Yes.

Ok so I am curious about the timing and recovery after sheilding especially for sheilding multi-hit attacks.  I come from a 3s background where you have a instant recovery frame right after a successful parry.  At times it seems like I have no advantage frame after a successful sheild to do a counter attack even on normal link combos.  It seems like my character is still stuck in the sheilding animation after certain multiple frame attacks and thus can not successfully sheild all of them or counter attack.  I am not sure if this depends on the amount of time the button is held or not either.  I have been able to do this on occasions, but not consistantly.  I may not have it down right yet due to the game speed, but does this work the same for MBAA?  I figure any insite may help me to get this down with more ease.

3/20/2010. Tourney on saturday. I need that Melty practice...for now, put me down for yes. There are a couple questions though that will determine my final answer (questions two and three are for you Lolisauce):
tl;dr

Burnt Toast is from 9/10am till 11pm, so regardless of how long the melty tourney is the game will be set up on a few tvs all day for causals. You guys should ask Bell if you can stay at his place (kick him down with some of those bucks that would have gone to hotel). I dont think he would mind pre/post casuals for whenever you guys arrive/leave. And you all can carpool to Rowland Heights on Sat. Just a thought, you guys should ask.

Yeah, the creator of this site is an ex-3S player, as am I.

Shielding in MBAC would incur you a damage penalty on your counter-attack, as well as a frame disadvantage. A normal held shield, I believe, was a 50% pro-rate, whereas an Ex Shield was 35%. You're correct in thinking it's similar to parry, but here, it's slightly different. When you shield in MB, it forces the other person's move to continue, as if they whiffed it. In 3S, you get immediate frame advantage, not so here.

Now, shielding got changed a bit in MBAA from MBAC. You can only hold shield in Crescent and Full, not Half. This is bad for people who hold shield (i.e. not Ex Shield which is tapping the shield button) since gaining meter in MBAA is different. It's pretty useless now. I'd focusing on learning how to use Dodge.

There's also Shield Bunkers (214D) which are Alpha Counters. 100% meter use in Half-Moon but I believe it's invincible. 50% in the others.

Some of this may or may not be unique to AA but anyways to correct what Hasuko wrote... I'm not 100% on my post either but for the most part it should all be true

Normal shields may or may not prorate more than EX Shield but at this point it doesn't really matter.

You will be at a frame disadvantage if you choose not to do anything since you won't be able to block and you'll be in shield recovery frames.

When you shield their move it is actually as if they hit since they still get cancel options ie they can double jump and block your shield counter, air dodge, air dash, I'm not sure how this holds up for shielding ground attacks.

EX-Shields are normal cancellable, normal shields are special cancellable only

Full cannot EX-Shield, only Normal shield so you must cancel into a special or shield counter (236D)

Crescent can EX-Shield or Normal shield but they do not have a shield counter attack

Shields are still useful but for the most part they are much less stronger and can be reacted to (pretty difficult to do so though) . The best is using a EX-Shielding in Crescent Moon and countering with a 4f jab (only some characters have such a fast jab)

Shield bunkers are not invincible but have a shield/clash frame at the start which will beat out their poke and hit them. However if they whiff cancel they will be able to recover and block/punish your shield bunker.

Half-Moon bunkers are much faster than other bunkers.

My knowledge of shielding is mostly specific to MBAC, since I don't have easy access to MBAA, and when I do, I rarely shield. Sorry if I was wrong on some points. :V

What is this BBCS action being played on?  PC, cab, or modded arcade board?  Also would this just be a Saturday thing cause I would not be able to pull off another Friday off?

It's going to be on a modded arcade board I believe. I think however, that there will be a modification where you can use an arcade stick. Just like the time at Devastation.

As for it just being a saturday thing, I'm not sure but I believe so. I think the tourney for the most part is going to be a one day deal unless someone else mentions otherwise.

Macc, allow me to sum up in the easiest way I can.  It's a little difficult though, since shielding works different for each moon style.  Here's a quick breakdown:

Crescent- This style can EX Shield and normal Shield, and you can extend the normal Shield by holding the D button (at the cost of meter).  An EX Shield is just a perfectly timed Shield, which you can cancel into any normals or specials you want.  Normal Shields can only be cancelled into specials in this style.  Generally your best bet is to try to EX Shield and counter with your 5A jab and go into a combo from there.

Full- This style can only normal Shield, which you can extend by holding the D button (at the cost of meter).  You can cancel the shield into any special or use the shield counter with 236D.  Since this style has no penalty for holding out your shield, be sure to make use of it.  It helps when people are staggering attacks in blockstrings.  As a general rule, it's almost always better to shield counter after any successful Shield, since you are invincible during the counter animation and shield counters will launch for a free counter hit combo.

Half- This style can only normal Shield, and it automatically shield counters for you.  Pretty easy modo.

Other notes:
-Shield multihit attacks with repeated presses.  If you can throw out a shield counter or a special with invincibility startup, you can use that after the first hit is shielded for a guaranteed counterhit, but otherwise you just shield each hit and counter with whatever afterwards.  Crescent moon characters with extremely fast jabs can just 5a after the first EX shield against a multihit attack.

