ok it's time for another one of my real talk posts

brandino needs to use less words and be a bit less faggoty, but i get what he's saying

i admire his passion, it just seems like he picked the wrong game to care about.  ESPECIALLY with all the new shit coming out - between SC4/SF4/HDRemix/Blazblue/T6/TvC it's going to be hard for other stuff to catch on.  MBAA, the arcana heart update, KOF12, whatever.  you also have to keep in mind that a few of the older games are going to stick around too (GG & marvel mainly).  so yeah, there are going to be a lot of issues with what to prioritize at tournaments, and good games are going to be left out.  nobody even knows when MBAA's hitting console anyway, and it won't get as wide of an arcade release as T6 or SF4 or probably even Blazblue.

also, west coast has always been capcom country anyway.  the hype level's fallen off for GG too.

Now then, to shoutouts!

Spooky - Thanks once again for hosting and everything else you've done for us!  That match against Sphyra was great as well.  And we can't forget Ninja Warriors!

Zar - Damn that Aoko scares me.  Enjoyed our matches, and I know you'll come back strong next time!

Sphyra - I had briefly seen you play at NEC, but had no idea how good you actually were.  Good stuff in the tourney, and I liked watching your matches with Zar as well.

Baod - Too bad we didn't get to play much, but it was nice meeting you.  Just gotta get your execution on point.

Jiyuna - This was your weekend, holy crap.  Great job in tournament and Kouma mirror match beasting.  Blitzkampf is fun, I should actually play it. =P

Lord Knight - The biggest surprise of this tourney for me.  You've stepped it WAY the hell up since I'd last seen you play, much respect!  Also I like watching items Brawl. :3

Chibi - Good seeing you again as always.  With SNK right now I think we'll just have to focus on 98UM, maybe a couple older games if that.  I mean hell if CvS2 and ST are gonna die, I don't think RB2 can survive.

Zaelar - Props on beating Sphyra, and many thanks for helping to run things!

pbj - You own, end of story.  Leveling up in Melty, too, I see...

Brandino - You know I've still got the no homo <3 for ya, bro.  See you at SB3!

Sorry if I forgot anyone!  This was a fun weekend even though these weren't my serious games.  LOVE the outdoor setup - wish you could do that with other games besides PC doujins...

Thanks again,
Josh.

brandino needs to learn that this ain't all official like DOA or Smash

like this coalition shit what the fuck thats not how i roll

back in the day for guilty gear i was a part of something called "team serious" but it was just an informal group of friends.  i imagine team spooky and whatever else are the same way.  there's no roster and no million-dollar contracts here.  so constantly bringing up the coalition irl seems real out of place.

basically what i'm trying to say is chill the fuck out.  for example, play casuals on stick, because nobody gives a flying fuck who wins or loses in casuals, so you can use that as an opportunity to level up and eventually get comfortable with it.  same goes for any new/risky tactics you're unsure of.  casuals are not about "playing to win" so much as "playing to learn".

and saying all this stuff to defend yourself when nobody's actually even attacked you just encourages people to go after you, because they know you're the easiest nigga to troll.  it's like poker or politics - you never want to show weakness!

i get that you've actually been in "the scene" (i.e. going to tournaments) less than a year, so this is all understandable.  i've gone through a lot of the same things myself, so i'm just trying to explain how shit actually works.  it seems like you ARE beginning to grasp things, though. =)

best wishes,
josh.

Kix, you don't need God to accurately determine morality.  I don't have time for a huge post here, but basically:

1. The overall happiness & suffering resulting from a given action reliably indicates whether this action is moral or immoral, and you do not need to posit anything supernatural to figure this out.

2. Going off of the basic idea above, humans should do good things because they will leave a lasting positive impact long after we die and avoid bad things for the inverse reason.  "Now" is such a tiny slice of the human experience...the future is far, FAR more important.

It is a topic I struggled with myself for a long time before finally beginning to grasp things, but there are plenty of answers to your concerns.  The whole fine-tuning argument does not hold up well at all, either, unless you think all of science is part of some giant conspiracy.  And there is plenty of solid evidence against that if you decide to go that route.

