Since more and more people are asking about a Vancouver scene, I'm starting a Vancouver thread!
I try and host meets whenever I can, so I'll put up the times here. Anyone else who wants to hold meets should post here too!

123 faster, bus stops like half a block from my place.
106 is mroe of a walk but it might be faster to catch this one because of bus timing.
Walking is possible. Walk up the hill to 4th ave. Best option if neither bus is at the stops.

I've been to every AE for the past 6 years, but I'm going to sit this one out.

Awww, it's ok. The only real thing I ever look forward to at AE is really just the last day at the dealer room. And I can get everything the dealer room has and more (minus the original author stuff) here in Taiwan :teach:

So they have MBAACC in Taiwan now... They released it at the same time as Jubeat Knit. Fuck Vancouver, I wanna stay in Taiwan now. They have all the good stuff.
Anyways, unfortunately the joystick sucks =[ I actually couldn't do 66, 44 or 22 inputs because it was that bad. I'll have to do some testing when they decide to fix the shitty setup.

If you had stopped ragequitting when you lost and switching back to pad; you would be able to play stick by now. Now go learn stick in the arcades in taiwan; come back and body us all.

Stick or pad it makes no difference, it's all about whatever you're most comfortable with and if you play arcade enough it'll just come naturally. Patience, Practice, Learning and Adaptation are the key.

Tougeki SBO live stream is this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, except of course it's on Japan time so for us it will be loopy backwards nighttime hours.
Basically in our timezone:
- The 1st day will start (today) Friday evening and continue through the night, overnight, all night, and into the wee hours of Saturday morning.
- The 2nd day will start (tomorrow) Saturday evening and continue through the night, overnight, all night, and into the wee hours of Sunday morning.
It's pay-per-view, at $18 for one day or $30 for both.
The games being run are as follows...
Day One - VF5R, BBCS, T6BR, KOF13, MBAACC, GGXXAC
Day Two - KOF02UM, AH3, SF4, SSF2X, SBX, SF33S
I have no idea if those lists are in the correct order or not because I haven't found an actual schedule for the event yet.

So after playing MBAA randomly at Akicon, and noticing there's actually like, a scene for MBAA up here, I decided I wanna try to get in. Cause I'm sort of tired of like, no one playing BBCS and I want something to play. I've been in the Type-Moon scene for a long time, but I never really learned MB, and I haven't really played since Re-ACT Final Tuned. So I wanna learn, but it's from the ground up.

They can't get GvG Extreme, it needs to connect to the Japanese network in order to even boot up the game. That's the only reason why CHQ isn't getting it.

Anywho, we should probably plan some meets. I don't mind going to Byuu's house every once in a while, but going there often is ridiculous as it takes me like 2 hours just to get there. Isn't there anyone in between who can host? I can host sometimes, but not often plus I have a dog. Torry's place is ok, but only when he's not working (which like almost never). Mike's house is... well let's just say playing MB there isn't going to happen. Also, it'd be nice to get some recordings going again, so it'd be nice if your recording equipment is good to go Coren.
More importantly, MB meet at Torry's house (Yes he's alive) on Saturday Dec 18th.

That pretty much just means you're never going to play because there will always be a "new" version. I mean, I'm pretty sure it didn't stop you from playing SF4 when SSF4 was announced did it? I mean, no offense or anything, that really just sounds like an excuse to not play. I mean even at Mike's house, whenever I saw you I'd be like "Hey let's play MB" and unless there was at least 2 other people playing the game, your response was usually "Nah, I'ma just play some SF4 right now".
Besides, I've asked about your schedule before. I mean look at Torry. Not being able to go to MB meets due to work schedules? Torry has like the most fucked up work schedule's I've ever seen yet, he still makes it out whenever he can not to mention host meets. Got work? Tell me when you're off. I can easily schedule a meet for that time. Oh but wait, you're probably busy with something else. Probably SF4. I understand that's your main game, but you definitely make time for that. I'm sorry, I should've clarified. I meant MB(AA) in general, not MBCC. It seems to me if CHQ were to get MB, it would be CC. If I were always waiting for the newest iteration, well, I wouldn't be playing anything.
It's funny how you think I have time for SSFIV now (or rather, make time). I used to (before I had a job and went to Mike's), but I don't now. I haven't played SFIV/SSFIV in a long time right now. As for MB at that time, I felt like I really needed to hit up training mode before I had a real sit down session against you or any other experienced player. Mainly to digest the Aoko strats you told me and to give myself time to figure out blockstrings, bnbs, etc. That's why I refused. Why did I refuse on more than one occasion? Because I couldn't play MBAA at home at the time (few weeks/months...? I forget), and I really didn't want to kick anyone off a set-up at Mike's just so I could go into training mode by myself. Oh, and I really only played SFIV at Mike's when Ray or Clarence asked me to.
I booked time off to go to Canada Cup... But I'm done with traveling to tournaments. Maybe EVO 2011, but we'll see about that.
And SFIV IS a terrible game. After Canada Cup, I was done with the current SSFIV. It's been a little over a month since I last really played. And I didn't even play SSFIV during the month before Canada Cup. I had like, 2 practice sessions 2 months before the event. >_>"

