but you don't have to smell it!).

YOU MUST HAVE A SPECTATOR PASS TO ENTER THE VENUE, NEVER MIND THE TOURNAMENT.
YOU MUST HAVE A SPECTATOR PASS TO ENTER THE VENUE, NEVER MIND THE TOURNAMENT.
YOU MUST HAVE A SPECTATOR PASS TO ENTER THE VENUE, NEVER MIND THE TOURNAMENT.

You can register for an event pass on the Evolution website (which is all you need, you do NOT need a competitor's pass unless you're playing in one of the official Evo games).

I can bring an actual, proper setup that's as lag-free as you can get (as long as your stick/controller/converter isn't ass). I would strongly encourage other people to bring more setups; I don't want to be there forever (it IS Vegas, after all). I also need a couple of people to help me run this thing -- Tempered has volunteered (sucker) and he's staying with me, and .

Post up if you're interested or you think it's time to move on and play with some goddamn gems. #whenstypemoon

[1] I remember with they rolled out the donation drive for the final game, one of the Cannons originally mentioned that he thought it would only take 2-3000 to win it. Which left me sitting here thinking "if that's the case, then they're getting stuck with MBCC as their final game" (and a real logistical problem -- or an nice maid^H^H^H^He-^H^Hmaidsports sponsorship opportunity). Or that it was going to take a lot more than a couple grand.

  • No game-breaking glitches allowed (getting your ass beat by maids is NOT a game breaking glitch). This includes the infinite flight glitch with C/H-Archtype Earth! Do it and I'm beating you with a sack of potatoes.
  • Shower and bathe before the tournament (I know you all are weeaboo as fuck but you don't have to smell it!).
You do not need a spectator or player pass to enter any of the tournaments at F-Evo except for the VF5:FS tournament -- and this is MB:CC, so you don't have to worry about that (unless you somehow managed to swap out Akira for KokoroMiyako, and if that's the case I want to live in your world).

I would strongly encourage other people to bring more setups; I don't want to be there forever (it IS Vegas, after all). I also need a couple of people to help me run this thing -- I'm tempted to snap-nominate Lolisauce, since he's from the area and he's a cool person, but still.

Post up if you're interested or you think it's time to move on and play with some goddamn gems.

(Very, as the idea is barely thought out and I'm probably missing about 332,028 issues, but let's run with the thought anyway.)

Has anyone else been following the story of Double Fine trying to crowdsource funding for an adventure game... and getting a million dollars in pledges in under 24 hours. I know a number of smaller indie developers have done this to raise a few thousand dollars, but this is just nuts. It's something I've thought about in previous instances (am I the only one that remembers Konami doing something similar for Tokimeki Memorial 3 several years back? Am I having a senior moment?)... but what if the FGC as a whole had the opportunity to try something like that?

Melty Blood: Current Code has some really weird issues. It's almost impossible not to pirate it at this point if you want to play it -- the bundles of Carnival Phantasm have long since sold out, so even people who live in Japan would have no shot. I almost have to be missing something either, in terms of unaccounted for economics, cultural issues, who knows what. It's not like Type-Moon is below whoring out their properties for money. :p (whereas I don't think this would work for, say, Touhou -- Zun already has FU money and would probably turn down a $10m royalty check).

Would you be willing to pledge money in advance for a copy of the game?
What if it had the potential to actually make money back, like Gabe Newell has brought up in the past?

Just thinking of the possibilities makes my head spin. Pledge $20 for a copy of the game on Steam (and a beta release), $75 for a physical copy of the game, $200 for a Sion hugpillow, $1000+ for an active stake in the release (where you earn some fractional amount for each copy sold), crazier shit for even higher amounts... I don't even know.

There would be a lot of questions to answer: How much money would be needed? $50,000? $100,000? More? How much more would it take to call Mauve (or Ponder, or whoever else) to upgrade the netcode? Who would translate it? Who would be responsible for making sure it passes all of the QA requirements? Would French Bread/Ecole/Type-Moon ever agree to something as non-standard as this? Isn't there a reason the game has never seen release even with interest from publishers? Or maybe the opposite -- maybe the game has already been licensed elsewhere? I think some of these could be solved by partnering with a publisher that's forward-thinking enough -- it would reduce efficiency, but it would be a much lower risk profile knowing that someone else (or lots of someone else) are paying for the project. Wouldn't be the first time a lot of traditional publishers have badly misjudged the market, especially for a more niche game.

