BBG XIII: The Finale
« on: March 29, 2010, 04:30:21 PM »
Ok, we ALL knew this was going to happen. So here's the deal.

The On Blast tourney gave way to a place where we can actually have a consistent place to play INDOORS, so I would like to have one last BBG. The thing is I would like anyone and everyone who ever wanted to come down for one to do so. So I figured that having one in April is a no go and the only months I can think of having it is in May/June. If I can get a count for who wants to come when, I'll be able to make reservations ASAP and we can get the gazebo one last time.

BBG XIII, the BBG to end all BBG's?  :mystery:

Don't forget May is ECT and June is Andy's major in Queens.

I'm all for this though.

Hmm. Wouldn't it be better to do BBG after Evo? People are saving up money right now for it and such and we would probably only bring local people to us.

Other than that, I'm down for it.

I agree. BBG after EVO would make more sense for people saving up :/.

Maybe August or something.

This is pretty much what I wanted to hear.

More consensus on what month to have this would be really helpful. Thanks everyone.  :toot:

I always found it funny that the BBG series started right after I left for Arizona. Never did get to go to one. ;_;

Don't worry too much about me, as it would be an outlier regardless, and if it happened in September I would probably be out in Japan anyway. :3

BBG > All other tournaments.

Why play in some shitty rundown venue when we can play outside in beautiful weather.
25$ for the permit, but no entry fee for any of the players (and Tinshi's place might be raising the fee to 10$ lolllllll)
Plenty of food + CF nearby, plus the classic post-tourney AJISEN trip.

Like BBG has been staple of EC poverty community for past 2 summers, now niggas trying to forget about it and move into some dump like every other fighting game community? Fuck it, I'm going to Japan.

are you dumb... here's the problem with keeping on running BBGS

1. time constraints ( like damn 8pm and we done!!)

2. We can only do it in the spring and summer (possibly fall)

3. constantly fighting with other people within the gazebo (even though he had pay for this muthafucking shit)

BBGS are great... but we need to upgrade a little.. esp. since Melty is getting exposure.. people's know that BBG can't last forever...

Basically... kind of a big deal....

Can we still call it bbg if it happens on the other side of NY inside of the basement of a random game store?

Who cares call it Tyrant Tinshi's Testicular Tirade. The point is bbg is too much bullshit for the organizers. It was good when we had no choice but from the getgo it was only done because there was no choice. Dragging TVs into an area with no parking? Questionable staff? No fucking chairs? Fighting with random Tai-chi peeps who don't even have a license to be in that area?

We can't even stream from the bbg venue. Props to fox for wanting to run another one, after that let it die.

Pretty much this.  I'm glad Tinshi organized a solid event, but despite it being a bit of a bitch to setup, BBG is a whole shit load of fun.  No bulky ass tables/wire mess or anything to walk around, no one being pushed around, just the sheer wide open area itself, backup snapplemachine power supplies, and the open atmosphere (fresh air is pretty relaxing to game in).  It really brings out the atmosphere of a casual tournament.

Also where else are we gonna have single round/single elim 20vs20's?  Venue's want you out relatively quick after the tourney's over, if we rent our own place, we have no restrictions.  Not in support of ending it.  We got exposure playing the way we do, we don't need anything overly professional just to look good to others.  If that means I have to drag a setup, a bunch of wires, my stick and a mixer on a train and across NYC, than I'll do it.  MB Community should be able to compensate for stuff like that no problem.

With the emergence of a better local scene where I am (Xanadu) I don't feel as compelled to go to BBGs anymore, should they be run.
But not everyone is in my position so I'll shut up now.

Where/when ever it is, I'll go!  ;D

P.S.: While everyone is entitled to their opinion of the BBG, it's ultimately up to the people that run it. (Fox, Spooky, Tinshi etc) If they say this is the last BBG because holding it is a pain in the ass, and they'd rather have it in a more convenient location, then that should be good enough for anyone here.

