FFA just got Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code, and I'm rearing to help build more of a scene for it!

They've also got a bunch of other fighters:
BlazBlue: Continuum Shift
Guilty Gear XX Λ Core
Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition
King of Fighters XIII
Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (Arcade Style Cabinets)
Mortal Kombat 9 (Arcade style cabinets, also)
King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match
Street Fighter III: Third Strike
Capcom vs. SNK 2
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
A MAME arcade cabinet with a ton of other fighting games

A lot of us meet at the arcade on Thursday and Friday nights for casuals, and I bring Arcana Heart 3 on PS3, too.
We also have tournaments every other Sunday: http://www.meltybread.com/forums/tournaments-and-events/ffa-socal-airdasher-bi-weeklies-season-2011-year-of-too-many-games!/

i'll make the trip out there soon (on a friday most likely). is there a regular scene for MBAACC yet? i know you guys just got it up and running recently, but after a near 2 hour drive, some competition would be nice. i would probably only play that and 3S. maybe some XIII but i've been playing that over at AA anyway.

Friday nights are the best nights to come over. There's usually at least one or two people playing constantly. I'm trying to get more of our Guilty Gear scene into Melty, and there's been a few people coming in exclusively to play Melty Blood lately, so hopefully it can build up. I'm not 100% sure if I can make it on Friday night, I might be working, but I always try and make it.

Yeah, I've got work off on Friday night, I'll definitely be around for matches.

Great matches w/ Raptor today. Once you figured out how to start an air combo w/ Ryougi you started getting the hang of it. I might have to start pulling out my C-Ciel soon  :laffo:

GGs last night FataCon! You have a brutal C-Miyako!
: Re: FFA SoCal Melty! (AH, GG, and BB, too!)
: FataCon April 23, 2011, 12:19:26 AM
GGs. playing MBAACC really brought my interest back. kinda late in MBAA's lifespan to start up a scene now, but i hope it picks up before i leave SoCal. there's a lot of intricacies in the game engine that i wish people would just delve into and take the time to learn. when i'm available, i'll be willing to help out and explain stuff to the best of my ability (keeping in mind that i honestly feel like i'm not too good at the game). anyway i'll try playing alts next time if more people show up. otherwise i'm staying on autopilot c-miyako lol

side note: MBAACC miyako nerfs hurt :emo:

So I'm thinking about changing the tournament format.

Here's my post on the tournament thread: http://www.meltybread.com/forums/tournaments-and-events/ffa-socal-airdasher-bi-weeklies-season-2011-year-of-too-many-games!/msg89070/#msg89070 (http://www.meltybread.com/forums/tournaments-and-events/ffa-socal-airdasher-bi-weeklies-season-2011-year-of-too-many-games!/msg89070/#msg89070)

Let me know what you think.

Gonna head over to ffa after class (ends at 4). Hope there is no traffic on the 210

: Id_asz April 30, 2011, 12:43:44 AM
GGs on Friday Numakie!

Did you pass by the cops on the 210? Apparently some guy shot himself near the off-ramp or something. The traffic was pretty bad when I was coming from Super Arcade to FFA.
: Re: FFA SoCal Melty! (AH, GG, and BB, too!)
: Numakie April 30, 2011, 07:53:28 AM
Yep. GG's.  It was nice playing people again.  :)

As for the cops: Nope. I did not.  Then again, i was heading over to FFA from PCC and traffic was relatively smooth the whole way there.

No, our format has changed. The next tournament will be on Sunday, June 12th at 5PM, along with Arcana Heart 3.

2 weeks after that tournament, we'll have BBCS2 and GG at 5pm, then two weeks after that we'll have MBAACC and AH3 again.

@Numakie: Sorry I couldn't make it on Friday, something came up. I should be around for this upcoming Friday, though.

Great games to everyone I played yesterday.

There's a lot of people who are just realizing that we've got CC, people who used to play a lot of AC back when that was new. I hope we can get a great turnout for the tournament on July 12th!

I look forward to meeting everyone, and it's good to have an excuse to practice again :)

Those vids probably won't be up till next week. idk if I recorded sound on them, I think I didn't It was mostly just a test for the tournament.

Great games to everyone! We had such a large crowd for Melty! Can't wait for next Friday.