I'm actually serious about this -- if this was a real thing with an investment opportunity, I would drop five figures on it. Am I out of my mind? (Yes, but ignore that.) Or am I underestimating how poor the FGC is?

Don't know why I did not moved it earlier -- it probably should have been a regional thread to begin with, and it definitely is now. Good luck with getting the arcade cabinet there (especially with the PC release coming).

Kohaku's Video Room / Sandy Blood: AZ MBAA casuals every Saturday
« on: September 16, 2010, 08:00:12 PM »
Yes, I'm actually trying to do something with this, lol@me. You can watch AZ players try to play MBAA every Saturday night on UStream. If you were normal people, I know you would have something better to do but you are sadlife as all hell and don't.

Come watch some top and not-so-top players like H-F Blade, Ryd, Tempered, Choco (the white, male one, unfortunately), etc..

It's split up into two halfs, with the first half being from 6 PM until dinner when we're actually trying and don't have the itis, and then there's a dinner break (there's this really good Thai place with curry a few hundred feet from my house), and then after dinner people will typically play until their face melts (which actually happens, thanks to the heat in Arizona).

Melty Blood Auditorium / The MB:AA:CC thread: Current Code 1.07
« on: December 29, 2009, 01:34:35 PM »
May it be as good of a game as VF4:FT.

Remember that the PC version of MB:AA:CC has its own thread; if you want to talk about that (or anything related to it), go there.

Actual info discovered so far (from our own personal dumpster of a thread):

http://e56.info/discussplus/artview.cgi?id=MELTYAC&mode=view&page=0&num=13489&sort=1&back=tree

- Location test announcement for MBAA: Final Tuned
- Will be at Club Sega Akihabara on Dec. 26/27 (Saturday/Sunday)
- Will have all updates made to the PS2 version released this summer.

- The hardware is not going to be Naomi but Ringwide, which is an XP-embedded system that would make a PC port a closer reality than before.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sega_arcade_system_boards#RingWide

RingWide is made of inexpensive components. Even a new computer built with cheap parts can completely dominate it spec-wise, since it relies on SDRAM along with a recommended graphics card series about three years old and processor that was weak even when it came out.

Discuss any actual changes (perceived or otherwise), details, musings, whatever. Just don't shit up this thread, especially with talk about a vaporware the PC port and what it does to the community . If you really want to discuss that, go post in Akiha's Tea Room about it (and don't fag the place up any more than it already is; that's all I ask).

Time to play with the big boys, folks. NEC was nice, but that has always been an event very friendly to the community and it is also (unfortunately) over. Final Round was a fight initially but the community showed up in force and brought the staff around. Evolution? One of the biggest fighting game tournaments in the world (if not the biggest), with players from not only all across America but from Europe and Asia too? Really? It's time to stand up and be counted. Let's get this thing so large that we alter the gravitational pull of the Earth (or at least pull a couple of Japanese players into orbit).

I don't care if Evo is seven months out, the community needs to plan to storm the block as hard as humanly possible. Everybody -- and I damn well mean everybody -- needs to come out for this.

I have two goals for this event:

1) Draw more people than at least one of the official Evo games. NEVER MIND IT'S PART OF THE MAIN CARD AT EVOLUTION THIS YEAR HOOOOOOOOLY SHIT.
2) Draw at least one top Japanese player to show up (bonus points if they came to play MBAA as their primary game). I REALLY SHOULD HAVE THROWN A ZERO IN THERE JESUS FUCKING CHRIST YOU PEOPLE STOP BEASTING. (Actually, don't.)

The actual rules will now be dictated by Evolution staff with input from the community at-large.

There will be some other events planned, including a live show of The Donjon Network and another episode of Sadlife Live! (this time, broadcasting from Club Pure, one of Vegas' hottest night clubs -- with a bunch of guys who can't socialize? It'll be comedy gold.) Plus the usual shit when a group of people get together in Vegas for a long weekend.

Who's staying home, and who's going with me????

Actual logistical information follows! This is mainly going to be used to figure out who has rooms and who is still looking for heads.

Lolisauce (at his house)
--Sp00ky
--Master Chibi
--Zaelar
--Brandino
--Komidol
--Tempered
--Level 0
--Oni

LoliSauce is more or less filled up, and it's at his house which is about 15 minutes from the strip.