BBG has so much culture and tradition!  Also, ending on 13 is either good or bad.  I gotta say that I would prefer it over some cramped underground thing by 1000x even if the venue is closed at 8-9PM.  But anyway, you guys run it so I got no basis to tell you how to run NY tourney scene.

I'll be there and we'll make this the best one.  IDC when it is, the sooner the better as long as it's not first week of May (finals) or August (probably abroad)

Ok, let's throw out pros and cons:

BBG

Pros:
- One of a kind tournament environment. When was the last time you were outside during a tournament?
- Chinatown Fair is right around the corner, so if you go 0-2 and don't care to watch the rest, head on over to CF to play otherwise.
- Plentiful amount of places to eat, and with a good variety, usually cheap too.
- No entry fee. Just money for the tournament.
- Classic post tournament gang up at Ajisen.

Cons:
- Limited amount of time to play. The electricity has been shut off at previous BBG's, and rushing towards the end can be a hassle.
- Limited amount of space. Chinatown don't give a fuck that you rented the place out, you will continue to have people doing tai-chi to your left, homeless drunkards to your right, and random folks show up just to fill up space.
- The hostels by the location are pure shit, and to be honest, not all that safe.
- Only usable in certain weather conditions. For two seasons of the year it's just far too cold to use.
- We must provide all the equipment. Rainy weather can mess around with the equipment as well.
- With technology being what it is now, being able to stream from BBG is an impossibility. The likelihood of someone taping all of top 8 is quite a push as well.
- No bathrooms available.
- Sitting on the ground.
- Must reserve a month in advance, making monthlies much harder to plan out.

On Blast

Pros:
- Easy to get to. One train ride away from Times Square (a 45 minute long ride mind you), but much easier to explain then BBG's location.
- Do not have to provide all the equipment , if any.
- Indoors, so the location is available for use all year around, rain or shine.
- Streaming is available and at good speeds too.
- Has options for food as well, very close by.
- Bathroom is available.
- We will be sharing the location with other people playing games, not exercising or excessively drunk (unless it's Jiyuana).
- Monthlies become much more easier to schedule.
- Can play much, much longer then BBG ever allowed us to.
- Chairs!

Cons:
- Entry fee. Five dollars for now, possibly $10 in the future.
- When people start packing it the places does get a bit humid / hot. Quickly.
- While options for food are available, it's the usual (McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts, etc).
- We will be sharing the location with SF4 players. Bastards.
- Tournament environment is nothing special, just the usual.
- No post tourney anything.
- No hostels or otherwise in the area, local hotels would be far more expensive.

The thing to take note of here is that BBG became an option because we simply didn't have any others available. BBG only had half its tournaments in the actual gazebo, the rest took place infront of Snapple machines in the lower end of the park. The resulting tournaments were great expierences, but in reality we've always been looking for another area to play at, possible to hold bi-weekly casuals or otherwise at. If this place had been found before BBG1 then BBG would have never existed to begin with.

Anyways I wouldn't mind moving all future events to Gamestation, but then I wouldn't mind holding BBG's at the gazebo and going to Gamestation during the fall / winter.

Speak up guys.

:p

personally i want to be able to get down on monthlies throughout the year.. and then alluva sudden.. see ya next year... esp. if we doing ranbats in a since.... it's better worthwhile to keep indoors and playing throughout the year..

am i gonna miss BBG.. of course.. shit had a lot memories.. but it's time to upgrade...muthafuckas shouldn't think melty.. and then put poverty in the same line... MELTY IS NOT A FUCKING POVERTY GAME!!!.. time to step it up...

Never been to BBG. If they have a finale I'll definitely go.

That said, On Blast apparently went very well and is something that can be done whenever regardless of weather. I'm totally down with driving down to NY for it, and I won't have to worry about some random BS ruining the tourney.

Seems like people are heavily in favor of monthlies at Blast :\ That's fine, but we don't need to end BBG because there's a new place that's a bit a less of a hassle for monthlies.  If that has to be the case, I think we should run atleast two BBG's (One for spring, and one for summer) every year.