I actually agree with you that moral relativism is a false and potentially dangerous route, but religion will not be the solution; it's had plenty of chances already and failed every one!  What we need is some sort of belief system tailor-made for human nature and based on skepticism, one that does not require any unrealistic behaviors like abstinence or fasting.  This has become one of my life projects, actually...

Respectfully,
Josh.

yo fuck this game learn super turbo

its not all fireballs you can rush down with the boxer & dictator and theres actually a good grappler (old t.hawk japan ranks him A class yes seriously).  you can get good in like a month (have to really practice the infinite tick-throw loop with hawk tho) and the online play with ggpo/2df beats the shit out of any doujin netplay.  plus hd remix is coming out and cammy & fei long are gonna be REAL good along with other characters that dont have a hadoken prolly, so you might as well start now!!!

But I love some of you guys anyway.  NYC crew, I definitely wanna come up for a weekend and show you some RB2 stuff, get in some ST with nohoho & co. and maybe even a little AH2/Melty.

Later everyone,
Josh.

Well, no matter how good anyone thinks they are, we all would still get knocked out first round at SBO, so we all suck anyways. And yes, this includes myself, anyone who may have won national tournaments, or large FT10 matches.

Seriously, why don't you guys just focus on getting better as a community instead of fighting all the time? Then again, what do i know about being good, im just a scrub... :blah:

p. much this

Also, bellreisa wins this fucking thread.  And if Brandon had beaten Choco but then, say, lost to Jiyuna in the tourney, I'd be saying the same thing.

I side with the Cannons on this one: Money matches are an easy out for people who've convinced themselves that they can't win tournaments.  As I recall (someone PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong), that's basically how they got started in Marvel - Justin & Sanford were guaranteed top 2 at any tourney they went to, so people looked for another way to make themselves "famous" (lol).

Honestly, if fighting games truly want to become professionalized, I don't know if that shit can stay.  There's a reason you don't hear about big money matches in tennis or golf...

OK, now to actually post about the tourney!  I was the small white guy playing Kouma, in case anyone doesn't know.

Pfhor & Voomer, nice meeting you guys, and thanks for showing me something that makes Fatal Fake look good!

PBJ, you're the best ever.  You should be at every major, this must become a law.

Real talk, Shinobi, you consistently bring the real talk.  Real talk!

Jiyuna, god DAMN you are scary, I've got too much respect for ya.

Xianoir, didn't get to see you play as much, but congrats on 2nd, and Len is evil.

Chibi, keep on playing dat SNK!  Maybe next time we could even get some Melty games - won't be trying any more hotel tournies anytime soon! =P

Rob, you're a god damn sexy beast (no homo), but you already know that.

Choco, you did what you set out to do, nothing left to say but "good fucking shit"!  MEESHUN KUMPRETE.

Jaxx, that was a good match!  DAMN THE ZOO AAAGGGGGHHH

Kurum, you killed me just as bad IRL as you did in netplay.  Need to get over the V.Sion hump!

And Brandon, we've already been through this, so I don't need to say anything more.  Great job in the tourney, now just focus on the game, level your shit up for next time, and stay strong.

Good times, everyone, and hope to see you at MWC!

Sup Mailorder. =)  I just wanted to say a few things re: your post.

This latest event wasn't about netplay.  Now, NEC...yep, that was definitely about the netplay thing.  But since then, people here have learned what's up; I'm actually impressed with how well the Melty community understands the value of netplay, compared to SRK.

The thing with Brandon is that after NEC he expected to be regarded as a top player, since a good number of the top players were there and he came out above them.  We talked about some of this stuff when I drove him back home today, but I think he didn't realize that new players rarely get credit right off the bat and you have to keep doing it over a period of time for people to buy into you.