AntiShoto (at Ceasar's Palace)
--Kusanagi
--Kirah

Team_Purple (at Ceasar's Palace)
--some guy

ViceVirtuoso (at Ceasar's Palace)
--Nobody else right now. Sad Sacchin is sad.

Spidey (at Ceasar's Palace)
--??? -- apparently he has a bunch of SoCal heads in, but no actual named names.

The Northeast Championships are one of the longest-running tournament series in America and, with the death of ECC, the premiere event for fighting game players on the east coast.

It was also the first major in America to host Melty Blood as one of its official games. I'm going to quote myself here from 2007, because it's still relevant.

Back in the day, when you brought up the idea of running Melty Blood at a major event, people either went "what the fuck is that?" or just laughed at you for wanting to play an animu fighter; you would be taking up valuable resources that could be used toward MvC2 or 3S money matches. Then there was NEC. Big Eric (the tournament director for the event) just looked at it and went "you have sixteen people for this? that's cool player; take this setup and run it Sunday". So it ended up being the biggest side tournament of the entire event, finishing with a set from Sp00ky and Zar that is still going to this day (MB takes a long time to play), and was the first major to officially host MB.

Some people say that tournaments take on the personality of the person running them. That's true enough with the least coast MB tournaments, anyway -- Sp00ky's usually have a high but very quiet intensity to them, my own tend to be dead serious and just a touch self-loathing, and Chibi/Zaeler's events tend to always run a bit goofy. However, Eric is one of the most laid-back and chill people I have ever met in my life, and NEC as a result is one of the most laid-back tournaments I have ever seen. People just playing random casuals randomly, hotel room after hotel room after hotel room. Random team tournaments, low tier shenanigans, ghetto burgers, a zillion side games, people just chilling (even me, and I never relax).

This is the fourth year Melty Blood will be part of the Northeast Championships, now with new games, new memes to run into the ground, new gimmicks, new people, and even a new venue. Four years... jesus fucking christ, I feel old. This tournament predates Melty Bread itself!

Relive some of the older tournament threads:

NEC7 -- This tournament predates the forum, but tournament footage is available on RottenSashimi's Youtube account.
NEC8 -- Announcement, results, and videos linked in the results post (the direct link no longer works).
NEC9 -- Announcement, results, and video from StolenECFootage's Youtube account.

Now for some nitty gritty:

The Location:

Sheraton Suites Philadelphia Airport
4101 Island Ave,
Philadelphia, PA 19153

Hotel phone number: (215) 365-6600

This location is literally within spitting distance from the airport.

There is a special rate for the event, each room is $89.99 plus tax per night. This rate is good for Friday and Saturday [12/04-12/05]. To book a room, call 1-800-325-3535 ask for NE CHAMPIONSHIP 10th ANNIVERSARY special rate.

Big Eric asks that if your getting here Friday please call me at 267-231-8996; you can come to his room and pay your pre-reg and entry fee. That would really help him out if you guys can do that.

The Rules

There is a $20 cover charge on top of any tournament entry fees that need to be paid out. You get a nicer place, you get bigger bills. Seems standard enough.

The rules:

  • $10 to enter (this is on top of the $20 cover charge); poor people (like Hyperhal) need not apply.
  • The Japanese PS2 version of Melty Blood: Actress Again will be used.
  • The Original balance settings will be used.
  • Default settings (except for quick restart and handicap being disabled), two out of three games for most tournament games, three out of five for winners finals, losers finals, and grand finals.
  • All characters are allowed except Archtype:Earth.
  • Bring your own stick or pad.
  • Free character selection by default; blind pick can be requested by either player.
  • Player side (1P/2P) is to be determined by a coinflip upon request.
  • You can change your character at any time except when you just won a game. Furthermore, the loser of a given game in a set can also request to switch sides.
  • Shower or bathe before the tournament.

Rules specific to the team tournament:

  • Teams are to be composed of exactly two people.
  • The entry fee is $5 per player (or $10 per team).
  • Players are free to select any tournament-legal character and mode they wish at any time, regardless of what their partner is using.
  • The format for the tournament is commonly known as "Waseda", where each person on the team plays one person on the other team. If both players on a team win, they advance to the next round. If the teams split the games, the winners of the first two games play each other to determine the winner of the set.
  • All sets out of the team tournament are only one game. This includes all finals games (of course, the team that lost a game going into the grand finals still needs to win two sets).
  • If both teams can decide on initial match-ups, then they can be used. If no agreement can be made, a blind draw will be used.

