cross post from Shoryuken:

Arcade UFO and Smoke 'n O's present . . .
Arcadia UFO 2009 - The First fubarcade Major
April 17-19 2009

Greetings!

It is with great honor that we will be presenting a new annual tournament series in Texas with the hardcore fighting game community in mind. While most tournament series in the U.S. now focus on "console" with an "arcade" afterthought, this tournament will be especially for those players that prefer to play in a head-to-head Japanese arcade environment. However, that doesn't mean that there won't be a place for console fighting gamers. Read on!

What about SBO?!
While this line-up is incidentally very similar to SBO's line-up, this tournament is not affiliated with SBO, Arcadia, or Enterbrain in any way. In other words, this is not a "qualify for SBO" event, and if there is one, it would be held at a later date.

What about that "other" tournament in Texas?
We're not competing with other events; we're all in it together, after all. This was the best time to hold a "major" with the plethora of other tournaments popping up in 2009, and we made sure to schedule it for a separate weekend from the other Texas tournament. In fact, we encourage you to come to both if you can--they're only a week apart!

Details and BYOC Area
For those haven't seen Arcade UFO yet, it is not a big place. Therefore, we are planning this event with the following main goals in mind:

- As little overcrowding as possible
- Running one game at a time whenever possible
- Finishing promptly (10pm-ish) to give everyone a chance to go out or play more casuals at night
- To have as much fun as possible!

We are going to try to have a TV or projector screen set up outside to see some of the action to encourage viewers to use the patio. We're also partnering with Smoke 'N O's, a hookah cafe right next-door. Smoke 'n O's will have a BYOC area set up for players to bring consoles/TVs, and everyone will be welcome in the venue for the entire weekend to play free casual games. Arcade UFO's games will still take coins like normal, but will be on Free Play / Event Mode for tournament matches. If the players are split between both venues, along with Arcade UFO's patio, we should have just enough space.

Of course, all matches in the Top 4 or Top 8 of each tournament will be recorded via direct-feed and uploaded to the glorious Internet. There might be a DVD or something, I don't know yet.

!!IMPORTANT!! BYOC AREA HOURS will be approximately 10AM (when events begin) to 9:00PM only. Smoke 'N O's has requested that we end BYOC at 9PM sharp nightly in order to accommodate their business and regular customers. Arcade UFO will be open until 4:00AM Friday/Saturday night and 2:00AM Sunday night as normal.

-------------
Arcade UFO is located about 10 minutes away (by foot) from the University of Texas, and is nestled in a small shopping center in between a largely student-populated residential area.

Austin is a GREAT city, plus we should be in "perfect weather mode" in April (not too hot yet). The nightlife here is popping. Arcade UFO is in central Austin, and there's a bus stop right in front that can take you downtown which is lined with bars and clubs, if that's your thing. There are some more low-key (but popular) alcohol/coffee spots within walking distance of the venue.

Ok with that out of the way, I finally got a response from Fubarduck (through Pfhor) and he is allowing us to run a MBAA Ver.A unofficial tournament although I'm pretty sure he told you guys the news on IRC yesterday. As you know the cabinet WILL NOT BE ON EVENT MODE DUE TO THIS BEING UNOFFICIAL SO IT WILL BE PAY PER PLAY ($.50) and as far as the format goes I want people who are going to make the decision of having it 1v1, 2v2, or 3v3. The tournament itself will be ran on Sunday so it will give people who haven't played the game two days of practice (Unless you're NYC or Austin  :P ) So with that out of the way...

Melty Blood Actress Again Ver.A
$5 entry fee per player (If players want it raised higher I'll raise it to $10)
System: Head-to-Head cabinets
Date: April 19, 2009/Time: 10:00 PM
Format: TBA

This will most definately be the first major MBAA tournament so lets kick it off really strong and get HYPE!

SAVE YO QUARTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

Let us begin hype.  :toot:
: Re: UFO Arcadia 2009! MBAA Ver.A Unofficial tournament
: Pfhor January 20, 2009, 04:00:21 PM
I'd say the best way to do this would be splitting it between 2 days after 10 PM when the tournaments are over. That way we won't get in the way of the official tourneys and players in said tourneys won't have any conflicts.

Also make it 1v1.
: Re: UFO Arcadia 2009! MBAA Ver.A Unofficial tournament
: jiyuna January 20, 2009, 08:07:06 PM
1v1, and even though he says he wants tourneys to end at 10pm, I'm 100% certain things won't work out that way (especially because it's arcade tourney).

Just have MBAA whenever but be ready to wait for people to finish their in-progress matches; this will be fun but I don't see how serious it can be since most people have next to no experience with the game.  :toot:

This sounds like it would be fun, even though most of us have 0 experience in MBAA. I wouldnt mind going if some of my WC pals came with to share room expenses, or I could share room expenses with some other people that are already going. Do laptop casuals and a hookah bar mix?
: Re: UFO Arcadia 2009! MBAA Ver.A Unofficial tournament
: pbj_mixxa January 21, 2009, 08:03:04 PM
I say make it 1v1 coz I ain't sharing my winnings with NO-ONE!

So... does this mean wc is actually planning to make this?

[EDIT]  You sure we can't all just front some money on fubar and request the machine be on freeplay?  It's just too damn inconvenient to run a tourney dropping quarters.
: Re: UFO Arcadia 2009! MBAA Ver.A Unofficial tournament
: Spidey January 21, 2009, 09:01:48 PM
I would be a horrible representative for the wc, i just wouldnt mind going cause i can afford it and it would be fun, I just hope some of my wc pals will come with me.

