Yes, 5C is usually omitted because it can push you out too far for the combo to continue.  For Ries and Kouma, 2C is omitted instead, since their hitboxes make 2C 3C lead to the grab variant of 623[A]

On Kouma and Ries 2C does not need to be omitted for the combo to work.  623[A] needs to be delayed after 3C on those two characters.    EX.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imjcxIkA5wM#t=2m10s

Hmm.  5C 3C 623[A] is still more stable on those characters unless you're spaced out a bit (drops at slightly closer distances than 2C 3C 623[A]), and does a bit more damage as well.
