: Tokyo Game Action's Ranking Battle 2-3 (MA, 4/14/2007)
: Dipstick March 26, 2007, 06:37:04 PM
The results keep being random, with two new people (KoreanDJ and Spic Tom, local SSBM players from MA) winning the last ranbat. However, this tournament was absent some of the region's best players (and not so best), so this tournament should have different results yet again.

Who will win? :mystery:

For Sp00ky/Zar/Chibi: This event is two weeks before Showdown Championships, not one.

Address:
"Tokyo Game Action"
5 Summer Dr.
Winchendon, Massachusetts 01475

Date & Time:
Saturday, April 14th, 2007

$20 dollar cover ($5 dollar increase from last time; this is a one-time change)
$2 to enter most tournaments (3S is $5)

Melty Blood is part of the lineup here, starting at 7 PM. The tournament is run on ver.B arcade cabinets, whoop whoop.

Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection
Hyper Street Fighter II: Anniversary Edition
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core

-Winners and Losers Finals will be best 3 out of 5.
-Grand Finals will still be 3/5 (only game like this :V).
-You are not obliged to stick with the same character throughout the ENTIRE tournament. You may switch up at anytime except when you win a match. If you lost a match or your about to face a new opponent, you may choose to stick with the same character you've been using or another character.
-If you lose, you can change your team/character. Winner must stick with the same character until he loses.
-There are to be NO GAME FREEZING GLITCHES IN ANY GAME. If you do I'm going to kick your ass! (And by I, I mean Gavin) Plain and simple.

t1st) Zar (10)
t1st) KoreanDJ (10)
t3rd) FecalPenance (7)

Unrakned players (or anyone out of the top 4? 8?) will be randomly seeded.

Directions:

From 95 North, take EXIT 6B towards 495 North.

- From 495 N, take EXIT 29B, then that'll be Rt.2 WEST. (20-30 min drive)

- From Rt. 2 W, take EXIT 24B, then tha'll be Rt.140 NORTH. (10-15 min drive)

- From Rt. 140 N, keep going straight down for about 15 min.

- Eventually you are going to run on a little bridge with a pond on your right, from there take a RIGHT onto Beech Street.

- At the end of Beech St., take a right onto 5 Summer Dr. and you'll see our beloved Tokyo Game Action.

Sadly, they took the video equipment out of MB:AC and stuck it in CvS2. Who the hell plays CvS2? :( Hopefully someone will bring a camcorder and record on their own.

I was surprised at first seeing SSBM players winning the last one only to find out that they played a bunch of newbs. Get out there and show them that MBAC is a game they shouldn't be winning at so easily. >:( I get the feeling they're on smashboards saying how MBAC is so easy to pick up and start beasting. Keep them out of the top 5 please. <.<

ps melty blood is trash super easy trash I SAID IT

: Bchun
who said that shit melty blood is to easy i ranked top 8 at nec and i started playin the day before its to easy lol

: Echoes of PAIN
: ill_will
what i am thinking now is that the problem with MB is that its so easy to pick up that scrubs can compete at most levels what I think is missing from MB I think is that there must be a sort of game changing strategy that noone has hit yet that will just completely change up the whole dynamic of the game.
like honestly with MB all I did was throw it into training mode and figure out a couple combos and block strings and throw setups and see how the parry timing works and i can compete
really i wanna see some of the mb crew get me with some hot shit so i get my mind changed about the game.

copy and paste for speaking DA TRRRRRUTHHHHH!!!!

Yeah. It's from SRK, but whatever.

If that's how it is at SRK, then it's MUCH worse at smashboards. I remember when KDJ won that other ranbat some months ago and he was broadcasting it to them. What he left out was the fact that there were only like, 4 participants. *shakes head*

You guys should beat them down so hard that they'll consider outright quitting. Do ANYTHING but let them have an easy road to glory. I can guarantee that here on the west coast that no pro Smashers will be defeating me or any other experienced MBAC player for that matter. >:D

Well then, get out there, and WIN! Don't let it happen again. >:(
The problems are two-fold:

1) I'm not very good at the game. Even in a neutral situation, I would be nothing more than a small favorite against someone like JJuice or Korean DJ.

2) I have a tendency to come up small in the biggest situations. Counting on me to do much of anything is just asking for failure.

Onlookers are going to see the points accumulated through the ranbats and see that KDJ is tied with Zar and as a result, think he's on par with him. That's FUCKING WRONG in every way imaginable. If I see either of them or anyone else bragging about their rankings at those scrub tourneys, I'm going to start throwing the facts out and shut them up.