Hey Id, what're the odds of setting up another tourney?
: Re: FFA SoCal Melty! (with Current Code v1.05!)
: Id_asz June 20, 2011, 03:47:41 PM
Uploaded some videos from Friday. I'm still uploading a lot more as we speak (I've uploaded less than half the matches I've recorded so far).

They'll be up on this playlist: http://www.youtube.com/user/FFAUnited?feature=mhsn#g/c/6C1B36701C2C930E

Check out that channel for tournament videos as well.

Yeah, there will be another tournament in about a month. I might do a sort of West Toast kind of thing where we hold the tournaments ~once a month and have Melty, Guilty, BlazBlue, Arcana, and maybe HnK and VS.
: Re: FFA SoCal Melty! (with Current Code v1.05!)
: Numakie June 20, 2011, 03:50:23 PM
6 tournies in 1 small arcade? Dang.  :-X
: Re: FFA SoCal Melty! (with Current Code v1.05!)
: Id_asz June 20, 2011, 04:14:05 PM
We could do something like:

Guilty Gear+BlazBlue+Hokuto no Ken - Saturday
Melty Blood+Arcana Heart+Immaterial&MP - Sunday

Idk, just throwing that out there.

We have had 80+ person tournaments at the arcade before, so we can handle a lot of people. When Arlieth was doing West Toast, he usually would have Saturday be team tournaments and Sunday be Singles. He used to also run Twinkle Star Sprites tournaments, too (which kicks major ass)!

I'll post some stuff on our Guilty Gear thread over at dustloop and see what they think about it.

Hey what's up!

I'm Wonder_Chef, one of the top So Cal Mortal Kombat players.  After talking to Id_asz I decided that I'm going to take some time to learn the game.

I've been wanting to play for a while, but the furthest I got was some training mode on my modded PS2.

I'm still pretty confused and lack knowledge on the game, but I'll try to stop by often to learn.

See you guys soon!
: Re: FFA SoCal Melty! (with Current Code v1.05!)
: Numakie June 21, 2011, 06:18:47 PM
Hey Wonder_Chef.

I found myself going to FFA most friday evenings after work since the game arrived there. More opponents are always welcome.  ;D

You will usually find me using Ryougi and Hisui.

: Id_asz June 22, 2011, 09:49:58 AM
Hey Wonder_Chef! Great to see you around.

What character do you plan on playing as? The game itself is pretty simple once you get around the system mechanics.

I'm going to be recording more casual games this Friday. If you want to eventually see yourself on Youtube, this is the time to play!
: Re: FFA SoCal Melty! (with Current Code v1.05!)
: sharkchowder June 22, 2011, 04:00:56 PM
How late do you guys think you'll be there on Friday? I have an important work meeting that's likely to start at like 9 pm.... :(

I know the arcade's open until like 2 am, so if everyone's gonna be there really late, I might still try to make it. Otherwise, I'll probably be in over the weekend.
: Re: FFA SoCal Melty! (with Current Code v1.05!)
: Wonder_Chef June 22, 2011, 06:36:38 PM
I'm considering Ciel, although, I don't know which moon to choose.  I still have to mess with more characters of course.

There's a lot of stuff I still don't understand about the game, but I'm working on it and messing with some stuff in the training mode of AA for PS2.  Is that worth doing?

I probably won't be able to make it out for a while, but with any luck I'll be starting a new job soon (right next to Japan Arcade) and then I'll be out there all the time for MB and AE.

Hopefully I can make it a few times before then.

Grind combos, grind combos, and practice combos with these settings
- crouching with Random block
- jumping opponent with counter hits on (hit em once and the opponent will fall unable to air recover. Follw up before they hit the ground.)
- crouching, blocking with recover A. (Simulates ppl mashing out during pressure. Useful for practicing frame traps.)

I tend to practice these sitiations the most.

Mostly though, is the version that I'm using fine for practicing?  I'm more than a little confused about all of that.

The PS2 MBAA works fine for practicing.  The changes that are in CC aren't that significant from the PS2 MBAA & the game is still played relatively the same.

Also, don't mind populating the thread. I don't mind answering questions, and it makes the thread look lively.  ;D

GG to everyone last Friday. Unfortunately, it looks like the 405 shutdown is going to start at 10 pm this Friday, so I'm gonna be out for this weekend... Next weekend is West Toast, so I'll try to push hard to make it to that.

I heard of people who play Thursday. Who are these people.

