: Id_asz August 26, 2009, 11:49:13 PM
FFA is running BB & MBAA bi-weeklies!

You heard right, Melty Blood: Actress Again tournaments once a fortnight!
Thanks to the console release of MBAA, we will be running these tournaments on PS2s (Bring your own controllers!)

There is a similar thread discussion posted on dustloop.com

Location:
Family Fun Arcade
10363 Balboa Blvd.
Granada Hills, CA 91344
(818) 360-0419

Next tourney up!

Sunday, November 8th:

BlazBlue, Melty Blood, Guilty Gear and Twinkle Star Sprites:
MBAA: 1PM $3 per person
GGAC: 1PM $1 per person
BB: 5PM $5 per person
TSS: 5PM $1 per person

Rules:
MBAA:
2/3 Matches Double Elim
This will take place on PS2s so be ready to bring your own controllers.
Console exclusive characters will be allowed with the exception of Archetype: Earth.
The game setting will be Original type.
Character counter-picks are allowed on loss.
Switching moon types is allowed each match.

GGAC:
2/3 Matches Double Elim
Arcade cabinet only.
The cabinet has PS2 ports set for default PS2 controls ( □ = Punch; X = Kick; Δ = Slash; O = H-Slash; R1 = Dust)
Character counter-picks are allowed on loss.
Bring your quarters for the machine, it won't be on free-play, so FFA won't take any cut.

BB:
2/3 Matches Double Elim
This will take place on the arcade cabinet and PS3s (if we have a large amount of entrants). Be prepared to bring your own PS3 controller.
For PS3 matches, the game must be set to Arcade mode, so no extra Astral Heats for other characters or awesome Bang install music.
Character counter-picks are allowed on loss.
If you would prefer to play/not play on a PS3 let me know and I'll make sure you play on arcade/PS3 only (as much as possible).
Please bring your own joysticks for the PS3 setup! I have one to lend out, but not two.

TSS:
2/3 Matches Double Elim
This will be on the MAME 1000 games in 1 machine. This means that lag will be different than the original version.
All characters including secret characters are allowed.
Bring quarters!

If you have any questions let me know, I'll try and answer them.

See you there!

I would come down for these events if you weren't holding people back.  Next arcade revision is almost certainly going to include the new balance and characters, so why restrict it?  Isn't it proper to keep with the most current?  =\

If you're planning for these tournaments to be arcade-based, then that means you would have to change the game balance to Arcade. Though I can't say this with absolute certainty, I have a hunch that the majority of the players who have MBAA have been playing on Original balance because those same people probably never got to play the original ver.A arcade release. I don't exactly see any point in banning the console characters (except Archetype Earth, she has like 3-4 infinites or something) and the game is still very new. I think it would be a good idea to allow them and if it's very clear that they ruin the game, then go ahead and ban them. Otherwise, I think it's still too early to tell for the other characters.

^ This is basically my point.  The new balance is the current standard.  The new characters don't have anything broken with the exception of Type Earth.  Don't restrict pointless things or you'll just be isolating yourself from the rest of the scene.

Wasn't it already proven that the PS2 ver's arcade balance mode isn't fully accurate to the arcade ver anyway?

I wouldn't mind allowing console characters other than Archetype Earth.

Hi, I can only guess you're very inexperienced with how the MBAA community is running right now. Every tournament that has MBAA as an official game is running Original Mode, with all character minus Arc:earth being playable. The original mode will be the basis for the next arcade version, and the console characters are being allowed everywhere else (NEC, FR) by not allowing these characters you are hindering people who travel match up experience in a tournament setting. Not even 25% of the community for MBAA has probably even spent enough time on the arcade version to really tell the difference, or even give a hoot about arcade mode or not. This guy probably doesn't even care about the Melty community, based on his post count, and lack of a response in 6 days. If people actually want it to be ran properly, I'd suggest taking it upon themselves to run it.

p.s. If you want to run tourneys for games you're not familiar with, do research first, or ask for suggestions instead of blindly putting rules out.