It's not worth it. Me and Zar know whats really up. It's more enjoyable to let them keep their false sense of hope.
When TGA isn't located someplace in the asshole of America that requires public transportation + driving to get to then you won't see junk like this or their 3s tourneys happen.

Those are some fighting words, Sp00ky. :V

In other news, from a random post on TGA's forum from Pestazoid (http://www.tokyogameaction.com/forums/showpost.php?p=30832&postcount=6):

I don't know which to go to the smash tourney that Korean[DJ] is going to have or the TGA tourney which has MB:AC and stupidly good food ahhhh the decisions. I hate when things that I love are on the same date son.

Lame.

Sp00ky: That's the thing though- TGA needs the business to eventually be able to move to a better location, as well as having a shiny track record for business history so that cities will approve their game center permits. If they do eventually make it to NY, it'd be the best thing ever for the EC arcade scene.

and Smash players ALWAYS THINK THEY'RE the HOTNESS... but knowing if they played any other fighting games other than smash.. it's pretty much game over!!

I love crushing egos too, but I'm not hating. -_- I'm just very upset about how they had such an easy climb to the top of the charts and, as a result, how it will give a lot of people a skewed sense of reality. But also, maybe I just have a little too much pride that I would never let a competitive Smash player defeat me at one of my own games, which would uphold my little theory I have about them.

Ironically, after talking to some Smash players (thanks to that Wobbling thread) it seems more and more of them are coming onto this game. I asked around as to why, but noone was able to give me much of an answer, it's just ending up that way.

Lord knows if I can get XAQ to shell out $100 just to go to this.

: Re: Tokyo Game Action's Ranking Battle 2-3 (MA, 4/14/2007)

It's probably because they're bandwaggoning with 1st grader logic: [dumbjockvoice] Oh duhhrr, KDJ, someone who has almost no experience in other fighting games, is dominating at MBAC. Maybe we can too. duhhrr [/dumbjockvoice] KDJ's ranking could also incite just the opposite but the latter seems more predominant.

I'm surprised that's not happening over here in Cali considering that the Smash scene here is pretty big which could possibly lead to a higher likelihood of assimilation. But that's not happening afaik and I guess that's a relief. Our scene is fine without them imho.

See, this I don't get.

I don't really care if they come from playing Smash Brothers, Virtua Fighter, Tetris, or just picked up the game because they like Akiha's delicious flat chest. Whoever is better is better, regardless of their background.

It seems like you have a problem with some combination of their God-given talent and the inherent weakness in the scene.
: Re: Tokyo Game Action's Ranking Battle 2-3 (MA, 4/14/2007)
: Arlieth Tralare March 30, 2007, 12:41:54 PM
Well, part of it is that H-F Blade would have an inherent advantage because of his knowledge of the game engine and its quirks. Overheads that hit in 10 frames or less in MB would be very difficult for 3s players to adapt to. As for Smash, there's so much about the engine that doesn't carry over that I can understand H-F Blade's reasoning.

On the other hand, I say bring 'em. More money in the tourney pot.

in all honesty, i'd be kinda pissed if a smash player beat me at mbac especially since it's one of the few games that i've dedicated a lot of time to. the people from their scene that i've met just pissed me off to no end. "Smash is the greatest fighting game ever. And it merely happened on accident." "If it's not Smash, it's not a fighting game." "I don't like lifebar fighting games because they're over too quick." you know what that is? Bullshit. redundant, annoying, factless BULLSHIT!

The guy who introduced me to MBAC was one of america's top Armored Core players, lolz

As for H-F Blade's attitude, I kind of shared it, at least for a while. I mostly train with Heartnana from SRK. He is a 3d guy and since comming to japan his main game has been Arcana, but back in the states it was Naruto 4 on the GC. It took me a long time to swallow the fact that he was just a flat out better player than me at fighting games, seeing as I only started back in fall semester. For a while I was really pissed about how I couldn't beat him consistantly at "My Game" but now I just say w/e and realise that it's free melty with a cool dude and we're both getting better. it's pretty lol tastic when we go to the arcades and beat every one off the machines, and then the other doesn't want to pay for the match we've played like a million times for free in his dorm room  :D