On another note:
Whats interesting about 405 closure is that they plan to replace over 10 miles of bridge... in 53 hours. I wonder if they will make it it.
Also, apparently the project is dubbed "Carmageddon". This came to mind. ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqrftlCAic0

Hahaha, yeah... I was having exactly that conversation with someone last night, and their response was along the lines of "Don't even bring up the possibility that they'll screw it up, it would be too horrible to imagine!" Like, the guy that we were talking to lived in Long Beach, worked in Culver, and he had decided that he was just going to pack a duffel bag and crash with friends in Culver that weekend. People are anticipating it's gonna be very very very bad.

I think there would be rather huge economic consequences if the 405 closure spilled over into Monday, but they've gotta have some kind of backup plan... don't they?

Unfortunately, Thursday is also out for me - hardcore job interview Friday morning...

Hello, since you guys have access to 1.05 are you willing to test a little something for me?
Theres two things I would like to be tested:
1)Is Nanaya's AAD dodgeable anymore?
2)Try to escape(with any method you like) these setups:F-Nanaya 2xrekka ex cancelled into AAD,H-Nanaya 236B EX cancelled into AD,C-Nanaya 236B EX cancelled into AAD.
I saw an alarming number of these setups hit(and ive never seen them avoided even once),so I'm getting really suspicious here.
(And yes I know theres a request thread, but they might not see it there.)
Thanks!

Its PS2's MBAA but i needed a basis before I can test on CC.. if i am able to.  Also I don't main Nanaya so I don't know his in depth details ;x
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpF4B5B8-ZE  <== primarly tests the 2x rekka to AAD, but i found that H-Nanaya 236B>AD and C-Nanaya 236B623B>AAD worked similar.

His AAD(AD in H-Moon) is much much faster in 1.05...to the point where I suspect you cant get out of blockstun before it hits(or you get out like 1f before) and thus its really hard to avoid.

While waiting for the regulars. I played this one guy who picked f aoko while testing with fnanaya.  Took me 2 games to realize that all he liked to do was mash the launcher under pressure.  At the 3rd game, 2nd round, I decided to lame it out and stagger pressure him, frame trapping him with ease. At the end of the 3rd round. He walked up to the worker at the time complainig that the throw didn' t work and just walked awau from the game.

Later I tested out his side and the buttons worked just fine, so I question the logic.

On another note, I did a lil of Fnanaya against the comp and some opponents. I did notice these things
~the AAD combos in the corner after the 2xrekka
~on block stun against the opponent, the 2xrekka to the aad seemed to confirm as if it was an assured hit AD.
~each time I tried I attempted the 2x rekka to AAD, it connected.
Ill maybe do a lil more testing as I go, but that is my observation

How many people usually show up on fridays?  I'm gonna be down there in a week and would definitely wanna play some games with people, there's a severe lack of players here.
: Re: FFA SoCal Melty! (with Current Code v1.05!)
: Numakie July 30, 2011, 06:14:50 PM
I, for the past month, have been going there every Friday evening and stay there for at least midnight.  Shark and Ricky usually meet me there that day and there are a few others will jump in as well.

If you do go, bring your A game. I like a challenge.  ;D
: Re: FFA SoCal Melty! (with Current Code v1.05!)
: sharkchowder July 30, 2011, 06:15:28 PM
There are usually at least 3 - Numa, myself and Ricki (another guy not on the boards) and we usually wind up with at least 2 or 3 other people casually joining in.  Id works there (so he's often there, but usually too busy to play).  I usually show up at around 9, Numa and Ricki are usually there earlier (around 8?), and we usually stay until well after midnight.  Although, we usually get dinner at the Sushi place next door, which lasts from around 9:30 to 10:30.  We'd absolutely love to have more people there... especially so we can share the cost of Numa's winstreaks...  ::)

....Although last night I managed to cost Numa at least some money   :toot:

If you don't mind me asking, which characters do you use? I'm thinking about adding some characters to my roster to keep the nights diverse. These days my mains are C-Ciel and C-Miyako, with an old and rusty C-Aoko thrown in, but I'm thinking about learning ... all the Kohakus(probably starting with F), and maybe a Maids.  Numa rolls a lot of the cast, but he's known for C-Hisui, and for my money, his second best is F-Satsuki. He also runs F-Kouma and has been training an H-Ryougi lately, with a bit of C and H-Arcuied thrown in.  Ricki hasn't really chosen a main, yet, but he's got pretty strong fundamentals with most of the cast.