Hey, sorry I haven't replied to any of you. Been crazy busy over the last week.

Yeah I am new to the MBAA scene (but I'm not new to the MBAC scene). I wasn't aware that the new version of MBAA will have the console characters and rebalancing fixes. Typically for most fighting games when new characters are added for console only those characters are banned, not because they're unbalanced, but just because they're not on arcade. For example, Guilty Gear tournaments have (typically) never allowed any EX characters to be playable in tournaments even though they are balanced.

BlazBlue is seeing this problem as well. There's new moves that are not allowed in tournaments because they aren't in the arcade mode yet. There's an option to play arcade style in the console version so that is always set.

For just about every fighting game I've seen, console exclusive characters have been banned (If there's an arcade version of the game to go along with it). KoFXI, SS6, SFa3G, GGXX, features in MvC2, the list goes on. SBO won't even allow anything console (because they run everything on arcade). But, things have been changing recently, SF4 console exclusive characters are allowed in EVO, and KoFXII console characters are allowed in tournaments too.

If most tournaments are allowing the new characters and team-ups, and the new version of MBAA will have this stuff, I see no reason to ban those characters, or stick to arcade style on console. If the above is true in your posts (which I'll assume it is) then I'll allow the other characters from console.

I'm not the badguy =P, I love Melty Blood (but I honestly won't be getting MBAA until tomorrow), I had just figured the rules for MBAA would have been the same for every other fighting game down the line so I didn't bother with research on it. I'm always open to criticism, so feel free to let me have it.

: LoliSauce September 03, 2009, 11:56:39 AM
Well, considering there's only been 2 or 3 accessible MBAA cabs in the entirety of the US, not many have actually had access to the arcade version to begin with.  After talking with a good amount of socal in IRC, they all agreed that the only thing banned should be Type Earth.

I'm glad you're willing to change to keep up with our current standard.  I'll admit, I was weary at first that you didn't really care about melty and were mainly running the tourneys for BB.  I'm glad to see that my suspicions were unwarranted.  I look forward to making it to one of your tournaments sometime in the next month or two (I'm a vegas local).
: Re: FFA BlazBlue & Melty Blood Bi-Weeklies - (Granada Hills, CA)
: Id_asz September 03, 2009, 12:29:57 PM
Yeah, if that's considered the standard, then we'll run it with console characters on original mode.

Like I said, I didn't even consider researching it because I thought it would be obvious that console characters would be banned. I was wrong and got flak for it >.<

The biggest reason why I'm doing MBAA bi-weeklies is to get more people into the game. I've been one of the top MBAC players at the arcade, but too few people were interested in the game. Now that MBAA is out on console I wanted to bump publicity for it so we can get more competition.

I will be too. Plus a bunch of casual players at FFA (who don't post here >.<). Namely I'm expecting, Soniti, Rex, Kro and Shin ATproof. I don't expect the turn-out to be more than the BB tournament, but it shouldn't be disappointing competition.

28 entrants, wow! Great matches to everyone I played. I know things got kind of hectic running two stations at once, but I think it turned out pretty well. I wasn't able to get a match count to let you know how well people won this time because I had to watch two stations at once.

Congrats on getting 3rd place Blue G., I always knew you'd do well if you entered.

Grats Mike Z. It felt like you were the underdog this tournament even though you always win. There's just something so right watching a Tager beat a crazy good Nu player.

For the first time in like 5 months we have another Carl player other than me! Sonic took out a bunch of players in the casuals, but lost early in the tournament. The two players he fought against were very used to fighting Carl in casuals, so that's probably what did him in. I hope to see you next tournament Sonic, you're a really good Carl player.

Holy cow Shin, when did you get so good with Haku-Men? I used to beat you all the time! Congrats on 6th place.

Tronzilla, that was a sick match between us. We must have timed out 3 times. For those of you who missed it, Tron and I were 1/1 on rounds and the time went out. We both had what looked like exactly the same amount of health, and we both held our breaths. Then I did my win pose >.<... Madness!