Time frames are currently unknown, but MB teams has always been on Saturday and MB singles always has been on Sunday, both starting at 3 PM.

I don't know which button binding rules they are using this year; either the old NEC rules (where multi-button software marcos were banned) or Evo rules (where all multi-button marcos are allowed but no easy command functions (a non-factor in MBAA)).

Matches will be recorded and possibly streamed, with commentary. Embarrass yourself in front of tens of people watching live and hundreds watching on the Internet!

So for America's first Actress Again major, let's get it popping off something fierce.

The only reference being made to an official release is this listing on Famitsu, but let's run with it.

Hopefully this doesn't get fucked up beyond belief like Ecole's port of Arcana Heart 2.  :-[

EDIT: CHECK AGAIN

Now Ecole really better not fuck this up!

Now they have a website with all sorts of random official information. The first bit of news? An alternate sprite for Ahika where she's in her school uniform. Wat.

Melty Blood Auditorium / MB:AA to NOT appear at SBO 2009
« on: December 26, 2008, 10:24:18 AM »
While previously a rumor that had been popping up on the Interwebs for the last few days, this is now confirmed in the latest issue of Arcadia: Melty Blood: Actress Again will not be appearing at the newest Tougeki tournament.

What. The. Christ.

Anyone want to come up with reasons as to why MB got dropped over 5-7 games that are less popular? This is almost certainly political in nature (if anyone has followed the dealing of ****** **** over the last two years, this is not a surprise), but why? Did Sega/Ecole get outmaneuvered by Capcom here? Is Sega looking to punish Ecole for releasing the game so late? Did Akiha call Enterbrain's bluff in regards to some kickbacks they wanted?

This makes no sense.  :psyduck:

Tournament Results / American Meatpile 4 results
« on: December 22, 2008, 12:26:24 AM »
Random results for a random event:

Random MB teams: Choco/Lokanas/HF-Blade/Spidey/Dipstick vs. Tempered/Xie/tenkai/aika/ultracarl/; Choco and HF-Blade destroy teams (Choco beat the first two, HF took the rest). Kind of rigged?

HnK: 1st was tenkai (Toki), 2nd was Choco (not Toki). Choco is shocked and awed at how broken Toki is. In other news, the sky is blue.

F/UC: 1st was HF-Blade (his waifu/Saber), 2nd was Dipstick (his waifu/Luvia). Dippy kept airmailing grab supers and walking into Excalibur, never a good combination.

And a bunch of random MMs that I was involved in:

Sirlin Turbo: bellreisa vs. Dipstick, bellreisa wins 10-8.

Beatmania IIDX: Dipstick vs. ultracarl, ended drawed at 4-4. They both failed the last song at the same time. -_-;;

MB MM match: Dipstick vs. aika, Dipsticks wins 3-2, 3-2.

aika vs. Dippy's nuts: Dippy's nuts won, 2-0.

And some other ones:

Choco vs. Chair, Chair wins 5-0. Choco gets hammered as a result to forget the pain.

aika vs. Spidey in Beatmania IIDX, aika wins 3-0. Apparently aika actually knows how to play rhythm games.

SoCal vs. AZ in Arm Wrestling, Spidey OCVs the entire team.

There are plenty of videos of this poor-ass shit, so stay tuned.

Also: comments, you asshats.

Regional Community / Melty Blood: Actress Again Locations
« on: October 11, 2008, 01:07:25 PM »
This game has been sneaking its way into some arcades in the US (wait, arcades still exist in the US?!). Please post locations of arcades with MB:AA in this thread. The first post will be periodically updated as new locations come in. Thankfully we have one to start with: Arcade UFO in Austin, TX. (Edit 10/13: Now confirmed in Chinatown Fair too!) Word on the street is that a couple of locations (University Pinball in Philadelphia, Denjin Arcade in Simi Valley) should have the game by the end of the month.

Now then, the actual list:

California

Arcade Infinity
1380 Fullerton Rd
Rowland Heights, CA 91748

New York

Chinatown Fair
5 Mott St.
Manhattan, NY 10013

Texas

Arcade UFO
3101 Speedway
Austin, TX 78705
