Worth learning to play with PS2 controller?
« on: February 01, 2010, 07:28:43 PM »
PS2 controller is finicky and dumb and hurts my thumb, but it's all I have for now. If I'm going to learn how to play should I learn with PS2 controller or wait to get a better controller?

Also what are some good controllers for once I get more money and can buy one?

your choices are a ps2 controller... or a stick...

in terms of pads i guess theres like the saitek pad... i dont think you can get sega saturn pad... every pad warrior uses like a ps1/ps2 pad though

Yeah, but aren't there different kinds of sticks of varying cost and quality? What are some good ones to look into?

Also my perception was that skilled people used sticks. So I was thinking "if I get used to a pad or something, won't I have to relearn the muscle memory at some point", so I was wondering what people's experiences were with switching from a pad to a stick, or if sticks were really as much better as I'm imagining them to be.

It's easier to play on stick 'cause of all the button pressing you might have to do but that's less of an issue in Melty because there aren't that many rapid inputs nor simultaneous inputs.

For Melty I'd say it's more about movement like doing superjumps or maybe tiger knee motions.

PS2 sticks afaik are no longer manufactured, or at least the premiere HRAP2 isn't. Your best bet is to get some random stick like the TE or the HRAP3 and mod it.

I recenlty purchased a PS2 stick, actually. They're very rare though. Check Amazon for any HRAP2, or try this link: http://www.toysnjoys.com/access_ps2_2c.html

What's a HRAP2?

What are these guys using? http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/6195/mbcontroller.png

Is it this thingy that you linked me to? http://www.toysnjoys.com/psx2/mayflashuniveralarcadefightingstick.jpg

EDIT: Wow, there's a lot of different PS2 compatible sticks on that site. How do I know the differences in quality and such?
Also what kind of thing do they use in Japan? I'm curious.

Honestly the only PS2 stick I recommend are the HRAP2 (HORI Real Arcade Pro 2) simply because of durable case and its parts. I'm too lazy to go in detail here. The HRAP1 is fine too but it's hard to find.

What's also a good choice is the HRAP2 rereleases ie the T5 edition, AH, FUC etc...

Any other stick you buy will just be for the case so you can mod it. You want Sanwa parts and a decent PCB (printed circuit board)... ok I wonder if theres an SRK thread I could direct you to...
