So there isn't a set "standard strategy" that each character has that everyone uses. I would like to try to play other people (if I could even get NetPlay to work, that much I havent figured out) but I am afriad of getting in a match and making a complete fool of myself because I don't know what the standard thing to do is.

Kohaku's Magical Garage / Pretending I know what I am doing...

Ok, let's pretend for a second that I know any essentail techical knowledge I need to know. I know what a mixup is, what Okizheme is, I know all of my character BnB comobos, both in corner and out, I can TK anything I need to, I know good block strings, I understand any commonly used vocabulary in Melty

... ok, I still don't know how to play. If I look at a video of two people playing, sure I know HOW they are doing something, but I don't knnow WHY. For example, I was watching a video of M. Hisui against Sacchin. I saw M.Hisui using jetpack, just one after another, not moving, no other attacks, just jetpacks as fast as she could. I get what this accomplishes, it is anti-air. She is doing this to keep her opponent from jumping at her. But why do this? Is this what M.Hisui is always supposed to do? Is this the commonly accepted strategy, would you look stupid not doing it? How do you know where to be, when to attack, when to turtle, when to pressure, when to jump, dash, walk, anything? In other words, technical knoledge I can learn, but what do I do with it? This is the brick wall I get with every fighting game, I know there are certain techniques I need to memorize, but what do I do with them?

So people dash back and forward to zone so that they can poke at each other?

hmm weird way to put it, but yes the point of poking is to do a move that will result in either an advantageous position for you or for the game to stay in neutral.

and back dashing and forward dashing is often a mix of escaping your oppentents attempts to trap you into guessing their block string, and you trying to force them to do the same, a poke is a move that doesn't need to be in a block string and will be just fine out on its own.

So how do I know when do zone in and out trying to poke and when to be aggresive trying to use pressure?

I know this is probably a really common term, but what is a tick throw? Also, what is a poke?

I saw term this in a guide for Akiha, something about "EX cancelling" her EX 623C for some a throw set up. This was on the Akiha strategy board.

I am still learning it too, although mine is becoming more consistant. I didi 2369A slowly at first and then I realized you can do 2368A quickly without doing a superjump, so I do that now.  Still try it slow first. If it's still not coming out, try to get it to the point where instead of the ground version, you jump and do an A, at least then you have it in the right order. Speed up it from there.

Its the same exact stick as the DOA4 one.  I like it but mine has some issues with hitting 9 propperly dunno if its just my stick or if its a design flaw.

So far I haven't had any problems hitting 9 but I haven't had mine long enough to really say for sure.

This assumes you are playing the PC version of Melty. All wired Xbox 360 controllers work as PC gamepads, not just the standard 360 pad, but everything. There is a wired fighting stick for the 360 made by Hori:
http://www.hori.jp/us/products/xbox360/fighting_stick_ex2/index.html
I bought this today with the intention that I was going to use it to play something on my Xbox 360. Then I remembered that it could be used as a PC gamepad. I have been using it for Melty and I really like it. The button layout can be mapped so the controls are arcade perfect for Melty.I got mine for $60 and that's not a bad deal considering what you pay for a custom stick or something like that. If you are looking for a stick and are fine with the Japanese style ones, this might be worth looking into.

Isn't it in japanese? If it wasn't I might buy it.

I actually really like Melty now being supported by Xfire. I have had Xfire for awhile and when I started playing Melty, the first thing I thought was, "There's no way Xfire would ever support a game like this." But I was wrong. Now I can keep in touch with my FPS playing friends while playing Melty. Sure, I am at a little of of a dissadvantage because I am at a fighting stick and not my keyboard, but I can pause and get to my desk to type. I think I am going to put my Xfire miniprofile in my signature now.

I do not claim to understnad this game very well or be an advanced player so I can't get into specifices on why, but I have alot of trouble against Miyako.

this IS a forum about a specific game.

This is a harsh truth.

Ok, your right, sorry wont happen again.
Other people did say different things though.

I just think it would be odd to just play one genre of games forever but from the way people talk, it seems like some people do.

tk means tiger knee dunno why its called tiger knee but it just is

the objective of a tk is to do a special attack in the air at the smallest jumping height
Please note that this only works for special attacks that are done in the air

to do this you just need to end with up at the end of the command

so as zaelar explained, to tk 236(assuming your character has a j.236) all you would have to do is 236 9/8/7 button
to tk 623 all you would have to do is 623 9/8/7 button
to tk 214 all you would have to do is 214 7/8/9 button

Please note that the timeing to press the button should be around the second you are in midair
and since this is meltyblood, you may get a super jump (2...9)
to make your life easier with some of the tks in meltyblood end with a 6 or 3 after the 9

Ok, so how am I supposed to tk anything without super jumping?I try to 2369 in pratice and I just super jump over and over again.

It is an Akiha combo. What does the "tk" mean?

Technically you're doing 9656, but thats not important for the topic.  It doesn't matter how you do it, it's just what you get.  If you can get it to come out the way you want using your method, then theres no problem.  Remember, you can also do 4/6+a+b to air dash, but if you can do it fine your way you don't need it.
Actually, I didn't know you could 4/6+a+b. That sounds much easier. How does it work if there is no second 4/6 to dash with?

Kohaku's Magical Garage / Instant Air Dash question
« on: April 11, 2008, 10:20:09 PM »
I read the forum in the "Game Mechanics Refrence Thread" on instant air dashing. From what I gathered the accepted way to do it is 6956 (or 4754 for a backwards one, assuming you are facing right.) I have been practicing it this way and I think I am starting to get it. Then I tried to do the obvious 966, I figures this would make me jumpt to high which is why the previous technique is used. But I did this and I don't really understand the difference. It was much easier and I really didn't notice a difference between the 6956 and the 699 other than that I could do the 699 much more consistantly and easily (same goes for the 744.) So why is that not considered an instan air dash.

All of this really does help alot. There are still some concepts like spacing, overhead, and anti-air I don't understnad, but I will try to look those up I guess.

But there are some weird terms(weird to me at least) like "negative edge" that many tutorials I see already assume I understnad. Maybe that is a standard fighting game thing but this is the first fighting game I have ever really wanted to learn and understand, not just play casually.

I just started playing this game a few weeks ago. I have a joystick (an X-Arcade stick, it works for me and I have it configures to what I think are the standard arcade controls) and I play Akiha Tohno. I can get through Arcade mode on difficulty 4, probably 5, I did with Shiki(I started with him). I would like to get better so I found this website. I really don't understand alot of this. What are some basic terms and techniques I should know about because the stickies confuse me. I understand some of the move notation but I don't understand what a "j" means or brackets. Can anyone tell me where to learn some basics?