A whole lot of new faces today. Hopefully you guys stop by more during the week for casuals.

Melty Blood:
1st: Xie [C-Mech Hisui]
2nd: H-F Blade [c-Ciel/F-Ryougi/H-Riesbyfe] (lost to Xie in Winner's finals 1/2, beat Xie Set 1 2/1, lost Set 2 1/2]
3rd: Numakie [C-Hisui] (lost to H-F Blade 0/2; lost to H-F Blade 0/2)
4th: Id [C-Ciel] (lost to Soniti 0/2; lost to Numekie 0/2)
6th: Wicked Element [C-Miyako] (lost to Xie 0/2; lost to Id 0/2)
6th: Soniti [C-Akiha] (lost to H-F Blade 0/2; lost to Numekie 0/2)
8th: Ketuekigumi [C-Kouma] (lost to H-F Blade 0/2; lost to Id 1/2)
8th: Severin [H-Riesbyfe] (lost to Wicked E. 1/2; lost to Numekie 0/2)
12th: Oni [H-Roa/F-Ciel] (lost to DAN 1/2; lost to Ketue 0/2)
12th: Shin ATProof [C-Warachia/C-Aoko] (lost to Wicked E. 1/2; lost to Id 0/2)
12th: Tronzilla666 [C-Ryougi/C-Ciel] (lost to Id 0/2; lost to Severin 1/2)
12th: DAN [C-Red Arcuied/C-Kouma] (lost to Xie 0/2; lost to Numekie 0/2)

Great matches to everyone! Thanks H-F Blade for showing me some awesome Ciel combos, I'll have to practice them for the next tournament. AGnat, hopefully you can enter the next tournament, you're supposed to show us your awesome Neco-Arc Chaos skills!

DAN, I think you just got bad luck going against Xie then Numakie, in actuality you're probably better than I am (though I will admit I'm a bit rusty). Good luck in the next tournament.

Sorry for the lack of seeding during this tournament, next time that won't happen. I just seeded Xie because he was winning casuals against everybody and randomized everyone else. Next time Numakie and H-F Blade won't fight each other first match >.<

I wasn't expecting this big of a turn-out, to be honest. But the tournament was a blast, I had a lot of fun. I hope to see you guys again in two weeks. I'm really hoping that some of the BlazBlue guys start playing Melty Blood. I've already converted a few to the dark side  :V

Guilty Gear:
1st: Shin ATProof [Baiken]
2nd: Soniti [Testament/Jam/May] (lost to Shin 0/2; lost to Shin 1/2)
3rd: Almighty Gnat [Zappa/Robo-Ky] (lost to Shin 1/2; lost to Soniti 1/2)
4th: Tron [Faust] (lost to DAN 1/2; lost to Soniti 0/2)
6th: DAN [Johnny] (lost to Shin 0/2; lost to Soniti 1/2)
6th: Severin [Potemkin] (lost to AGnat 0/2; lost to Tron 0/2)
8th: Ketuekigami [Ky] (lost to AGnat 1/2; lost to Soniti 0/2)
8th: Id [Jam] (lost to Shin 0/2; lost to Tron 0/2)
9th: Oni [Chipp/Ky] (lost to Severin 1/2; lost to Soniti 1/2)

I suck at GG >.< You totally didn't deserve 9th place, Oni, but I guess the random.org gods smote you. I'll be practicing my Jam a bit for next tournament, I'm not horrible, but I'm not half as good as I am in BB or MB.

I will prolly be driving down to enter in one of these sometime down the line.  2 weeks is prolly not going to happen, but in a month?  That could be realistic for me to come down.

I'm surprised to see a C Miyako up in the ranks!  Rep the loli Wicked Element!

Since MBAA came out I've been working on some more characters. I've picked up F-Ciel, F-Satsuki, C-Arcueid, C-Riesbyfe so far. I'm going to start practicing my comboes and game theory for each character. I was dropping way too many combos during the tournament >.< I'll try and fix that up for the next one.

GGs everyone on Sunday!