: COD3player January 21, 2009, 09:22:58 PM
I'd like to go but I dunno if I'd have the funds to go when the date rolls around. :( And yeah, having to plunk quarters into a machine for a tourney does sound pretty inconvenient. :\

Alright so I finally got a response from Fubarduck regarding having it official or not:

Hi Brandon,

I'm glad to hear that you have so much interest in MB.  However, to be quite honest, there isn't an Austin MB crew.  The game is pretty much casual play only (even though it's Actress Again, and yes, we do have the version A upgrade.  I haven't installed it yet, but I doubt anybody will notice when I do).  Most of our hardcore audience has chosen to focus on the other titles.  I think Houston has 2 or 3 dedicated MB players and Dallas has 1 or 2.  Needless to say, I think you would be disappointed with the current level of MB play in Texas.  If we held a tournament for it, you'd really just be fighting against yourselves.  You could probably hold a better tournament (with greater turnout) at Chinatown or similar.

The reason we're limiting the number of games for this event is that UFO really is extremely small.  Fate has more interested players in our region and people can actually play it all over the state thanks to the console release, which is why we opted for that.  I don't hate Melty Blood and I really wish it got more play here (that would definitely revitalize my interest) but for the purposes of the event in April, there will not be a tournament for it.

We're trying to schedule everything so that the tournaments all finish before it gets too late because our peak business is from around 10:00PM to 2:00AM on weekends.  We would hate for local customers to be discouraged by the overcrowding of another tournament during this time slot, and of course, we depend heavily on these times to carry us through the week.

Thanks for your great interest and I apologize for not being able to give you better news.

Best,
Ryan

Now we can still do w/e we want with the cab (except not have it on freeplay mode) so from the looks of things it will still be PAY-PER-PLAY and it will start at 10:00 PM sharp.

Eh, Ver. A was installed today.

One of the guys in charge of the arcade (not Fubar) doesn't like the game and said today he's pissed off that they spent money on the machine. Don't count on MBAA being permanently there after the tournament is over, though I guess it really won't matter once everyone leaves after the tournament ends.

It makes more money than Death Smiles and probably ST but ST is ST so it has to stay.

I can still see them taking it out to put back in their GGAC machine, or making room for a 4th SF4 machine (it used to be 2 sets of head to head cabs, now it's 3 cabs on rotation since they took one out for TvC). Or they could put in FUC or something, you never know.

How much did MB cost them in total and how much did ST cost?  I'm guessing something like 500 for st and 3000 for mb.
: Re: UFO Arcadia 2009! MBAA Ver.A Unofficial tournament
: Ultima66 February 07, 2009, 09:51:17 AM
Yeah there's a couple of machines that cost them really low amounts and they're considered classics so they're never getting rid of them. There's one with a bunch of really old SNK games that's a quarter that never gets played, a Twinkle Star Sprites machine next to it that also never gets played, and one with Puzzle Fighter. Then there's Death Smiles that people play less than the other 2 Cave shooters for whatever reason. And two Initial D machines I've never seen anyone use, but it's an arcade it might as well as have a racing game.

Melty cost 1400 or 1600. I don't remember, but the guy mentioned it. I met someone else who used to play Melty a little and he says he would have cared about the game if ver A had come out a month earlier in Japan, but as is, the late release of ver A killed the game. And besides, between the few people who actually play Melty, we can't have a serious game without making fun of HURRR 2A, but that's sort of just us. Whenever asdf lands 2A in BlazBlue or 2LP in SF4 we say we're playing Melty too.

May have to put my plans for a trip to AI in April on hold, this looks enticing. During my short time at MBAA at AI, I figured out that I am now garbage at Ciel on MBAA but Chaos summons in FM mode is good to work with. Kinda want to see AH2 in action too. I might make it out to this provided I've got the funds.

From the looks of it MBAA will most likely be 1v1 until the day of when we decide last minute it'll be random 2v2....assuming we have enough people for either format.

Does it look like enough people are going? I am not sure I will have the funds for this but you never know. I am also getting my fill of MBAA here at home :P (directed toward brandino)

Ok so what I have in mind is that we should all fly in the same airport so it won't be too much of a hassle to meet up and w/e. Also, Voomer is reserving a room at Rodeway hotel if any of the MB players plan on going to this and need a room then it'll be fine.

PS...there will be S!AH2 and F/UCK...JK...no seriously I'm bringing my AH2/JP PS2 and anyone else can F/UCK if they want.

PSS...Also Voomer hates Sardining so he would prefer only 5 people in his room, but he can take in a couple of stragglers if needed.

Hmmmm let me check on funds and airline costs. But seriously who all is going, I wouldnt mind flying over there to hang out etc if enough MBers came.

According to both MB players on both SRK and MBread (and voomer) head count we have:

Brandino
Jiyuna
Voomer
Pfhor
Kurum
Master Chibi
Spooky
Nas
Kurii
Multi
D'Nyc3
Ultima
ShinMasaki

Most of these are confirmed, a few are tentative atm.

Ok so whoever is planning on staying at the Rodeway Inn Fri, Sat, and Sun and also needs a room we are willing to accept no more than two people. It's first come first serve so if you're interested then PM me or Voomer.

One spot taken. One more left.

I really wanted to go to this, but I don't think I will make it.  75% chance I won't be there, that leaves 1st place up in the air.  Sorry Pfhor I know you wanted me on your team if it goes into 2v2 or whatever.