I've got a buddy who really wants to play MBAA, but he's an arcade player. Said something about playing MBAC a lot at CHQ, until no one challenged him anymore and CHQ removed the cabinet.
I've got one more reason why I can't show up at meet-ups, but I'll have to tell you that in private.

Well I'd say your foundations are good enough that not practicing isn't going to make it completely fruitless. If you don't plan on travelling to tournaments, then you should let go a little. Come to a meet for a game you don't practice. What's the big deal? Especially with MB, some of the people around here have less fighter experience; while training mode pays off, there's still room for you to enjoy a 2-sided match. It doesn't have to be about the competition, you don't have to money match Coren just because everyone else wants to :V. I hosted a meet the other day and I haven't played MB in many many months, training or otherwise. Or any other fighters for that matter. But I played, ate pizza, won some and lost some, and it was fun.
You should come around when you've got time, I like your company!
PS 10 days of work is terrible, you shouldn't work jobs that make you work 10 days in a row (unless you like that sort of thing).

Personally, in a combo-heavy game like MB, I would at least like to get one decent bnb down and a safe blockstring mix-up before I have a good session against someone. I didn't have that before, but I do now.

Yeah, I'm well aware of that. Which is why I want to go down to meets. Before, I was using Training Mode just to test set-ups and occasionally do combos to refresh my memory. Not, "do the same combo over and over and over again".
It's just that in these types of games (combo heavy/gatling/airdashers, doujin fighter, etc.), I honestly need to get down a bnb first. It's like I get messed up by a 30% combo and I deal a 5% combo in return... Same thing happened when BB came out, I had to spend several hours in training mode first. I wouldn't play against anyone until I could get a decent bnb down first. You can get by in SF by just poking, and most of the cast is pretty simple to use. i.e. Jab x3 xx special.
Working overtime today = missed payment = fucked. ;D

Speaking of smash, I had to floor manage a Brawl event for the gamesclub, apperentally the E-Sports club wanted us to run one for them (but yet again their version of 'collaborative event' was "Put our name on this event, we'll tell like five guys about it and you guys do everything"). Some of the players came back today and got hype for Me and my bros playing Melty and VanPri in the gamesroom.
At least the smash players are free money for the club.

Playing MB in your free time does not make you better. Playing more matches against people do. Wu has actually played over 700 matches in the span of 3 days while we were at big white. We've taught him lots and he's learned lots. He's even played plenty against Jay. He's probably comes the furthest for playing about 2 weeks that I've ever seen. He can already kinda beat me while I play fuck around characters and can beat Torry's F-Mech every so often. Don't take him lightly just cuz you think he's new. This guy is serious for MB.

That's kind of a selfish thing to say. Even though an organizer's role in the fg scene is very important, a scene wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the players. Also, I'm sure if you weren't around someone else could of picked up the slack. Someone always does because it's just the natural thing to do if you want to play these kinds of games. And that's exactly what happened, when people were playing MB, before you were even around. Saru Kada helped to make it happen. So did Alexey, Shui and myself. Even when we didn't have a place to play, we did it gazebo-style. Why? Cuz we wanted to play ofc! ;D

