Personally, I don't care for the same char rule.  However, in all fairness, I think it's better to not enforce the rule in this case considering how big this tournament is / intends to be.  Restricting teams due to a "same char" issue hardly seems worth the $50 entry (it is still $50, right?  Too lazy to check the first post!).  If teams want to gather the best of the best, let them.

That being said... GET HYPE FOR TEAM "WE TIER-WHORE, BITCH"!

I don't really care for the same character rule either way, but I would rather hear an offical statement one way or the other instead of hearsay from the organizer's girlfriend's brother's friend's dog's veterinarian.

The "teams must be formed one month prior to Evo" rule is fucking stupid, though. What's the purpose of that rule? To make the event seem 'more official' and to limit the number of teams entering?

Never mind that 98% of the people posting in this thread have no business entering this tournament.

The main reason for the no-duplicate-characters-rule is to give teams some more variety other than top-tier-exclusivity and to give players who don't use top-tier characters a chance to do some damage. Watching a Cielx3 vs Cielx3 match (highly unlikely with the size of our scene but still possible) would bore everyone to tears and you won't learn much about the game at all from it.

That being said, since we've been dropping restrictions like the regional rule already, I'll consider dropping the character exclusivity rule, as well as the entry fee- I didn't know how much rooms at the Tropicana cost until now and the prices are pretty ridiculous. Maybe I'll drop the entry fee to $30. I'm in the process of ordering entry goodies for people who sign up (Hasuko's roommate works for a company that makes branded stuff like cups and glasses), and I need to order the trophy as well.

I don't care and probably won't go to Evo but I agree with this.  But OTOH, if it so happens the teams get duplicates characters without really trying to (Kijea/Kryo) vs actively trying to recruit duplicates (Numakie/MChibi) I'm not really against it either.  Save the single character teams for a gimmick exhibition tourney or something.  The only "single" character team should be the Random Select team!   :toot:

Melty Cup was supposed to be about regional competition, then it got watered down to groups of friends teaming, and is now down to gimmicky teams!
<Xenozip> actually i think miyako was intuitive for linalys
<Xenozip> simple because his playstyle is.. well..

Putting character variety and feelings aside, I'm going by the the saying that it should of been said so in the first place, otherwise this "Character selection" issue could have been avoided altogether.  In fact, that rule probably should have been stated in the front page in the very beginning.  It is small details such as this that can cause huge problems if ignored or neglected.

Melty Cup was supposed to be about regional competition, then it got watered down to groups of friends teaming, and is now down to gimmicky teams!

All I am able to see is what I see on the first post which, in my opinion, lacked the detail needed on how big the event is supposed to be. I just see rules and thats it. In other words, it didn't give me a lasting impression. While it doesn't explain the other reasons where it came from regional to gimmicky, I can imagine this being one factor

Strangely enough, it is this little mishap on character selection that got me psyched about my gimmicky team. I am willing to go all the way with the HisuiX3 team if i am able to.

The main reason for the no-duplicate-characters-rule is to give teams some more variety other than top-tier-exclusivity and to give players who don't use top-tier characters a chance to do some damage.

It doesn't encourage diversity, it forces it...but it actually doesn't.  Those 6 Ciel users are still going to enter, just on different teams.  Potentially there are more Ciel vs Ciel games if they are spread out(I think, too lazy for math).  Unless there is some really broken character(which there isn't in most games) same character teams aren't ideal.  Theres no reason to take a mid tier player and hope they do damage if you can take a high tier player that probably will do damage.  Forcing two top tiers to take a mid isn't diversity, it's forcing everyone to watch a game that should be for 8th place but it's in the finals.  If the mid can actually win against a real team member(not just the other team's mid), then the game is balanced enough that the rule isn't helping anyway.

I guess I'll have to settle for Ciel/Sion/Len Ciel/Sion/Warc Ciel/Sion/Miyako Ciel/Sion/Akiha Ciel/Len/Warc Ciel/Len/Miyako Ciel/Len/Akiha Ciel/Warc/Miyako Ciel/Warc/Akiha or Ciel/Miyako/Akiha for team players who don't use top-tier characters still don't have a chance to do some damage.  It's no different than just banning a character you don't like.  Instead of a being the best, it's now b, or in this case instead of aaa it's abc.  The only problem with this is if aaa is actually the best, then either it's by such a small margin that it being the best is very questionable, or character a needs to be banned.

Adding an unnecessary restriction at this time is, as chibi so precisely describes the rule, "fucking stupid".  It's a fucking stupid restriction at a fucking stupid time.

Shrug I think you guys should take a chill pill and just work it out. I have my share of ideas I think are wack (winner take all in a tourney with expensive entry fee per team) But I think that it should all just get mentioned and fine tuned. The point is for it to be a big event for us especially with Actress Again around the corner.

I mean they did change the regional only rule when it proved unpopular so I don't see why any other unpopular changes couldn't get made. I'm pretty indifferent on the multiple character issue. If I have to fight 3x Ciel team though I'm going to break someone's heart before that match set is over.

If the rules are now set in stone and the teams are not allowed to do the same character thing, at least some kind of exhibition or side tourney should be considered.  :slowpoke:

With the removal of the "teams must be decided one month before Melty Cup" rule, nothing's set in stone for awhile.  there's still time to debate