I can't play pad at all, and I can barely play stick.

I always bring my PS2 stick with me to lend. For MB I play pad, but I figure other people would want to use my stick.

I'm gonna try and make it up for one of these in October, but I'd like to go when there will be a lot of people attending.  Would you guys be more likely to be there on Oct. 11th or 25th?  Also, I'll need a place to crash the Saturday night before the event, so could anyone lend me their couch?

I've been practicing my F Miyako a lot lately, so watch out for those loli elbows!

Congrats to everyone who entered the tournament. Especially Render for breaking Mike Z.'s (What was it, 5?) tournament win streak. Will Seung ever come back from where he left to?

It was nice seeing 3 Carl's up there, thanks ZONG for repping Carl.

Crazy good matches all around, especially the Bang Bang Mirror (BangC and SDCT), Soniti vs BGarbage, Tron vs Mike Z., AGnat vs Mike Z., and Render vs Diar.

Thanks to the two ladies who entered the tournament, Mel and RSheller. I hope to see you again next tournament.

Had a surplus of Jin players this time, 4. Usually we only have 2.

I had some fun casuals after the tournament, too. GGs Ike Takeda and Bang Camaro.

The next tourney will happen 10/11. IDK if it will have teams or not, I've been asked that a few times already. Hope to see you all then!

Guilty Gear (AKA Pay for Mike Z.'s BB entry fee):
1st Place: Mike Z. [Potemkin] (Didn't lose one match)
2nd: Diar [Baiken] (Lost to Mike Z. 0/2; lost to Mike Z. 0/2)
3rd: Shin ATProof [Baiken] (Lost to Mike Z. 0/2; lost to Diar 1/2)
4th: Baddexample [Sol] (Lost to ShinAT 0/2; lost to Diar 1/2)
6th: Siaga [A.B.A] (Lost to ShinAT 1/2; lost to Diar 1/2)
6th: Batsu [Order-Sol] (Lost to Mike Z. 1/2; lost to Baddexample 0/2)
8th: Almighty Gnat [Zappa] (Lost to Baddexample 1/2; lost to Siaga 0/2)
8th: Id [Jam] (Lost to Diar 0/2; lost to Batsu 0/2)
12th: Raptor [Chipp/May/Ky] (Lost to Batsu 0/2; lost to AGnat 0/2)
12th: Jason D. [Axl] (Lost to Diar 0/2; lost to Siaga 0/2)
12th: Soniti [Testament/Jam/May] (Lost to ShinAT 0/2; lost to Id 1/2)
12th: Tronzilla666 [Faust] (Lost to Badd 0/2; lost to Batsu 1/2)
15th: SDCT [Baiken] (Lost to Id 0/2; lost to Jason D 0/2)
15th: Oni [Chipp/Ky] (Lost to Siaga 0/2; lost to Soniti 0/2)
15th: Mel [Anji] (Lost to AGnat 0/2; lost to Tron 0/2)

GGs everybody. Especially the three guys who came together (Diar, Siaga and Batsu). We had a really good turnout for GG, 15 people.

We were supposed to use this tournament to find out who had gotten better AGnat, but we both tied for the same place >.< I'll beat you next time, muahaha (strokes evil kitty). I wasn't expecting to get nearly as far as I did, and it ended up holding the wait for the BB tournament to start, lol.

Oh yeah, big thanks to AGnat for running the tournament, he did a really good job.

GGs Soniti, that was a really close match. I learned a few things when I played you on Friday, and when I watched you play Jam during the tournament. Without those I probably would have lost.

We had some exceptional players today, really fierce competition. I hope to see you guys again next tournament. And maybe some new entrants (It's only $1!).

Melty Blood:
1st: Xie [F/C Neko & Mech] (8 points)
2nd: Diar [H-Aoko] (6 points)
3rd: Id [C-Ciel] (4 points)
4th: Raptor [F-Sion] (2 points)
5th: Oni [H-Roa/C-Ciel/H-Ryougi] (0 points)

We ended up round robining because of the lack of entrants. I'll probably make it a $1 tournament next time to entice more people into entering.

