Tournaments and Events / NorCal Ranbat @ SJSU -8/30/08-
« on: August 21, 2008, 07:49:12 PM »
Most info taken from qwerty from dustloop (too lazy to retype stuff)  :prinny:

Alright Norcal, you've been asking and now here it is. Our own special little tourney just for anime fightin' games.

We (me and the other organizers) will be at the SJSU Bowling Center at around noon to set things up, and then from 1pm to 4pm we'll be taking registration for both MB:AC and GGXX:AC (PS2) tournies. During this time there'll be setups for both games for casuals or money matches or whatever the hell you want to do (except break or steal them ).

The results of all tournies will be posted in this thread, and all players will be ranked based upon a win:loss ratio. These statistics will be kept and updated in (hopeful) future events.

As a side note, we did originally plan on a VF5 tourney as well as a 3S tourney, but there is currently not enough interest in VF5 and 3S means venue fee for freeplay on the cabinet. These are both things we want to do in the future, but for now we're just going to start small and work our way up .

Updated Schedule:
1pm-3pm: Registration for all tournies and free setups
3pm-Finish: GGXX:AC and MB:AC singles
Post tourney-1am: Free setups again

Rules:
- This should come as no surprise, but everyone must bring their own controllers. We're not going to supply sticks or controllers to anyone.
- Single brackets will be double-elimination and best of 3 rounds
- Entry fee is $3 per tourney. Pot will be split 70/20/10.
- Points will be seeded (your points will carry over to future tournies).
- Don't be an ass . We're all cool dudes who play obscure games of an obscure genre so try to keep conflict to a minimum.

Additional Info:
- Teams will only happen upon a vote.
- In case of MBAC teams, it'll be 2v2 SBO-style, with a vote for double/single elimination
- Pot split will be the same 70/20/10 and fee will be the same as singles ($3 per member).
- Teams will not be ranked

Equipment Checklist
DJcream - Laptop for MBAC, maybe TV for GGAC

Original Dustloop thread...

Sorry for the short notice. I tried to get it set for later in September but I lost that argument, 1-2. So, I guess this will be a good warmup for that American Melty the week after.

Hey guys, sorry for the long wait. I just kinda want the EVO and SBO hype to blow over really quick. Anyways, here's an update of whats goin' on...

- No date set yet but it's going to happen in mid-September to late-Sept at this rate
- We're waitin' on SJSU to start up classes again and open up the Bowling Alley to talk to the peoples there
- Morning/Early afternoon will be for team play (at least for MBAC) and it's going to be 2v2 SBO-style (single elim)
- Afternoon/Night will be for singles, double elim 2/3 etc...
- I'm supplying my laptop for MB play and maybe a TV for some GG if we decide to NOT use the GGAC machine
- Talks of 3s side tourney is being thrown around...

Other than that, I'll try to keep more info coming whenever I don't have school/work to do.

Well if we have it at SJSU, then I'm sure that the bowling alley has enough outlets for a small BYOC (bring your own computer) for some EFZ, Blitz, IaMP and all that random doujin shit. BTW, i'm down for some mahjong but i don't know how to bracket that.

Regional Community / NorCal: Possible Regional Tournament
« on: July 22, 2008, 10:58:35 PM »
Recently, I've been asked by a member of dustloop to get some responses towards the possibility of holding a major NorCal 2-day tournament. Basically, the details are undecided yet so I'm just interested how everyone else feels about the idea. The only things I can guarantee is that Melty Blood: Act Cadenza and Guilty Gear: Accent Core are confirmed games but as for date and possible venue is still up in the air.

Personally, I don't care on the date myself as long as I actually make it out there for once. But as for the venue, I've already expressed my preference for SJSU since they do have an GGAC cab. But I also hear talks of SVGL (which doesn't makes sense to me since none of those cabinets are there).

Good one Kix. If only I take away some of your HEAT.

82
Shit if no one's entering Brawl I might as well take that free money away from those random little kids then. Paper Fan, UpSmash = Win.

If I were to go, then I'm entering CvS2 and maybe 3S and ST. As for some side tourneys, MB for sure, then whatever I find interesting. Twinkle Star Spirits at the BYOC?

GGs to all the people I got re-acquainted with at Fanime. Hopefully, it won't take another half a year for me to play with ya'll once more. Special shoutouts to Dak, Sataya, Magz and Mizuki for the quality games throughout the weekend. Hopefully, I'll figure out how to beat that rushdown dickgirl Sacchin next time.

Best Fiona tip ever: 5C (if it whiffs, HC6, 5C again)

On the real, I play Fiona and though she's a bit slow just HC to gain a bit of speed and IAD.b a lot. BTW, I run the water arcana because having an unbreakable grab is so nice after a j.2C finisher.

Poker :prinny:

I really don't play anything else except for fighting games and very few RPGs and music games.

White Len / Re: Vs. Lens and Red Arcs
« on: May 02, 2008, 02:13:53 PM »
I just realized that I can do W.Len's 2B, 6B into air combo for some good damage vs. Lens. Against R.Arcs, it's still very iffy especially when canceling the 6B into EX ice. Apparently, that mess would whiff at any part of the stage.

Synesthete - https://typo3.digipen.edu/index.php?id=986
Genre: Music game
Objective: Move your dude around the play field and avoid monsters, WHILE playing IIDX to shoot the monsters until you clear the room. Multi-tasking madness is needed to play this awesome game.

For suggestions for free games, I usually refer to these...

White Len / Vs. Lens and Red Arcs
« on: April 11, 2008, 01:04:44 AM »
What I notice is that W.Len's 2b is pretty much the gateway that leads W.Len into many of her powerful combos. However, vs. Lens and Re Arcs, that gate is closed and I have a hard time trying to gain the advantage against those 3.

So I've realized how much of a downfall it is to have one of her most useful moves to be useless but on top of that, vs. Len and Red Arc, characters with high poking priority, makes the matchup even harder against W.Len's crappy poke priority.

So how do I go about dealing with these characters. What do I use to score a knockdown and how should I follow up for the Oki?

The regular series was okay.

Then the OVAs showed up and destroyed my brain.

Akiha's Tea Room / Re: Why can't America win SBO?
« on: February 27, 2008, 12:06:34 PM »
In response to people like Fatality and mainstream gaming, people like us DON'T GET PAID TO PLAY GAMES unlike those guys. Everyone on this board has either work or school or both that keeps them away from playing MBAC, a game that has yet to be accepted by the majority of the American fighting game scene.

As for us not doing well in SBO, it's pretty much the majority of Americans have a hard time exposing themselves to some of the tactics that Japanese players utilize. Our methods are pretty much outdated since it takes the hardcore (most of the time, crazy Japanese full-time players) to discover a new exploit/tactic to be debuted in a major tournament.

Planning the next NorCal tournament. Holding it at SJSU unless another viable location is discovered.
Saturdays: March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29. Suggestions are open to other dates.
When's Spring Break for everyone? I think I'd be most cool with the 15th.