-Shielding an enemy attack counts that attack as blocked, so they can potentially cancel that shielded attack into what it can normally be cancelled into on block.  In other words, it is possible to get an attack shielded and still get away safely (or counter with a reversal) if you can react quickly enough.

Thanks guys, exactly the kind of info I was looking for.  So essentially if I use crescent that is the closest I can get to a 3s type of parry style by using the EX shield since I can cancel into normals and specials.  This would explain why I was so confused before because I was primarily using Full Moon Rouma or Half Moon Roa and trying to following up my shields with normals.  Gonna try to work in that shield counter more since it seems pretty beast.  That takes 100% heat and kinda looks like a burst attack right?

As long as I don't need to take off the Friday I am down for that tourney.  I wanna play on that Mike Z cab.

Nah, shield counter doesn't take up meter.  It usually just looks like an uppercut of some sort on the ground or a quick poke in the air.  Just do 236D immediately after connecting with a shield and you'll get it.

The thing that uses meter...you might be thinking about the bunker (the GG dead angle type attack) that you can do during blockstun with 214D.

Also the one guy's name is actually Kouma.  Speaking of Kouma, you decided to try playing around more with Full Moon style after all?  The high level stuff for F Kouma is pretty demanding as far as execution requirements, but he's a pretty interesting character that works a lot around out-thinking your opponent.  Crescent and Half moon styles are a little easier for Kouma and are also known to have a better pressure game thanks to reverse beats and whiff cancels, but it seems like F Kouma is more rewarding if you can yomi the opponent.

Fixed.   ;D
I have much to learn.  Evidently I'm one of the few F-Kouma's in the west?  If I get good enough, maybe I can make people see why I like him.

No worries.  Turn out was not that bad and we may have gotten some possible MBAA converts.  All depends on how bad they took the beatings Prinny gave them  :psyduck:.  Either way I am looking to do a combo MBAA/BBCS tourney at the end of this month.  I will post back here with more details once I get stuff confirmed.

When it came to MBAA, yeah it looks like one of them was hella interested. He goes by ChristianCalim, and he's from the SRK group. He wanted to see a glimpse of high level play and I showed him just a little bit of C-Hisui. At the end of it, the man was sold and I gave him directions to hook up with this forum and to let us know that he's interested.

Other than fighting Macc with F-Ryougi, that's about as far as I took it...I figured it would be best to simply let people play and try it out for themselves.

Ok I talked to Bryan at GO and he cool with us running a tourney at GO.  He said just let him know a date.  So I am gonna post this here and on the Hakkenden site, which day works best for everyone to run this?  Its gonna be run on a Saturday and here are the choices:
March 27
April 3 (I am favoring this date)
April 10
Let me know what works best for everyone by this Sunday and I will set a date in stone.  I will need extra gear for this event.  Gonna also posted this on the Hakkenden site, but here is what I got:
1 PC with BBCS
2 fatty PS2s
1 set of PS2 component cables
1 PS2 memory card with Free McBoot
2 PS2 pads
2 PS2 sticks
1 PS2 to USB convertor
1 set of DVI to DVI cables (soon to have VGA convertor)
Since GO has all LCDs we need to have component cables for the PS2s or else we are gonna get lag.  Also we will need either VGA or HDMI computer cables to hook up any BBCS setups.  Since this going to be an all day thang with two seperate games here is the idea: Have two TVs for free play on each game (or pools if enough numbers show up) and one on the larger TV for the current tourney game.  Any suggestions, comments, player hating?  Hit me up.

Wow, that's dope.  Macc, have I told you that I love you?  Because I do.

I can supply one ps2+game setup and Joenell has ps2 component cables he can supply.  I can round up 2 pads for it as well.  Do you have a copy of melty for your setup, because I can also supply as many game disks as needed.

As for the date, I don't have anything on any of the above mentioned dates, so I'm good with whatever.

^^I have one copy of MBAA, but I got some DVDs so I can make a backup copy of the one for my other PS2 if needed.  From my experience we will really only need one memory card with Free McBoot since we can just boot into the game and then use the same memory card on the other setups the same way.  So far I talked to Prinny and Paine and they are both for April 3.

Sounds good then.  You'll need memcards with savedata for the game at least though, since the full cast is not unlocked by default.

Btw, to anyone who hasn't been notified yet, we're all getting together at Paine's place at 4pm tomorrow (saturday).  Text for address/directions if you don't know.  He's called me out on a FT5 match and I upped the stakes to include winner gets free dinner, so it should be something worth seeing.

^^There are a total of 7 TVs at GO and I want to have at least 2 TVs for each game.  I figure if we get a big influx of people in either game we can add additional stations.  That way it does leave some TVs open for other GO customers.  I will bring both my PS2s, my one memory card and two game discs.  I figure if you can bring an extra PS2 with a copy of the game we should be set.

Yeah, I got that.  You have composite cables for both ps2s though?  I might be able to get a second one.

Also what was that madcatz stick you were telling me about?  I was going to look it up today but forgot what it was.

Yeah I will need an extra set of component cables.  I currently only have one set.

As for that stick, here is the one I was talking about:

Down to 50 bucks now and its very easy to mod.
