Thinking of picking up a stick...
« on: September 01, 2007, 09:06:12 PM »
I just recently purchased MBAC for the comp, and as it's my first fighting game on the computer I was thinking about picking up a stick (currently using a Logitech Dual Action...*shudder*), and I was wondering what you guys would recommend. First I was thinking of a HRAP2, but a quick check on playasia made me think that one of those might be a little too difficult to obtain, so I was thinking of possibly an X-Arcade Tankstick since it already has USB support, but yeah, I duno. I'm kind of new at this, would someone mind recommending some sticks and linking to where I could pick them up?

Do you plan on using it on PS2 as well?

No, no I don't. In fact I only have an X360 in terms of consoles. :P

If you're willing to drop $80+shipping, the VSHG is a pretty damn nice stick.

Only issues as far as using it with PC seem to be that the stick is mapped to POV/hat input, which some games don't recognize (but can be fixed by using Xpadder or Joy2Key). However, MBAC recognizes it right off the bat, so... win.

Then just get a HRAP3? They're plug and play (or so I heard...I'm waiting for the SA edition release on the 20th). Or a custom one...I don't know, some people seem to prefer them.

Oh ya the VSHG works too =)

Hey, that thing kicks ass. I wish the DPad on that was on every controller I used, ever.
Playing: Arc, Kouma

Top: players just play the fucking game instead of asking for tiers. Low: players ask for tiers.

I second this statement.

As mentioned above, the VSHG and HRAP3 are both excellent choices.  If you go the HRAP3 route, I suggest switching out the buttons for Sanwas as opposed to the Horis they come with.  The SA will come full Sanwa, but I'd personally get the normal version and swap in parts myself.  Could be cheaper depending on what prices you pay and you get to chose your own colors.  The VSHG already comes full Sanwa.

I actually own both.  Can't say I prefer any one over the other.

Duly noted, yet I'm not sure why the D-Pad on my Logitech is being praised, the thing is so fucking touchy my characters end up bouncing all over the screen. Trying to pull off an Arc ends up looking like I just stepped into a bouncing castle.

you should consider what type of stick and buttons you like.  do you like wide-swinging american or small, delicate japanese style?  also consider whether you play better on a square, octogon, or 360 gate.  if you don't mind spending time on making your own stick, you can purchase wood from home depot or something to make your own case, order the buttons and sticks online, and butcher your logitech for the board and cable.  it'll end up being quite a bit of work but totally worth it for some money and creating a stick tailored just for you.

just suggesting a possibility.  it is a lot of work

Just wondering, is there that much difference between stick and keyboard? I'm currently playing on keyboard, but I'm thinking about getting a HRAP3. Is it worth the investment?

I played some stick and pad today. And from this experience I can conclude, after being a long time keyboard crusher, that pad = meh, and stick = awesome. Stick just felt so amazing. If you have the money, go for the stick.

If you do get around to picking up a stick, you might want to try a more local retailer... :V

Umm I can make you one, if you so desire.

Ill get around to my Sion stick eventually ;), but I make custom sticks. And they are far superior to any retail stick, however you do pay a premium.

This is also a reasonably priced solution, and it should work fine for both PC and 360.
