Anyone know what Korean or Japanese players use for their converters?

Or, can go find out?

They play on arcade.

Obviously, they don't need to use practice mode at all!

On a second note, Japanese combo videos also never use practice mode!

I don't think not wanting to wait 10-15 seconds each time you start up the game has anything to do with laziness. That wait is fucking annoying when you're switching sticks/pads out.

Life is more important than games. Especially in America. If this was a valid career choice for us it would probably be different, but since its not we will never be as hardcore into it as our Asian counterparts.

Bullshit. There are tons of people out there who played games like World of Warcraft and Counterstrike so much that they have little time for much else. America (and Canada, countries, Europe) is just centered around games with Internet accessibility rather than arcade games. There is much less of a "pro tournament, get paid by sponsors" scene, but people play games just as much.

And if you're talking about games in general...look at pro American football and basketball.

Speaking of pro gamers, do top players in Japan even have sponsors, or do most of them just live off of parents/live off a shitty part time job and a place with cheap rent? Or do they somehow mix their arcade time in with a career/college?

Not really sure if it was 100% true, but from some of the accounts of gamers that have visited Japan(Elvenshadow, Destin, etc), many of the top Japanese players lead fairly normal lives.  A lot of them are out of school already and have jobs, so basically their daily routine is to wake up, go to work, go to the arcades afterwards, and then go home and sleep.

Also, you have to consider that the density of arcades in Japan is much higher than it is here.  I remember there was a part in Elvenshadow's blog where he was talking to some of the GG players at a tournament he attended, and he told them that he traveled 2-3 hours by train to get there, and described just how shocked they were.  Traveling 2-3 hours, or even flying for a tournament is pretty standard for getting to tournaments in the US, with the lack of competition and how spread out most of us are, but I guess in Japan where there is good competition everywhere and the nearest arcade is like half an hour away at max, traveling for that long of a period isn't necessary.
What Psylocke says is true. Don't tell me you assumed the Japanese threw away their lives for video games.

It'd be easy to assume that when you see Korean Starcraft players. However, they have sponsors, which is basically the wage they make for playing the game.

I'll admit I was probably using too extreme of examples. Its certainly possible to put 8+ hours into a game a day and hold a fulltime job. Its not like every Japanese person is working 60 hours a week, though that's the stereotype I had in my head.

Anyways, I'm forgetting what I was trying to argue. I'm getting the sense we weren't really arguing about anything at all.

Melty Blood Auditorium / Re: Hi-res sprites?
« on: February 26, 2008, 11:50:11 AM »
Melty Blood, along with Third Strike, has the greatest animation in fighting games. It's disappointing to see games like GG and AH with high res sprites but choppy animations, especially during combos. It must be very very difficult to put effort into both aspects, but if you can only do one I'd say make sure your animation is top notch.

Thus, why Blazblue looks so awesome. Highest-res graphics yet and animation that looks like it has more work in it than MB. (at least it looks that way so far, anyways)

What top players in NA MB hide their strats? All of them I've talked to seem pretty willing to share stuff if you ask specific questions.

Also, I believe the accessibility of arcades is the major playing factor. Sure, Japanese players put in tons of time into their games. That's because they can do that and keep their interest in the game. Look at online only games like WoW -- nearly infinitely accessible, and there are many people who put more hours into that game than a fulltime job.

Anytime you hear someone comment on how a match was effected by tier, its either by someone being sarcastic/joking to some degree or they're literally a newbie to the game. Lighten up.

Melty Blood Auditorium / Re: How to go about choosing a character to main
« on: February 21, 2008, 07:14:18 PM »
the fuck is this shit

play all the chars at least once and main the ones you have most fun playing

No need to be a fag about it, people ask, "What character should I play?" often enough. Just playing a character you think is the coolest looking isn't what everyone goes for.

I played Hisui, got decent (or what I considered decent) at her, dropped her after I started to get frustrated. Same with Kouma. I've managed to stick with Red Arc. (Am I a tier whore, or what? People have always told me what bullshit my characters are even if they're kicking my ass.) If you find you have a hard time improving with Kouma, either try to see if you can find a new inspiration for him (watching JP Match vids for example), or try another character. Like Warakia or Nero, as someone suggested.

And yeah, Kouma's 2b is great for anti air, but it won't hit someone coming on top of you, like a SJ Ciel or Nanaya when you're in the corner.

Even if you did put forth the effort to make high-res sprites, it would take so long that MBAA would already be out, and who would want to play a high res version of an older Melty Blood when a newer version of the actual game is out? Heck, the next version after MBAA would probably be out by then.

Making a fan made high res pack would be a god awful pain in the neck too, as Melty's strength graphicswise is its frames of animations.

I'll just comment on the Warc player.

Warc has two main staples in her game. Bloodrings and j.b. Throw out bloodrings at various angles to make Nero afraid of jumping in as he pleases at you, and once you instill that fear, control the space in front of you with j.b. Also, try to follow up on air counterhits as the person's falling. 2a5b or 5a5b are usually the easiest ways to do it as Warc.

Also, yes, j.2c is seen as a scrubby move, but if a Nero's just throwing out attacks as he pleases and not even trying to defend, hit him with it and teach the dog how to sit.

I'd comment on oki and corner pressure, but it didn't really happen in your matches. (i only watched the first part of the first video)

Man, that reconstructed sprite is great work. You're even showing it off in png form! I love tracers who do that.

Moving on, according to this, it looks like Melty Blood: Actress Again didn't get a showing at the same place (AOU) games like Street Fighter 4, Blazblue, and Arcana Heart 2 were being shown off of at. Quoting the page:

I was sad to find the sign at the Sega booth that said, “Melty Blood Actress Again presentation canceled because it still needs development.” >.< I think their website changed the release date to 2008 summer too. On the other side was a surprisingly long line waiting for the Purikura machines.

Along with the picture:

Oh well.

Oh yeah, also from that page:

I also took a quick look at the Sega prize booth, and it said there’re some Melty Blood Act Cadenza figures coming out in the summer, with characters in swimsuits! The confirmed characters are Arcueid, Ciel, and Sion. Mmm.. Sion sounds good~

Haruhi Star (like we haven't see that before), but this in particular was pretty well done.

I wonder why they randomly throw Captain Bravo from Busou Renkin into the second song?

Wouldn't it be sweet if the character art showing Executioner Ciel meant one of her grooves would give her that?  :V One can only dream!
