I wish melty would use filters
« on: July 25, 2009, 09:47:47 AM »
I wish MBAA (pc version?) would use hqnx or similar filters.  I think they work pretty well due to the simple clean lines in the MB sprites.
Its getting hard to sell MB to people when the sprites are so lowres compared to the background.

The image below uses:
http://scale2x.sourceforge.net/index.html
iirc I prefer hqnx, but the result should be somewhat similar.

Not much of a difference imo. Though it makes the sprites look cel-shaded and I hate that style.

Do you mean, you hate line-art style, you prefer dot-art style?

Since a 2d anime style game is, by definition, in a cel-shaded style :)

Also the sprites seem ok on their own, but when you put them up against the higher res backgrounds that MBAC has, they look really out of place.

Wow this is awesome.  Is there any way of going about and doing this?

Honestly speaking, I'm indifferent about it, I see no real reason to change it as it looks fine already. Hell, if anything, I prefer the original version better, the new style your showing looks...messy.

Yeah, I originally was trying out Scale2x on KOF12's higher res (but still pixellated >_<) sprites, and the results are very good in my opinion.

But for Melty (and older KOFs, etc), the sprites are sooo low res that these kinds of filters do tend to damage some detail (especially faces/eyes), make lines look blobby, etc.

Whilst I think filters on KOF12 gives a definite better result (although some people still disagree, ingrates!) for a game like Melty it's more of a tradeoff and personal preference.

The ideal solution (if Melty's sprites are low res because of artist workload, and not memory capacity etc) is for them to apply the filter to their raw sprite data like I did, and then get an artist to fix up any lost details, shonky lines, etc.

This should be a less-work way to decently scale up all of their sprites, without losing much visual quality.

However, even just adding this filter to MBAA in software as an option (like how you can press F12 in MBAC PC) means that people who prefer this look can enjoy it, and people who prefer the original look can enjoy that.  Everyone wins!

I'm sure we can all agree that these sorts of filters look better than the blur filter used by MBAC when you press F12, right?!

Melty's sprites are going to suck forever and ever. No amount of filters or blurs will ever save them. :psyduck:

the second is way uglier imo.

mb is still pretty well animated at the very least. The sprites and designs are realllly basic but better than having stupid OTT anime designs

I can see the benefit of using filters but it doesn't really make that much of a difference. I wouldn't notice it if I was playing.

A lot of people who play 2D fighters actually like that pixely look (as you can see from most of the responses, I guess). Personally, I wouldn't mind some filters. I mean, side-by-side in stills, the difference is minimal, and all it really does is smudge the original, but don't think it'd look so bad in motion. Options are always good, though, so I wouldn't mind  :slowpoke:

I honestly enjoy the horrible Melty Sprites. They make me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

the first looks better in my opinion, HOWEVER...i think what would make the sprites look better would be if you used a Ciel sprite instead. That would be much better. or a Ryougi.  :fap:

I'd have to see it in motion, but usually my opinion on filters is they just make things uglier and uglier.

I think the problem with these filters is that they smooth the lines, yes, but in doing so make the ACTUAL lines/outlines for the art look big and fat like they're done in finger paint because normally at a higher resolution the lines/outlines are thinner than that, so it looks even weirder.