There are a few other lurkers at the arcade who occasionally throw down on Friday nights. Last night we were joined by a C/H-Nero and a guy who ran C-Miyako and F-Nanaya. We've also been joined by some F-Aokos and C-Nanayas...

EDIT: Well, that was great timing.... ::)

Is anyone in the community at large interested in watching any of these matches? We don't totally suck, after all. Some of these matches are getting pretty good, I think...

Serious post (you can tell because I'm capitalizing properly):

I think we need to bury the West Toast name and move forward with a new tournament series for CC to take off. There's too much legacy associated with WT and the current SoCal scene doesn't do the name justice.
: Re: FFA SoCal Melty! (with Current Code v1.05!)
: Numakie August 30, 2011, 06:59:12 AM
With regards to scene: Ever since CC came out at FFA, I've been going almost every Friday night just to play the game (and to avoid Friday traffic). I have been fortunate that some AI heads are as crazy as I am, so there is always people to play.  Occasionally, there are others who join the fray too.  Last friday, there happened to be about 4 additional players in a day that there happened to be a 3S tournie.  (where it is a coincidence or not is beyond me)

I know I'll probably continue coming down Friday nights indefinitely.  I'd be interested in recording matches for those Fridays.  Hell, I'd like to do it myself... but I don't have any equipment (or the know how...).  Maybe when recording devices are anchored down... Friday tournies? maybe?

What do you guys think?

An arcade-only scene for an anime game is too difficult to sustain in today's age. We already know where the future of Melty lies. I think a media blitz would definitely help, but accessibility remains the same issue it's been all these years.
: Re: FFA SoCal Melty! (with Current Code v1.05!)
: sharkchowder August 31, 2011, 04:09:26 PM
@Numa - Yeah, I'm looking forward to Friday as well... not because I've learned anything this week, just because it's been a hell of a week...  But, I think this week we should try to seriously brainstorm ways of recording the matches without needing any special permission. In unfortunately lack any kind of decent camera...

@NETPLAY - While I agree that the scene would be larger and more active if we weren't reliant on the arcade for meeting people, I don't really see how this relates to West Toast.  There's certainly going to be netplay of some sort, and online tournaments in the future, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't also keep the arcade torch burning. There has been a consistent demonstrated interest in Melty this whole time by people at the arcade (new players every night, outside of even the regulars). If they actually recognize the name (or Brand, or whatever) of West Toast, then it's good for the scene as a whole (as it reinforces the notion that a scene even exists)... so what exactly is the problem?

That would be me and my friends.  We just happen to plan our trip to FFA on the day of casuals, we knew nothing of casuals whatsoever on Friday nights.  I was going to use the time to relearn the game, since I haven't even touched it for about 5+months and I'm new to CC.  Regardless it was great playing against new people and not the usual 7 people I play AA with.

I would be going to FFA often for casuals but having no car really sucks, and it's a 1+hr trip.  We should be going again sometime this month...so expect to see us again.
: Re: FFA SoCal Melty! (with Current Code v1.05!)
: Numakie September 01, 2011, 11:31:31 PM
@NETPLAY & @Sharkchowder:
For the recent West Toast, the name alone brought Arizona to FFA (least I'd like to believe).  That is warrant enough to keep the name as is, IMO.   I do agree though that the name West Toast alone is something to live up to.  All it needs is someone who is willing to go all out.  As for myself, I'm content on supporting the game as of current by playing it in one of the very few arcades that have CC in the US.

On another note, Doesn't West Toast host multiple games, not just MB?  I remember when I first came in at WT4 at Interface, MBAC PS2 was the only game I saw with a tournie behind it. Then when it moved to FFA at the later dates, GG was added to the mix of WT's.  The recent WT had MBAACC, AH3, GG, BB, and MVC3.  My theory is that West Toast started with just MBAC but then later, several other "Airdasher" games were added to support other player interest.

I'm the driver, and also the Tohno Shiki player that was there.  Most notably the group of people bringing all the hype to that bubble bobble machine.  I believe whoever was there kept hearing a white guy call me the "Cheaty Asian".  I plan on showing up with Neo and possibly others about every 4th friday from last week's.  If I get this job, I'll show up more often. @Numa - I'm definitely interested... I'm not sure if I'll actually be free, though. I think there's a decent chance, but some projects are ramping up.

