MBAA Sprite Resolution?
« on: January 28, 2009, 06:36:35 AM »
Does MBAA have higher resolution sprites than MBAC? Or does it retain the same res to reuse sprites?

I wish japanese fighting game makers would hurry up and discover 2xSai (or similar) already *cough SNK cough*.

Also, MBAA does reuse all of the sprites but that says nothing about the resolution the game is actually running at since we've seen already that the previous games had them scaled up 2x to fit the 640x480 screen.  You can put money on the aspect ratio being the same though.

As for using a filter such as 2xSai, that may seem fine to you but in practice it makes sprite art look like a piece of shit, especially when fine details are involved.  Things like that are much better suited to larger images, such as 3d renders or photographs.  Plus, filtered sprites would stand out greatly against a well detailed stage such as the ones MB uses.

The thing is, when we use something like 2xSai as a post processing filter, sure, it makes faces and other details a mess.

But the developers can run the filter on their original sprite data, and then get their artists to clean up / redraw the faces and other small details.  (so the filter is not actually running in-game.)   It would still need a bit of manpower to do it, but only a little, and nowhere near as much as redrawing everything like KOF12.

Especially for a game like MB, where the characters have large areas of colors and clean lines, I think running the sprites through a filter (and then cleaning up where necessary) would work really well.

It's a shame that MB is quite nice graphically, but the sprites are just so blocky due to their age.  I was hoping they'd do something about it in MBAA.

In many ways, games like KOF98 dont seem as bad (or maybe I'm just so used to it) because everything is at low res.  But MBAC's low res sprites on higher res backgrounds look rather jarring.  (same with KOF98UM on PS2 with the 3d backgrounds.)

Again, I really wish they'd discover 2xSai already :P   Used carefully on their original sprite data (rather than slapped on afterwards in the game code) it can do a lot of good imo.

I'm pretty sure pretty much all the "new" sprites remain non upscaled, since there's a lot more detail on quite a few of the "new" attacks, and Roastbeef and Roa are in significantly higher quality than everyone else.

Hmm, watching videos, most characters have new attacks.  So three possibilities:

- New attacks are drawn at old, low resolutions. (ie upscaled).  = Ick.
- New attacks are drawn at new, higher resolutions. = Mismatch between certain frames/animations.  Also ick.
- Everyone is at higher res. (supposedly not, according to you guys).  = Wish.

First one, I guess. Since the engine is modified as well, the screen zooms out if the range between the fighters gets large and zooms in if it gets close. This was also used in BigBang Beat. So it's just that both normal size and scaled up version are actually used in the game.

Oh, I didnt notice that it zooms in and out.  I guess that would tend to disguise the sprites' resolution a bit.  I feel better :P