I only said what I said because Coren was accusing of me deterring people fromm playing. I know it sounded arrogant, and mostly it was said in the moment, but I do not like it when someone who can't even something as simple as bring his recording setup since he was the only one with a portable one, basically telling me that I'm deterring people from playing. Too much stuff to bring? I always bring my stick, PS2 and 2 extra pads whenever I go to a meet. Recording setup is just a laptop and dazzle.
Oh believe me when I say I know the scene wouldn't be around without people. After all, I had to play netplay for like a year before I had met anyone in real life to play with. Before I was around, I know Saru Kada was helpin out. But after the PC port, no one really played anymore. Shui has been super busy with life for the past while, Saru Kada doesn't even play the game much except when I ask him to play with me and the MB people and I guess you moved. I honestly think people would've been content to just do netplay all day instead of in person.
Of course I try and get people together and play in person for fun and not for thanks. But I really don't appreciate getting slammed on not doing a good job by someone who doesn't have anything to show for the community.
And really, I like how most people other than the ones living in Vancouver will automatically assume I'm the one at wrong here just because I don't go on IRC and thus no one really knows who I am. If anyone really bothered to look at the beginning of this, you would've seen that I was the first and only person to tell Wu to stop trolling. He couldn't find something to say to Wu so he ended up taking out his frustration at me.
On a completely different note. I'm gonna see if I can find some places to host meets. Probably gonna end up being at Byuu's or Torry's place unless anyone wants to offer

Ah, nothing like some quality drama to spice up an otherwise bland and boring thread. All that friendliness and "GGs guys!" was really making me sick to my stomach.
Now, having said that, I really don't like the way things are going here. First off what really appalls me here is the fact that everyone seems to be OK with Coren's decision to quit. Nobody said a word, meaning they are alright with his decision. I'm not. Think about it - how hard is it to find new players? And how much more difficult it is to keep them interested and willing to play on a regular basis? This small scene of ours really cannot afford to lose players.
Fong, I was truly surprised by your response to this whole fiasco. Trying to claim some sort of ownership to the scene and then making it seem like you're entitled to something for supporting it is just...wow...distasteful, to say the least. I understand it was said in the moment, but pointing out others' faults and playing the blame game is certainly not the way of a leader, which you claim to be. I don't want to see ANYONE leave or quit for whatever reason, because I understand how hard it is to find new players, for they are what makes a 'scene'.
Now, Wu, you're definitely not helping with the trolling. Why would you make yourself look like a complete asshole when you just recently arrived on the scene. And why would you willingly and knowingly try to get someone to quit...I know you're a nice guy, but I can't speak for everyone in this thread. I don't believe you to be acting any better by instigating things, even lightly this way. In fact, there was nothing but provocation in the posts during the drama--although empty as you claim they are, I could almost assume there was some kind of enmity between people. Furthermore, something like this should not be said to a person you don't really know very well (yet); it could cause some problematic misunderstandings. This whole "life lesson" was a farce.

Well I don't know your personality, but even for a normal person in the heat of the moment, it would seem odd for them to say something so self-entitling like, "my scene", when their trying to defend themselves when it comes to helping out a scene. It just seems that far out of place in the argument, I'd be more inclined to think it was a slip-of-the-tongue on your part, and that you meant it in some kind of sincerity. If I were in your scene, it would definitely be a thought in the back of my mind. ;D

It's true that I'm sure most people don't know you, but you posted all of this online for everyone to see. All can we judge upon is what we see, so you can't help but to expect to get this kind of criticism. You folks aren't the only ones who do this, but this little episode just goes to show why everyone should save this kind of drama for PMs or IRL. That way things have less of a chance of getting misinterpreted and blown up online, or have outsiders interfere. And it just makes everyone and the scene look bad, period. I know this doesn't have anything to do with me, but I just felt I had to say something since like Alexey said, it's sad to see the vancity scene nowadays go through something like this, knowing how hard it is get players for this game. I currently own one Hori Real Arcade Pro 2 stick that is modded to be full Sanwa.

I would like a second stick for PS1 or PS2 that is of similar shape and quality.
It would allow me to be "gear independent" when I run these side-tourneys.
Another Sanwa-modded HRAP2 or an unmodded HRAP2SA would be ideal.
Something close to that would suffice as well.

I'd be interested in playing Melty Blood or other fighters. Persona 4 Arena looks pretty good once it comes out. I still play some Blazblue, but I don't think many people play it in BC/Vancouver still.

We still play melty as mentioned, and other than that, there's street fighter IV, ultimate marvel vs capcom, and guilty gear. we're also currently doing 4 player gears of war 3 horde mode, and we just about always have a game of japanese mahjong (riichi mahjong) going on fridays as well.
I've heard conflicting opinions regarding the persona fighter, but I'll probably buy it regardless when it comes out. not sure if anybody still does blazblue in vancouver. as for other fighters I would be willing to play, in no particular order: eternal fighter zero, touhou immaterial and missing power, hokuto no ken, fate/unlimited codes.