@Others in carpool - Yeah, man, we're pretty scattered. I wouldn't ask anyone to go out of the way to pick me up - I'm usually good for transportation. I was mostly wondering if there was anyone I could help out, but it doesn't really seem like it. I'll likely be there, but I doubt I'll be doing any dethroning... this has been a murderous week at work. No time to play, not a ton of spare energy...

(Yeah... double post... beh)

Out of curiosity, who would be interested in going to FFA on Fridays around the North Pasadena/PCC area or near the 210 on the way over there?

Just a couple things to keep in mind.
- I head out there after work (between 6 to 8ish)
- I tend to stay there beyond midnight, sometimes 2a and beyond.
- The back seat of my car is a tad low on headroom.

Might as well throw it out there since I already go to FFA most fridays, and I heard from Id Asz that they will get 1.07 at the arcade soon.

Hopefully I'll be free next week....

A bunch of us are going to start regularly showing up on Thursdays from 8:30-11:30ish. Friday's are still going on, though. I'll be bringing my PS3 for Arcana/BlazBlue casuals on Thursdays, and Fridays if I'm not busy working.

I've also installed a permanent VGA and Audio (R&W) output from the cabinet that anybody can access. If you're up for recording, then we can get some youtube vids back up (maybe even a stream! =O).

Arlieth is currently working on getting us 1.07, which should be coming pretty soon (and I'll announce when we get it).

Also, we will be hosting a new West Toast at FFA on Jan 21st and 22nd. I'll post up again once more of the details are ironed out.

See you Thurs and Fri!

Underneath the arcade panel (joysticks and buttons) where your legs go, the cables are sticking out on the right. They're easy to spot. As an added bonus, if somebody isn't recording matches, they can get an adaptor and plug their headphones into the audio jack (P1 side only, I'll work on that for P2).

As for streaming, the arcade's internet connection isn't all that great, so if you logged into it it might hurt the people playing Xbox (so I password protected it). However, the Vet's Office next door has an unprotected wifi connection and they close at 6 or something, so they wouldn't mind if you used theirs.
: Re: FFA SoCal Melty! (with Current Code v1.05!)
: Numakie November 18, 2011, 07:01:34 AM
Gonna bring my new recording device and lappy to try and record matches tonight.
I'll prolly be there by 8ish.

: sharkchowder November 18, 2011, 01:58:03 PM
Unfortunately, I'm not sure if I'll be there tonight. A lot of it is going to depend on how well work goes.  If things go smoothly, I'll try to show up like normal. Else, I may be out again tonight.

I'll have my phone on me, so people can call if they want to confirm later on for any reason...

We bought our board from Arcade UFO, so we need to get the update from Arcade UFO's supplier. Arlieth is working with FubarDuck on getting it here, but I think FubarDuck is busy in Canada with stuff atm.

Sometimes it can be hard to get "free" stuff from a Japanese supplier since there's little to no commission from them. If we were in Japan then getting it would be no problem, but it has to be shipped overseas and everything. I'll call Arlieth up and get an update for you guys.

hi i live in temecula

that's 60mi south of where arcade infinity used to be and 60mi north of san diego

basically, it sucks

i have a place where people can come over but it's kinda out of the way

: Re: FFA SoCal Melty! (with Current Code v1.07!)
: sharkchowder December 30, 2011, 02:43:30 PM
I'm not opposed to carpooling with people, if we have decent halfway points.

I'm in Culver, usually, which is about as far south from FFA as it was west of AI.  Unfortunately, my apartment is a tiny studio, so it's not particularly suited to having a bunch of guests over to play the PC version.

As far as carpooling to FFA goes, I'd totally be willing to drive anyone who can get to the area around Culver (Or Marina Del Rey, or Santa Monica, or whatever)  (which would at least lower the cost if you were heading from say, Temecula). Unfortunately, my car only fits one extra person.  If, say a van of people were heading through my area, I'd be willing to pitch in gas money in exchange for a ride, too.

On that note, Ehrik, where are you? Anywhere near the west side?

If I ever move to a bigger place, I'd have no problem hosting...

: sharkchowder December 30, 2011, 03:35:29 PM
Yeah, Ouch... you guys are really really far southeast of me.

Well, basically, my offer from before still kinda stands.  If you're ever passing through this way (it is technically en route to FFA, I guess) and you want someone to pick up the final third of the gas tab, then I'd be willing to drive the rest of the way....