I did practice over the last 2 weeks, I swear! Just, not with my main >.<. I'm trying to get used to the PS2 controller (I'm not going to use this as an excuse for losing, but let me say it) and I kept rolling my inputs instead of going to 5 first before switching directions. That kept messing up my combos (and made for some very unopportunistic supers), so I usually ended them quickly with a throw just so I couldn't fuck anything else up. I'll practice more and do better next tournament. GGs everyone, especially Xie.

Better luck next time, Oni. We should get together and practice some. H-Roa seems like he has a lot of potential, and that EX Haloish super of his could be really useful.

Congrats on the win, Xie. Good to see somebody using Neco & Mech, lol. IDK if they'll end up being as good as your regular C-Mech (which is crazy good), but they seem to have some decent potential.

If any of you guys didn't enter all three tournaments, practice for the ones you didn't enter in! MB is a really fun game (don't be intimidated by the higher up players, I sucked up and entered GG and actually did pretty well). It just takes some practice, but all-in-all it's probably the simplest of the three fighters. It focuses more on footsies and game theory. BB and GG rely more on heavy skill of game mechanics (esp. BB).

Crossposting from socal thread.

I'll most likely be going to one of the FFA tourneys, but I'm just waiting to hear some feedback on whether more people will probably be going on the 11th or the 25th.  I wanna see a decent turnout when I come down!

Google Maps says I'll be going along this route (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Las+Vegas,+NV+89108&daddr=10363+Balboa+Blvd.+Granada+Hills,+CA+USA&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&sll=35.04349,-117.020874&sspn=3.264847,4.938354&ie=UTF8&ll=35.133387,-116.828613&spn=3.310567,4.938354&z=8), so maybe I could carpool some other people there if they're not horribly out of the way?

Whoever brings in brownies, I'll pay for your entrance fee... Brownies are good.  :toot: (No pot brownies, though, they don't taste very good).

And Xie is a crazy good Mech player, I can't touch him (even if he is using Meko&Neko).

I fixed the first post for the next tourney. It'll be same time/price as the last one (for MBAA), but if you're coming for GG or BB, some of that stuff has changed, so check it out.

I might need someone to help run the MBAA tournament (maybe Soniti) if I run the BB Teams at the same time. We'll see how it goes, I usually get plenty of volunteers when I do something like that, so I'm not worried.

Okay, I'm not coming this weekend, but I'll be there on the 25th.  I'll prolly be bringing along a friend or two as well.  I'll post more details as they're solidified.

If it ends up just being one friend and I coming out (or just me, for that matter) would we be able to get a place to stay over Saturday night (the 24th)?  If I end up having any more people come with, we'll prolly just stay at a motel so as not to be a bother.

Howdy! Sorry about the lack of attention I've been giving you guys recently. Been very busy with school and all sorts of stuff. But you don't want to hear my problems, here's the schedule for 11/8:

MB & GG: 1PM
BB & TSS: 5PM

I'll fix the first post to reflect the new tournament in a bit.

There is also a big tournament coming up on December 19th and 20th, I'll post the details of that very soon.

Fix TSS so you dont lose 3 hearts when getting hit once  :psyduck:
Getting hit twice and dying is  :emo:

Just get your opponent hit to get your hearts back ^_^

It does kind of suck when you're hiding in the corner when that one specific group comes up right there, and knocks you twice right into an opponent's mob.

There's some good TSS comp growing. I had a couple 140+ sec matches. I'll have to start practicing again  :slowpoke:

After a taste of getting First Place in TSS I'm not going to give it up easily. Bring it on!

I'll show you that cute little puffy furballs are better than two little cutesy faeries any day! That's how hardcore TSS is!

You only get first when I'm not around.. funny how that works. :blah:

Only the panda character (Marin I think her name was).

The Boss characters are playable in the arcade through a code and are tournament legal.

It seems weird that they're tourney legal.  I mean, I guess they weren't horribly broken, but mammory and bat boy were noticeably better than the rest of the cast.