Actually, he reminds me a lot of myself when I was around his age - cares a lot (probably TOO much) about the game and its surrounding drama, people's reputations, etc.  A lot of what pisses him off used to piss me off back then; it eventually drove me to quit gaming altogether for over a year, during which I gained a sense of perspective and realized how utterly meaningless most of this shit is.  I've been relating my experiences to him and trying to help him understand how shit works, so hopefully he'll get things figured out quicker than I did.

No one has told anyone rashreflection paid up.

Are you serious?  You walked right into my room and asked "who is rashreflection", and I gave you the $50.  I was the short white guy with the Nightwish shirt.

Quote
After jiyuna fucked around and lost, and people say Xian's performance the night before, disinterest all around.

lol "fucked around and lost"

Is this gonna become like the Tekken community, where every single loss ever is due to "fucking around" or "random bullshit"?

Also, the grand finals had to be played way early because of all the other stuff that ran late...but the LOSER'S finals was crazy hype shit.  And overall, those big screen matches got people OUTSIDE this community interested in the game - something that can't be said for all the IRC "hype" (a.k.a. dickriding and hating on your own game).

Whatever...

Where I live, almost no fighting game has had any comp, so I play what I like and seek to improve though netplay and traveling to majors.

My personal favorites:

Super Turbo
Real Bout 2 (easy to learn yet holds up very well at high level...still played in Japan to this day)
World Heroes Perfect (seriously, this game is like the precursor to Guilty Gear, I've even convinced Brandino to pick it up!)
Samsho 5 Special (this even got mentioned already, yay!)
GGXX (Slash was my favorite, though AC is no slouch)

I can give much more detailed info on the Neo-Geo stuff if anyone's interested. =)

Melty Blood Auditorium / Re: Convince me not to quit Melty Blood
« on: February 21, 2008, 10:00:00 PM »
Thank you very much, everyone.

In general, I eat lots of throws because I can't seem to get my jab out when people try them.  This gets me scared and I start trying to chicken block and OMG it's a 2A and I die.

After an airthrow at midscreen, I have trouble getting any real mixup.  People block my superjump->backdash, or jump around on wakeup if they see me try any other air shenanigans.  Vids will probably help a lot with this, so I should get studying.

I have no idea how to keep up any sort of extended pressure.  Any time I go to the whiffed 5A, people jump/mash out.  Again, vids likely come into play here.

When I see someone jump toward me, I'll stick out a 2B.  Then they airdash and get to use whatever crossup air move they have to start a combo on me for free.  The risk/reward on ground pokes in general seems really bad in this game, and my character has a pretty terrible air game, so now I'm seeing what you guys mean about just having to block a lot.

Alright, enough of this stuff...

To go even deeper, my natural tendency is to approach these games in the way Dave Sirlin describes in his CCC2 tutorials - view the characters' moves as rectangles, and use these rectangles to control the most important space.  I think what's unusual to me here is that Kouma's normals are very much in the traditional SF mold, yet the engine is much crazier and really throws off those core concepts.  I have experience in GGXX, but with ranged characters (Bridget, Potemkin, now Axl)...so I never fully understood how airdash impacts the game.

I'm not going to quit the game, and I'll stick with Kouma.  Just got a lot of hurdles I need to get past, since this entire experience is so different from anything I've ever tried.  Maybe watch jpn matches frame-by-frame or something...and realize that this could take some time.

Thanks again, all,
Josh.

Melty Blood Auditorium / Convince me not to quit Melty Blood
« on: February 20, 2008, 06:07:45 PM »
Hello everyone...

I've been playing this game for a little while now, because it's the only game where I can actually play someone good IRL, and I'm growing frustrated with my lack of progress.  I don't need any bullshit motivational speeches - I need some answers, or (preferably) some idea of how to find those answers myself.

Specifically, I play Kouma, because I despise the entire moe aesthetic and he's the best available antidote to that.  I've always liked grapplers, as well, so I figured he would work.

However, it seems like in half the matchups I just get completely shut down.  Characters like Ciel, Nanaya, Len, & Satsuki seem to outprioritize every single one of my normals, and the likes of Warc/Nero/Aoko/Mech keep me out forever.  I honestly have no idea how this character is supposed to be high-tier at all, especially considering that I don't see him do much in Japanese tournaments.