nah smash is just a really different game... it's fighter in it's own way... but it's definetely not a traditional fighter... and there a lot stuff in smash that just don't make sense in other fighters..most smash players can be pricks... like philly ones but meh.. oh well... im not saying a smash player can't do it... it's just little more of the attitude of the smash players that i hate the most... almost like the DOA community..lol
: Re: Tokyo Game Action's Ranking Battle 2-3 (MA, 4/14/2007)
: COD3player April 01, 2007, 08:55:58 PM
Exactly. I'm not hating on Smash because I play the game (haven't played competitively in over a year though), but what I do hate is the attitude that they adopt towards traditional fighters. imho I don't think I should have been reprimanded so quickly for my rants because it's not senseless hate and there was clear reasoning for doing so, as Arly clearly explained earlier. But yeah, Smash is the kind of game where practically no gameplay mechanics (or some very obscure ones) would transfer over to a game like MBAC. Hence why I would be disappointed if someone like KDJ defeated me because I had a lot more knowledge and experience with the game as opposed to the few sitdowns he had with it. That's what I meant when I said I had a little too much pride because I wasn't trying to place myself on a pedestal or anything.

well i know you weren't hating on the game... but honestly the smash community is filled with hate alot... i don't know... i tried it... it was moreso it's community than the game itself that i didn't like... but meh...

Yeah, I hear you. It's not the game but rather the attitudes they have about it that invite a lot of hostility. But I don't think it gets any worse than where I live because we're like 10-15 minutes away from Ken. This is part of the reason why I went on such a long hiatus with the game. :-\

When the hell did I ever refuse to play stick?

If I'm able to use a pad, then I'll use a pad, otherwise I'm quite fine using a stick.

:P
dude, you're such a fucking liar. there were plenty of times where you got fed up switched to pad out of frustration/lack of comfort. if you were truly 'fine' there wouldn't be any need to ever use pad, right?

Man if there was anyway you could use your old Saitek you'd be using that shit, don't lie.

And what I said is true, if I'm able to use my pad, then I will use it, but if I hit up TGA or don't have pad then I'm fine using stick. I'm better with pad, but I'm not a completely lost cause with stick. At the moment I don't have one to practice with anyway.

ERRRRNNNNTTTT!!! I-N-C-O-R-R-E-C-T.

As tempting as it may seem to you, choosing a saitek over stick would be -EV for me considering the fact that mb is gradually becoming more tollerated(?) and accepted in other fg communities.  Its only a matter of time (got $$ on next yr.) before the population accumulates enough ppl for it to be deemed 'worthy' of an 'official' SBO qual.

And do you know where those quals will be held? Youd best believe that TGA will be a likely candidate =D.

And do you know what TGA will be using to operate mb on? thats right, ARCADE CABINENTSSSSSSssss! And arcade cabs have *gasp* -omg- STICKSSSSSsss.

Assuming you got really chummy w/ your trusty non-stick peripheral, conveying muscle memory or whatever you may have learned will not be a simple task because....ITS MELTY BLOOD......ON STIIIICKK!

Play on a saitek? why the fuck would i do that to myself? so i can not compete to my fullest when it comes time to collect that dough?

awww sorry chibi, your inference was wrong but you do win the consolation prize....INTELLIGENCE. what he will do with it folks...no one knows.

Xaq just get someone to vouch for you and there ya go... MM made... money made...

i have friend kinda of like that... he's freaking good but need some money to do some money... so i vouch for throw up some money in his place... so that's what peeps need to do... well that's how i did it in tekken anyway.. should be the same...

and Smash players ALWAYS THINK THEY'RE the HOTNESS... but knowing if they played any other fighting games other than smash.. it's pretty much game over!!

some go represent the MB players!!!

wow I have to say that is not true at all if anything alot of smashers love this game and seeing as we are quiet big it could help enlarge the scene alittle.

Dipstick and to anybody else those mm's that korean makes he does them all the time to anybody even if he loses.

This is spic tom but that is my smash name my name for all the other scenes is king dooky. I am goin to the TGA tourney so I will see you there.

I only have a vague idea of where all of this animosity for Smash players is coming from. There is this perception (real or otherwise) that after you won the ranbat four months back that there were many :blah: from people on Smashboards about how the game is easy, how the 'top players' in the game were an utter joke, how I should die in a fire (oh wait that was the #meltyblood people talking), etc.. I can not find any actual first-hand evidence of this, however -- just a lot of second-level (or greater) references. Then again, if I read Smashboards for more than 2 minutes my brain explodes. :-\ So I have no idea what the actual truth there is (and again, it's highly likely that other players were talking shit but neither of you had anything to do with it).

