WTF. Check something like SBO GG tournament rankings and compare them to the US. In Japan, you'll have Baikens, Anjis, among the regular top tiers. US tournaments are Eddie, Eddie, Eddie, Eddie, Slayer, Eddie... The Japanese don't back down on characters because they're not top tiers, they find techniques around other powerful characters and exploit. That won't (usually) make their characters rise in a tier list, but being low or mid tier doesn't keep them from playing them, and you'll see them in tournaments. US mentality is pretty much the opposite.

Sorry Sylvan, competition exists just as much in Japan as it does in the US. They're more open-minded about trying to find new stuff, but I'm calling you out on being elitist if you think there's something wrong for picking top-tier to win.

Also, I've been playing 3s for eight years running and have been to Japan twice, so I know how Japanese top tier dynamics work. Daigo and Ohnuki keep winning with Ken and Chun-Li, and there's a reason for it.

Why wouldn't they tier whore? Cause some people enjoy playing the characters they are interested in for whatever reason. And they care enough about playing competitively to look for and use the specific techniques and strategies that can allow them wins over specific characters, regardless of the tiers. It's playing to win, using the characters that you enjoy playing with. This can't be alien to you people if you're all really so into fighting games.

The crux of the matter is that if people want to pick a top-tier character because they want to win above all other priorities (even if they don't like the character design), there's nothing wrong with it. Yet you seem to look down on players who do so. From what kind of authority do you pass your judgment on?

Top 5 in a tier list I think are, in no particular order, Eddie, Slayer, Testament, Potemkin, and Sol.  So 5 of the top 8 characters by popularity are top 5 in a tier list.  The only one sticking out is Faust.  This is in a team format where you can't have the same character twice on a team too.

It's not a coincidence that the people at the top have a majority of top tier users.  Just because a few don't use top tier or get carried in a team tournament doesn't make your arguments valid.

The Japanese tier whore. They're smart enough (and have both the resources + environs) to add more character variety to any game they play, but they 100% tier whore. It's not as aparrent in the US (thanks to the lack of resources + environs) but the Japanese tier whore. The most recent example I can throw out is Daigo switching his team from Ken, Guile, Sagat in CvS2 to A-Are. His old team is just fine but he went and tier whored anyway. I'm also pretty sure Kurodo plays Ken (instead of Q) now too.

Actually, Yukinose backed down on Buri because he was too low-tier, and moved on to a top-tier(Testament).

In Slash, Ogawa backed down on Eddie(for a while), and moved on to Ky because he was top-tier, however he later did move back to Eddie and continued to own just as much. But, the fact that he moved to Ky still stands.

This shit happens all the time with top players in japan, so yeah, the japanese tier whore as much as the US does, if not more.

I dunno, I Melty Blood's tier listing is too volatile to take seriously right now. If you want to believe in Tier lists, go right ahead, but you'll have just as hard of a time winning whoever you choose. Even Neco Arc can be good if you know how to play her right.

As for tiers in general, I think fighting games should step it up and make games that are so balanced that tier lists just vanish.

That's always the aim in fighting games.  But flawlessly balancing different characters with completely different variables and move sets is arguably approaching impossible.  Tier lists will always exist.