Also, I don't remember the panda character, so I must have been playing the arcade one all this time.  (is dc vers same as arcade? I think we were playing on that, but it's been a while)

Tinker & Linker >> everyone else.

Memory's charge shot on the outside seems good, but in reality you have no control over what you shoot. Mevious's charge shot isn't very good, and his special bats don't stay on the screen very long at all. I made a tier list in a different thread of a different board, let me go find it...

If I had to make my own Cali Tier list for TSS, it would probably be:
S Tier: Tinker & Linker
A Tier: Mackey & Pentell, Nonja Monja, Mevious
B Tier: Sprites, Memory, Griffon, Really Till
C Tier: Arthur Schmitt, Load/Dark Ran, Kim
D Tier: Yan Yanyan

That would be in order (So M&P > NM > Mev, etc.).

The only things you really need to consider are a character's charge shot, their movement speed, and their special attacks. Virtually everything else pales in comparison to those three things.

T&L has probably the best charge in the game, pretty good movement speed, and one of the best specials in the game. M&P and NM are pretty good at everything but movement speed, and Mev has good movement speed, but a poor charge (and decent offensive specials).

P.S. I've never played a non-arcade version of TSS, but I think Marin was on the Sega Saturn version of the game. They probably carried her over to the other versions, but idk. I play on MAME and Neo Geo. The Neo Geo version has lag and lag effects, while the MAME version doesn't. So if we were to get super pro tournament style we'd have to play on the Neo Geo board only in order to get true arcade perfection. But we're not going to, the MAME version is fine.

P.P.S. "Meirin" is Saturn only. Just double checked.

Just to make sure I haven't forgotten, Till is the dragon girl, M&P is the two girls with those chompies and they ride a pen, Kim is nekopunch bot, and Yan is...piggy girl?

And yeah, fairies have dumb good charge shot.  That was the one thing that kept me going back to them.  Her specials are that great?  I guess I wasn't really on the receiving end of it very often (usually my buddy would play Kim/Till/Arthur) so it's a little hard for me to judge.  For some reason I always had the hardest time dealing with Till's dragons and Memory's hard to see random ass cake pieces or whatever.  It's funny, my two favorites were the fairies and M&P, with the fairies superior speed barely giving them my top spot.  Somehow I feel like a tier whore.  lol

Till's dragons aren't too hard, usually you can just move up or down a little bit to dodge them. The problem is when you get sandwiched by two of them. Mem's cake is kind of annoying because they like to appear right where you are, but once you get used to it they're easy to dodge, don't stay on the screen very long, and have small hit boxes. However, when Mem gets a charge shot she shoots out 4 instead of 3 specials.

With T&L, M&P and Mev, you can charge your shot and let go on the border of the screen for instant specials. Nonja Monja's specials are good, but not really deadly. They're the best when you're trying to get the upper hand in pacing because they block all shots so you can't shoot what's behind them.

T&L = twin faeries
M&P = two bounty hunting girls who have a stuffed teddy bear, ride a giant pencil and shoot chompers
RT = girl with green highlight bangs and rides (and shoots) spherical dragons
Kim = Cat sage who rides a mechoneco and shoots little cat treats. His specials are cat-missles.
Yan = Girl with pigtails who rides a pigusus. Her specials are actually pretty good because they're kind of unpredictable, but her mov. speed is horrible and her charge shot is horrible.

When I first started playing I mained Arthur, but then I had problems controlling how far I move because he has the fastest mov. speed in the game, I'd always overdodge something and hit something else. So I switched to Nonja Monja because of its specials. NM moves kind of slow, but still fast enough to dodge everything. Mevious is faster and is my secondary when I feel like being more offensive.

If you want to bring in the Neo Geo board that would be awesome, Kemi! We can swap out the Puzzle Bobble cabinet like last time.

You use T&L, right? Kemi's crazy good, so you'll have to practice a lot.

I've been out of practice because I havn't had to practice much, but I'm trying to step it up for this tournament.