Usually I learn games quickly - only GGXX and VF gave me problems like this.  Am I just approaching this game with an entirely wrong mindset?  I airdash around and try to poke when it looks like they're within range, but usually they jump over my pokes and get free combos thanks to my horrible recovery.  Maybe I should just never initiate the attack with him, but wait until they whiff something?

Or should I switch to another character to learn the game?  I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance, and see some of you guys at Final Round,
Josh.

Akiha's Tea Room / Re: Arcana Heart coming to PS2.
« on: February 06, 2008, 06:31:04 AM »
Zar, Chibi, et al:

I think the reason Arcana's enjoyed success as quickly as it has is simply because it's promoted by an SRK mod/Capcom OG.  In particular, it's hard to think of any reason Marvel players would try the game, except Art's street cred.

And the mod support creates an environment heavily slanted toward the game in question - for instance, I recall polarity being banned from SRK very recently for some shit talk toward Arcana (standard stuff, too, nothing really crazy).

Heck, Guilty Gear initially got big for almost the exact same reasons, actually, with tragic in Arturo's role.  He made his own separate forum for the game, but the rest is pretty much identical.

Melty, on the other hand, never received any support from major Capcom heads (IIRC) until Arlieth came along, and he's not really "OG" like the others mentioned. But if you'll notice, the game has been growing since then...biggest side tourney at Evo, outperformed the pre-reg numbers at NEC, etc.  As someone who's been trying to help SNK get the love it deserves, I think you guys should be proud of what you've already accomplished!

And one last note: Just on a hunch, I don't think Melty or Arcana will ever get into Evo.  Art would know about this better than I...but I know inkblot has called Arcana "the child molester's fighting game" before, and overall I get the impression that the Cannons feel the same way I do: That the loli games are bad for the image of fighters as a whole, and will ruin their chances of drawing a new audience.  Again, if I'm way off on this, feel free to correct me by all means - that's just how it seems to me at this point.

Later everyone,
Josh.

Kouma Kishima / Re: Kouma Matchup Thread
« on: January 08, 2008, 12:17:25 PM »
Thanks a lot guys!

I hate the Ciel matchup btw.  She seems to outprioritize you both on the ground and in the air, and EX Halo makes your EX Dunk and 22C practically useless.  I know her various mixups and how I'm supposed to block them, but it's still an uphill battle.

I probably need to bara consistently, that much I'm sure of - yes it's 150% meter, but he doesn't have a whole lot of other uses for it in this matchup.  Also supposedly she is vulnerable to bara throw at certain points, which would be awesome with my A command grab, but I can't figure out just when that is...

Any help would be appreciated! =)

Kouma OCV in some tournament video set Psy showed me:

Notice the usage of new BnB =o

Seriously, this is all kinds of awesome.

I simply must know one thing, though:  In that first video, at 0:55, how the heck does he jump and instantly turn around like that?  That would make his corner mixup from airthrow SCARY if you could consistently do it...

Thanks,
Josh.

Many, many thanks for this!  It's helped me a lot with all sorts of things...

However, I was wondering, can you just not download certain videos?  There are a couple longer series of matches for Real Bout 2 that I have been trying forever to grab, and it gives me a 403 error every single time!  Any help would be appreciated. =)

Kouma Kishima / MBAC: Kouma Matchup Thread
« on: December 11, 2007, 11:01:13 AM »
Well, with S-Blade taking care of the general stuff, I figured we needed a thread for the more specific problems people may have!

I played Kouma against someone else for the first time last night, and was finding V.Akiha kinda annoying.  With the way her air game works, I can't land 2B almost ever; I've actually had more success fishing for CH j.B, but that can be risky with her hair and all.  It's frustrating being forced to block and get stuck in her offense when she goes airborne...I'm guessing shield is the best answer here?  And when I do shield, I can't get anti-air 5A sometimes - can I get a 2A combo when she lands?

Thanks,
Josh.