With that all said: KoreanDJ, entering the Melty Blood tournament at Anime Boston?  :V

D) Money Match

I have no hate against Smash either. I enjoy the game, though I'm not very good at it.

Personally I'm trying to find the connection between Smash and MB, I've asked some other Smash players why it seems that MB is gaining some popularity in their community, but noone's been able to give me much of an answer.

And I ask that out of curiousity, not out of spite or anything, I'm just not seeing a connection here, but hell I can't complain, right?

They have NO similarities whatsoever. That's what I'd like to know too because I'm a rather curious person myself.

And KDJ, I would play against you if I didn't live so damn far away. :\ I plan on going to Evo (not 100% sure yet) so if you do too  we can play there.

Apparently a lot of the original MB:AC players in Japan came from SSBM, and had been playing React on the PC before that.

Not that such a statement helps any, but it does not seem limited to just the US.

As much as I hate to say this word, you're lucky that you've had whatever success introducing it to Smash players in your area. I live in an area where talking of other fighting games is unheard of unless you want to be crucified. I live 15 minutes away from Ken so I'm guessing everyone here is Nazi over Smash because they want to stay on a competitive level due to our proximity to the world's Smash champion. This isn't to say that I haven't tried, because I have. Needless to say, I've had no such luck at all. :\

WORKING ON IT THX

East coast isn't the only scene that matters anymore!

And I will say a lot of local Smash players, while they like what they see, aren't all that interested in getting serious at Melty Blood. Wakkatana and Ch405theory are two locals who are really interested in getting good and promoting the scene, but considering how popular Smash is here in AZ (it's up there or above Third Strike), that's not too bad.

All right, let's not get ahead of ourselves here. It'd be hella awesome to get the smash community to join us, and vice versa (imho).

MB should be at Evo East though that depends on whether or not I'll be going to the WC next month. Or not, someone else could take care of it of course ;p.

I'm pretty sure Veteru will be running MB at Evo Worlds though, like last year.

Look I saw the game and thought it was fun because of the characters and the weird shit that they do. Then I saw chaos and wanted to play the game because he shoots deer at you and uses a snake but I call it the titty chomp because it looks like someone chompin on a titty. There are many fun characters to this game that I could pick up not because of tiers but because there fun in general even the ones that are top are just fun man. Unlike the other games where the scene is just top tier whores and the game ends up being predictable on who's going to win. So I have been asked by people to teach them this game from the smash community I got one guy from PA asked me to teach him how to play but I didn't have a copy of the game so if we were to expose it then yes I think this scene would be alot bigger but under the criticism that smash endures.

this is a VERY oversimplified statement and it clearly demonstrates how little you know about other fighting games. if you think a games like virtua fighter or guilty gear xx slash are games reduced to tier whoring then you are sorely mistaken. and you do know that 90%+ of mbac's system borrows stuff from guilty gear right? of course you didn't, that statement up above is proof.

and i find it very funny that this is coming from a smash player because outside of marvel, there's probably no other fighting game where tier whoring is more evident than in smash. 98%+ of the nation's best players use characters who are in the top 5 either as main or as a secondary. and the fact that there are actually low tier tourneys is lolz.

As an Interface 3s player, one of the things that really weirds me out when I go play casuals or ranbats at FFA is the amount of Alex/Necro/Hugo players there. Also, I'm pretty sure Ty made it to Top 8 with Alex a few ranbats ago, Sanchez made it to Top 12 with Alex last time, and Adolpho made it to Top 8. Also, I believe Combofiend made it to Top 12 using Oro last time.

Hell dude, I'm pretty sure I made it to top 16 with Alex one time. Zantua made Top 12 with Yang. Tiers are not the end all.

13 people entered this tournament (I think we could have a few more, but the amplifier for the mic died and a couple of people completely missed sign-ups because they were playing other games).

1) Zar [Aoko]
2) Master Chibi [Hisui]
3) Duppy [Nyanya]
4) Tinshi [Shiki]
t5) King Dooky [Nero]
t5) Kayin [Nanaya]

We have some hand-cam footage (without scanlines but not without Chibi's massive balding head) that will be going up in the coming days. After watching the end of my match against Chibi, I started peeling the skin from my body and shocked myself into a coma for several hours. It was that sad. :(

:blah: and footage to come; I'm going back to bed.
